  1. Rented in Melbourne for 9 years with two dogs, never had a knock back or issue and ive lived in East Melbourne, Camberwelll and North Fitzroy in some pretty nice places.
  2. I leave on Friday after 9 years in Melbourne and for those exact reasons if your on rightmove and this forum looking for advice then the deep down u want to go back. Get your citizenship and enjoy oz but for me i've done 9 amazing years and its time to explore UK and Europe and North America. Oz will always be here but family wont thats the bottom line. Take away the sun from the Gold Coast and u've not got much to stay for. I am going to buy a place in Europe with a pool and get a hot tub for the UK. Boats are great but they become boring quickly. I need culture and soul Oz is great but not enough to keep me. Cant wait to get back, the uncertainty about coming or going is stressful and can impact on the family relationship. Ask yourself this, if you had 10 years left to live life would you stay here or be back!!!!, a place is nothing without the people. best of luck and make sure you leave here with your ozzy passport, life is about options
  3. Thanks guys, really appreciate the advice.
  4. Hi Guys leaving Melbourne after 8 years, been driven back by the sad reality I may never own my own home and having a young family and on 1.5 incomes. I work for a Global Business that is HQ'd in UK they are paying for all my re-location cost. I am looking at Berkshire, working in Reading a couple of times and week and commuting to London the rest. Looks great but need some advice on best places in Berkshire to set up and has anyone commuted from there to london and can share their experience Gutted to leave but cant take the risk of not being able to provide a home for my young son in an area we want to live in. I am an Ozzie Citizen so if things change i can always come back. Looking froward to exploring the UK and having some time on the snow in Europe thanks guys
  5. Heading back from Oz to UK for family, ski hols in Europe, chance to explore more of UK and change of scenery. Oz is Great and So is UK fortunate enough to be a citizen of both. Pro's and Con's for everything life is what u make of it. to all the people with a question mark on moving back, do what your gut feel tells you, that way you can never be wrong. Too much time wasted wondering what if, what it, -------- do it and stick by your decision at least you took one rather than sitting on the fence.
  6. Im a director of a global recruitment business and things are tough and going to get tougher gone are the days of big $$$$'s big correction on the way i move back to uk at the end of the year
  7. Moving back for the following, Scottish lochs, the cold clean crisp air, pint of Tenants, camping holidays in the alps, family, proper friends and ability to afford a well built insulated house. Having said that I will miss, good coffee + attitude of the Ozzies, warm summer evenings. After 8 years I have enjoyed every day but time for the next chapter and now a citizen so all good - thanks Oz
  8. Sorry forgot to add i have a poor credit rating due to a voluntary re-possession on my UK home a few years ago when i lost my job and my tenants decided to do a runner
  9. Hi there might not be massivley relevant but i walked away from a house in the UK (voluntary surrender) and have a 50,000 debt in the Uk that i haven't paid for at about 4 years. Its never been chased to me in Oz and i have a great credit rating here and have had cars on finance and never had an issues. They wont chase oz debt to uk. Unfortunately i lost my job in the UK and had tenants that ripped me off and never paid the rent and cost me a small fortune . Best of luck not an easy situ

  13. Hi Guys moving back to uk in the next few months and was wondering if i could take my 50cc Yamaha Scoot with me, I bought it in Melbourne and intend to take it back to UK to the leave at my holiday house in italy to get around when i am over there. I have a few question if anyone could help that would be great: 1. Are you allowed to put a scoot in the container with all my furniture. 2. Do I have to pay import tax in uk or anything else, bearing in mind i am not going to use it in uk Basically i just want to get it back to the UK then take it out to my parents place in Barga. Any advice or help is massively appreciated. Cheers guys
  14. Pro's Positive Attitudes of the general Melbourne Public Great Bike Tracks and general heathy lifestyle Great Coffee and Food everywhere Decent Transport System Bike Friendly Vibe Grid System easy to get about Cons Old boy driven job network (old school tie crew) $1miilion + for a decent home close to the attractions Unprofessional corporate environment Quality of rental properties Long dark cold winter
  15. Perthbum you are wrong my last rental hard carbonmonoxide leaking from the gas fire - no law to enforce the gas check, fire was replaced but the land lord didn't car and we could have all died via Jellis Craig rental agent (so called high end rentals), it was only when i spoke to the CEO it was resolved!!!!! renting is a joke and so are the rentals in oz - glad i am leaving to go to the uk
  16. Made the decision today back to the uk resignation in and getting ready to leave at end of year. Im not one of these bitter aussie haters i love it here but its an economic decision and for the best plus hopefully some winter ski holidays in the uk
  17. Yep rat race sums it up !!! I am head of property for a FTSE 250 listed group living and working in Melbourne. I have been in property for 13 years plus both on client side and developer side. You need a brain transplant if you are buying in this market and thinking it would be a wise decision. Do me a favour work out if you could still afford your mortgage if interest rates went to 8 percent if you can't then don't - mortgages are for 20 -35 years if u think they won't go up then u need to wake up. 40 percent of new mortgages are interest only basically that means 40 of people have bought properties they can't afford. Been there done that pre GFC in the uk and lost 60k plus but everyone said u need to buy as it will always rise and there is lack of supply. Would have better putting all my money on the roulette table and praying for red. Watch this space things will change and if they don't I will happily retract my commentary and admit I am the stupid one
  18. I love Melbourne and Australia but listed below are the things I am struggling with even 8 years on after leaving Scotland, is anyone in the same boat as me or am I completely mental: Substandard cold rental property in North Fitzroy for $2781.00 a month and Land Lord thinking that is at an appropriate standard. Missing family (a lot) No support with my 2 year old who has been a bad sleeper no line of sight of being able to afford a decent house in a desirable area even though I earn in excess of $140K a year. The price of flights back home at Xmas $10K + Rego at $750 a year The long expensive battle for Citizenship and PR The lack of affordability to do long weekends away Sounds all very negative but I am really at the end of it and these issues are driving me back home. I love a lot of things about Melbs but I think its time to head home. Is anyone in the same boat or am I a negative Scotsman !!!!! or a realist
  19. Hi Team I did my Citizenship Test in March and passed just waiting on a ceremony to complete the process and apply for my PPort. Can i leave the country for a weeks holiday in Bali and come back in with no issue or has my PR been cancelled my little boy is in the same boat as me and my partner is still a PR as she hasn't been here long enough to apply for her citizenship so she will be ok. I called immigration today and they said it should be ok to leave but i don't have a lot of confidence in the lady i dealt with as he English wasn't great and i just wanted to double check prior to booking and not being able to get back in. Thanks in advance
  20. Yep tough times ahead I think !!!! Still at least the coffee is great and the sun is shining
  21. Shelley bingo bingo - any tips for the bingo!!!! Need a bingo win to buy a house and maybe Sherlock homes to find me the best one
  22. Having left the UK in 2008 having worked for a leading property developer I cant help but think that there is a big correction on its way. The price of housing in the major cities is a concern, housing is a basic requirement not a money making mechanism!!! $1million gets banded about like is a fair price - by the way its not!!!! believe me its sky high and the quality of build isn't great. Debating on a return to the UK as it seems like earning $150,000K a year doesn't allow you to save up for a house and with the childcare and general living costs. Is anyone else thinking the same as me, don't get me wrong Oz is amazing but the prices are getting out of control and is need addressing. There is a reason they call it a "housing buble" and we all know what happens with bubbles!!!!! Look forward to hearing what other peeps think Cheers
  23. Oh any by the way my Citizenship and re-location doesn't come easy, i have bust my ass to get me PR and having being made redundant twice in the process. The only reason my work will re-locate me free is that last year i made them $1.1 million dollars and they paid me just over 15% of that so thats why they will pay for it.
  24. Thanks for the comments guys, its helpful. Think I am gonna just take things day by day and not worry to much about the future and deal with the present and make the best of Melbourne cos its a hell of a lot better than Glasgow!!!!!!!
