  1. Thanks for the info,

We have friends we can stay with while job hunting in October, So we can use their address to start with.

Will follow Boomerang's suggestion, and settle most of these things during our recce trip.

For the TFN, are you actually taxable from the moment you take up the TFN, or would we only be taxed on income from October onwards ?

    Cheers,

Your TFN wont be used until you give it to a new employer and commence work. You cant commence work without it so its good to have it organised.

  2. We did all of our stuff like this during a holiday that we had about 6 months before we came. Organised Medicare cards, TFN , Bank accounts, Drivers licence change over as well, but then we had family here so we were able to use there address for that.

It just made it easie when we arrived as then we were concentrating on other things.

  3. Love Adelaide and no i dont want to bury myself as one comment suggests of the place. Having lived in both Brisbane and Melbourne I know that Adelaide is a much more "user friendly" place, lots of great eating places , restaurants, cafes, winerys etc

A great city which is not too big or overcrowded and some lovely towns dotted around if you prefer towns to suburbs. Very friendly as a general rule. Great beaches right along the coast which again are not busy except for probably Glenelg but thats not a beach that I would choose anyway when there a far better in the selection!

The things which you like about the G Coast you would have here ...The humidity dont get much of, the bling bling no none of - thank god - Customer service as a rule I think is very good, Culture im not sure on what level your looking but you will find if if you look for it and the city has the usual art galleries and museum, festivals etc are great here and well recieved. There are lots of nooks and crannies to Adelaide and SA in general if you look you will find its not all obvious but I like that other places sometimes seem like they are trying too hard!

  4. Hi there

I lived in Oz for 5 years but been back in UK for 2 and half years now. Just wondering if anyone knows any way of getting super back? I was a Perm Resident for 3 years but on 457 Visa for about 2 years before that. I think I know the answer already but just clutching at straws really! I wouldn't mind even losing half of the money because at this rate with fees etc my super wont be worth anything by the time I reach retirement age.

I've briefly looked at the route of Financial Hardship as we are overdrawn at the moment but I realise this isn't enough. Has anyone tried going down this route?

Could anyone offer any advise or recommend a company I could phone?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you so much!

I had paid super here in OZ for many years and when I returned to the UK 5 years ago I enquired to the super fund about what I should do. They said that I could have the funds released if I was leaving Australia permanently. I left it as was though because at the time I was unsure what I would eventually do, luckily I didnt relinquish my citizenship and claim my super as I am now back in OZ. You can however do it as long as you are sure you never want to return.

  5. Hi boomerang,

would you be able to give me the details of Southern Cross Removals please, I tried Google but couldn't find a Melbourne site/number? Did you move over much? We have a house full! not huge amount though!

We are looking at the eastern suburbs as would ideally like to only have one car and Husband used public transport to commute or cycle! That's if all goes to plan! Why did you leave Melbourne and choose Adelaide? Got so much to sort out in not long a time, as aiming to move the last week of September if we can, husband applying for jobs, so hopefully will all come together!

Sorry have been busy find a house so havent been on here for a while....it was actually Sovereign removals, apologies for that and the number is

    08 82654561

I had lived in Adelaide preiviously before going back to the UK and then returning to OZ once again after 4 years so it was natural to want to return to familitarity. I was however excited to be going somewhere new when we headed to Brisbane and then on to Melbourne but surprisingly to me anyway nothing really did it for either of us and we just couldnt settle anywhere else! The weather will be lovely by the time you get her spring is so beautiful at that time of the year....I hope your prepared for VERY hot weather here in the summer! Good luck with it all and if I can help in anyway please let me know, ill try and check this more often

  6. You could try beachside suburbs such as Brighton. Seaclife, Hove, Glengowrie is lovely convienient to Glenelg but not quite in the thick of it but nice schools around and has the beauty of the tramline direct to the city,

Further from the beach but still easy access but a lovely leafy suburb feel, with a proper little town is Kingswood, in the town of Mitcham. Clapham also close by - lovely charactar homes in tree lined streets and everything you need at hand - easy access to city with the train station and plenty of buses too. Mitcham is a really lovely area, we are hoping to find some rental accomodation there to suit us until we are in a position to buy. If you want close to the city then Norwood, Kent Town, Unley, Parkside are all lovely and close proximity to the city - you would probably need a larger buget to buy there though.

  7. Hi Wellse,

We just moved from Melbourne to Adelaide 3 weeks ago and used a company called Southern Cross Removals. It cost us just over 1,300.00 and an additional 45 per week for storage while we look for a house. They were nice guys very prompt, quick and friendly and have been helpful with matching/beating other competitors.

Where are you thinking of of settling? do you have any idea of the different areas etc ?

if you need any help feel free to ask.

  8. I lived in Adelaide for many years before moving back to the UK for four years. We moved back to OZ last October and went to Brisbane for work purposes but it wasnt for us so then took another opportunity to move to Melbourne which as was closer to Adelaide for visits to friends etc seemed like a double opportunity! WE were there for 8 months in total and have now finally moved to Adelaide for another opportunity and feel so good to be back.

It was a good experience living in other parts of the country and I enjoyed Melbourne but still did not feel quite at home there, We were in Seaford and enjoyed the Mornington Peninsula and discovered most parts of it but nothing really grabbed me or took my breath away quite like the sites of the southern beaches of Adelaide or the Adelaide hills and southern vales. If you feel a pull to a place and you have been here to experience at least an idea of what its like then it might be a sign that its right for you. Go for it! Its a lot closer that the UK and while you are in the country why not see if another place suits you better, you may never look back!

  9. Hello All.

Hope someone can help, this is my first post on the site after being a casual observer for a few years, I'm ashamed & embarrassed to say I am not in a good place right now. My husband & I entered Oz 6 months ago on a 175 visa (he was the main applicant - my skills weren't needed on the assessment). Anyway to cut to the chase my husband informed me a few weeks ago (3 weeks, 2 days and 7 hours ago to be precise) that he no longer wants to be married to me and wants a divorce. Much to my surprise he now tells me he was seeing another woman in the UK for years before we moved to Oz & the 6 months away from her has apparently convinced him his loyalties remain in a place other than with me (and our 4 children)

From what he says he tells me, as we are both Permanent Residents, divorce would have no effect on our visa status, and that he intends to remain in Melbourne because of work commitments and intends to re-marry his new 'woman' and live with her in Australia. My questions/concerns are these :

    1. We have 3 children, Does what's happening change our visa entitlements for us, or the kids.

    2. He's talking about divorce - I wouldn't even know where to start, would he file for divorce in the country we married in (UK) or in Australia.

    3. Can he really expect to get his new woman an Australian at the drop of the hat? Even if he marries her?

Sorry if these questions all seem a bit naive but my husband dealt with all of the visa paperwork when we applied, so this all a bit new to me. Guess I'm going to have to stand on my own 2 feet from here on in......:unsure:

Hi Kelly moo. Dont want to get too personal about my views on your husband, Just want to say that I feel for you and what you are going through and cant believe he would put you all through this process only to do this and now leave you in this position.

Im guessing that you are like most that arrive here and have left all your support networks behind so if you ever want to chat PM me, Im in Melbourne to and am more than happy to be a listening post and help you with any questions that you need to research. You will get through and you will learn to be self supporting it comes through anger first and then self determination to proove that they are not needed! Karma will prevail! Kath

  10. It is fairly obvious but the big supermarkets have killed off the towns that we used to know and they appear to have been replaced by souless, half empty ghost towns, i know the town i live is the same, we used to have a thriving community with grocer's, newsagent's, wine merchants etc but all have gone and now it is not a nice place to be.

Hi Andy, where in Bucks are you?

  11. Im hoping the next one to go is Owl Eyes, she drives me nuts with her look at me glasses and her persistant fake smile. Wouldnit surprise me if the glasses were just frames!

  12. Hi Kath,

  14. Hey guys where in Seaford are you? We are in Park St and have been here since Jan also both in our 40's . It would be great to catch up with others in the area with common interest so if you want to catch up with us and maybe others in the area too we should organise something? Kath

Sorry just realised you are in Carrum but not far anyway!!

  15. Hi Danny,

We nearly moved into Seaford, have a few guys at work that live there, nice part of the world.

I'm from Northumberland and Shell is from the other side of the city.

Shell has a daughter, she is 17, so if you ever need a reliable babysitter lol and 2 older sons.

    We are both early forties.

    Jimmy.

  16. I went back after 22 years here and similar to yourself had been here since I was 15. I didnt want to come here but had to because of my parents decision. I have to add that it was my third time living in OZ by that age as my parents could not make their minds up!

A divided family made it worse as with all the tooing and frowing most of them were in the UK and settled with familys so it was a hard transition and always felt that I had never totallu settled here and always hankered for my memories of the UK.

I went back in Jan 2008 and was there for almost 4 years it was lovely to be back and see everyone and to be able to spend some real time with them all and was lovely to experience the country as an adult with all the responsibilites that go with that, great to have a true experience. After the initilal 6 months though it was not all it was cracked up to be in my own head and the novelty had worn off, the most brilliant thing though is realising what I had in OZ and how luck I had been to live here.

I have been back now 8 months living in Melbourne at the moment and looking forward to eventually getting back to Adelaide. I am finally settled in my mind and happy to be here - having made these decisions by myself and not having them made for me is the difference I think, I finally feel free of the past and have let go of the memories cos thats all they are.
