  1. Glad I've just stumbled on this thread, my OH is in Perth and is looking for rentals at the moment and we join him next week. He's submitted a couple of applications for rentals in Woodvale so glad that the schools and area is good, I'll have to mention to look in Edgewater too.

  2. Hi, we will be looking to rent a property in Perth soon too. I've done a rental pack and provided:

    • Passport
    • Visa details
    • Drivers licence
    • Marriage certificate
    • Birth certificates
    • Police checks
    • Bank statements from the UK
    • UK Mortgage statement
    • UK payslips
    • Pictures of our UK home
    • Reference from estate agents who we are using in the UK to rent our UK property
    • A sample of UK household bills
    • Reference from Billy's vet
    • Reference from Billy’s dog groomer

Hope this covers everything, it will be interesting to see what other people have included.

  3. It's such an emotional time, when we talked about it initially my mom was upset but I think she thought it would never happen. Now we have 3 weeks before we fly, out furniture went today and my mom was even upset at seeing our empty house. She is really struggling at the moment and it's really hard as I'm excited to be moving to Perth but on the other hand I feel guilty as hell and find it really difficult watching my mom struggling, especially as we'll be taking her two young grand children away from her. I know though if we don't do it we will always regret it, it's better to try than always wonder what if. Good luck to everyone who will be making the move soon.

  4. Hey My OH leaves on Sat and we (me and two children - 6 & 4) follow in Sept. I'm really nervous too, can't wait to start our new adventure but feel really guilty about leaving family and friends behind, especially when they're cry most times that I see them....I think it's normal to feel like this, it's the unknown of uprooting your family to the other side of the world. I know if we don't do it now we'll always regret it. Good luck with the move x

  5. Hey Scrumpy

We're in the same situation as you, just I the process of renting our property out. Can I ask when you got the valuation on the property was that from a normal estate agent? Also did you ask them to write this down on any official paperwork so if you do decide to sell you have proof or do you just have to know the figure for future reference?

    Thanks DSouzas

  6. hi clare, funny enough we traveled around loads of different suburbs when we got here , north and south and decided we really liked where we was, we are in somerly near mindarie which is lovely.got the kids into school after two weeks , no prolem at all. where will you be staying?

    Hi

We've got our short term rental in Mindarie as it seemed lovely round there. We contacted the school and hoped we could get them in there but my OH has got a job! whoo! they seemed to think that Mindarie would be too far out to live so we may have to look at living a little bit closer to the city. My OH is leaving for Oz in 6 weeks so he's gonna have to look at areas / houses for us. So glad your settled and loving it over there!

Keep in touch and we'll be joining you soon Clare

  7. Hi Jules, how funny is that! We fly from Heathrow with Malaysia, how about you? Accommodation is sorted, we booked with Let's-Perth, quite a while ago, there wasn't too much available back then, we've got the short term till 20 Oct so will have to find a long term rental by then. Good luck with your search, we're getting a bit nervous about the move now, it's not long! How about you? Clare

  8. Hi Carmel

Can't help you with the degree bit, OH does have a degree but it's not related to HR.

The visa process is quite straightforward to do. We found the skills assessment bit the hardest to gather the information for and we did have the help of a migration agent with that part but the rest we did ourselves. It's just lots of forms to fill out and various bits of information to find (although don't know much about Skill Select and how this differs from when we applied).

  9. Hey, you're situation sounds similar to ours last year, my OH applied for HR Manager but we too were unsuccessful for the same reasons, I've read quite a bit and spoke to a couple of HR people on here and I can't seem to find anyone who has passed the skills assessment for HR Manager. We submitted for HR Advisor and luckily passed. If HR Advisor isn't on the skills list for Victoria (which it wasn't last year) then you won't be able to apply for state sponsorship with them. HR Advisor was on WA's list and we managed to obtain state sponsorship with them.

Good luck with the IELTS my OH said it's more difficult than you expect, but he revised for a couple of weeks and passed.

I hope you get a positive skills assessment, good luck, keep us posted.

    Clare

  10. Hey

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of shipping children's trampolines? One of the shippers said that although one of his customers had cleaned the trampoline thoroughly, when it got to customs it had to be re-cleaned as the tubes that hold the netting are hollow and they wanted to make sure it was fully clean. I wanted to check if anyone else has managed to ship without having to get them cleaned? If not we may have to leave it in the UK.

Thanks for any help Clare x

  11. Thanks for all your replies! So now we have to decide whether to extend our long term rental or whether to try the indoor camping - thanks Rupert! That'll be interesting with two kids :) Guys who's furniture is on it's way good luck for a speedy turn around let me know how you get on! Our's will be going about 20 August and (hopefully) arriving as close to 20 October as possible :) x

  12. Hi, just after some advise, we've had 3 quotes with shippers now. 2 companies have said 8 - 10 weeks and one company said 10 - 12 weeks, just wondering what your experiences are? We're Just debating whether we'll need to extend our short term rental or whether the furniture will arrive in time for a long term rental?

    Thanks Clare x

  13. Hi Nohea

Great that you're all settled in Oz and that the move was quite smooth! Where about in Oz do you live - which state? Would it be possible for you to PM me the name of the shipping company you used? We have 2 companies coming tomorrow and will want to get maybe 1 more quote. I want to make sure we go with a good company so I want to make sure its not the one you used!

    Thanks Clare x

  14. Hey good luck with your move, it will fly by now! We're off in September so shortly after you. We've booked our car hire for the first few days with Mindarie car hire and they are also picking us up from the airport (we used them before for our validation trip and they're really good) and we've also booked out accommodation through them too (Let's-Perth). Hopefully that may help, good luck organising everything.

  15. Hey everyone

Just a quick update, we’ve booked our flights, we arrive in Perth on 17 Sept!!! So we’re on the count down now. We’ve booked a short term rental in Mindarie for 5 weeks and I’m hoping we’ll be able to secure a long term rental within that time – the short term rental wasn’t available any longer than this…and we’ve got to try to find a house that’ll let us bring our pooch (he’s a Shih Tzu so I’m hoping this won’t be too difficult).

It’s all very emotional at home at the moment with family, my mom is very upset that we’re taking her grandchildren away from her, so I’m feeling very guilty and sad to be leaving (she came with us to Perth and really loved it herself so she does understand why we want to move – it’s still hard though). On a plus she’s already booked her holiday from work to come and visit us in January!

We’ve got 2 removals companies coming on Thursday to give us quotes so I’m going through the whole house deciding what to keep / sell / charity shop etc. So it’s really busy at the moment!

Hope everyone else is keeping well and looking forward to the move / getting things organised.

Please keep your updates coming, it’s really nice to hear how everyone’s getting on.

    Clare x

  16. Hiya

It depends on your budget. The generic advice we were given (by estate agents and people we chatted to when we arrived) for decent places to live (North of the River) was as follows:

Don't go north of Kinross/Iluka. Clarkson is rough as hell (see posts on other threads) and you only chose to live there if you can't afford anywhere else. Choose an area west of the No. 2 Freeway and you will be fine.

The areas that we have liked are Hillarys, Sorrento, Karrinyup, Carine and Duncraig (excellent state schools there), we looked at houses in all of these areas, one of which we bought. We would have been happy living in any of them.

I don't know anything about south of the river but we discounted it for work reasons and also because the schools NOR seemed to have much better results.

The further south and the closer to the city you get, the more expensive it is. Renting is inordinately expensive. We've saved over $800 per month by taking out a mortgage versus renting a very basic 4 bed, 2 bath in Ocean Reef (which cost $540 per week and did not have a pool or air con anywhere except in the lounge).

We decided to buy very quickly when we got here. We were horrified at the state of the houses versus the weekly rent they were asking for. We didn't think smart (we just thought "get somewhere to live" but it would actually have worked out cheaper for us to rent a fully furnished 3 bed villa (read bungalow) in Balcatta at $750 per week, than it actually did by the time we broke the lease and paid all the associated costs. If you are thinking about buying in short order when you get here, you may want to consider the fully furnished route, as they allow you to rent for a minimum of 1 month and don't tie you to a 6 or 12 month period.

I would be aware that when you go to Home Opens to look at a place (rental agents won't do individual viewings), you will find that about 20 or 30 people will go along. However, of these, only 2 or 3 will actually put in an application, but the real estate agent will try and push you into it on the grounds that all these people will be submitting applications, but actually they aren't. When we broke our lease I offered to show people around, as I did not think that the agents would make much of an effort (being that if they didn't find someone we still had to pay the rent until the 6 months was up). I showed 10 families round. Eight of them said they were definitely going to submit applications and asked for the forms, but only 2 actually did. According to the agent, this is common, so don't be pushed into renting something you don't want because you think there is a real shortage. The other point is that every time there is a home open, the owners go out and half the neighbours have a look round (and give the agent false names).

    Hope this helps.

    Carolyn

    Hi Caroline,

Thanks for your very detailed post it’s given us lots of information and lots to think about!

Most of the areas on your list are on mine to look at – so that’s good although I’m surprised at some of the posts re Clarkson, we walked around Clarkson and it seemed a lovely area! Although it was in the middle of the day when we walked through.

To be honest I don’t know where to start and the location of where we live really has me worried. We have two children (3 & 6) and Josh will be in school so I want to make sure we get the areas where we live right as I don’t want to have to move him schools if I can help it – so I’m panicking a bit! So much to think about and organise argh…..oh and thanks for the tip on open homes; we’ll definitely keep this in mind.

Thanks again for the information Clare x
