  1. I know this sounds a bit desperate but....

Will be missing my tv shows!! Watch loads on Sky atlantic, SKY one, BBC one, Premier league etc. I know foxtel gets some of these, but want to know what i can get!!

I know theres more to do in oz and will be making the most of it..believe me, but will miss me shows!!!

  2. Thanks everyone. We know its going to be tough and wont take any risks. We dont have much now and arent moving to Oz for this amazing luxurious lifestyle, far from it. We expect to have no money and struggle, just an idea we were toying with to help fund the move and pay for the dog to be transported (ludicrous amount!!) Were being sensible and renting the house out, may as well keep it for now. Think were going to give ourselves 18 months to save as much as we can. Thanks for all the advice

  3. you need to get a loan to go to oz ??? & you think this going to give you the ideal life in oz you are so so wrong. Please take some proper advice before you go down this route.

    Hi,

Not for one minute did i think it was going to be easy. This wasnt to set us up and give us a "dream" lifestyle. Were under no illusions that it will be tough, this was just to help with moving costs

  4. Hiya,

Im thinking of taking out secured loan to fund our move over and im worried about what happens to the secured loan in 2 years. Can i continue paying this from Australia, will the bank call this in?. Im concerned we wont be able to get a decent rate again in 2years or we wont be able to get anything at all, leaving us with a large debt to pay back asap...:arghh:

    Any help would be appreciated!!!

  5. I think there is only one branch of Commonwealth in th UK (in London). Might be wrong, but having a quick look at their website that is all I could find. There is also a Westpac branch in London. We used Westpac, no problems with them for personal or business accounts. I am not sure you would be able to apply for loans/credit cards from outside Australia. We opened our Westpac account from the uk and transferred money in prior to our arrival. Once we were here we went to prove our identity at the branch and collect our EFTPOS cards, and they offered us credit cards on the spot. We had absolutely no trouble getting a mortgage without any credit history (we don't use the credit cards, they are there just in case we should need them). Our mortgage is with ANZ because at the time we were on a 457 and they were/are one of the only banks who will allow 457 holders to apply.

    Hey there,

Thanks for the help. Were really worried about bank accounts renting our house out..arrgghh!!!

  6. Hiya,

My fella and i have been granted our visas at long last, but had a bit of a mad panic! We have been told we have arrive in Australia by November 2013, thats all well and good but we thought the visa had to be activated within 2 years, which is what we planned to do, save up, sell up etc and then go in 12-18 months. Im not sure now where we got that thought from??!!!

What we were thinking was to fly over, comply with the conditons of the visa, stop for 10 days and then fly back next year for the permanent move. Then we could continue to save and build a nest egg to support us. The visa is valid unitl Jan 2017, so surely this means we can do this??

Has anyone else done this, is this a stupid idea?

    Stephanie

  7. Hiya,

My fella, me and our choccie lab charlie are arriving in Perth, in November this year and wondered if anyone had any available, or the best sites to check out. Struggling to find many that will take pets!. Charlie is a very friendly, loveable labrador!

Any of the areas mentioned would be great, has to be around here due to conditions of the Visa. Long term/short term, anything would help!

  8. Did you do much research before applying re costs of it all? If so how long ago was that as some prices may have gone up since then.

If you don't have much money your first consideration should be the dog. Depending on size it could cost you between £2500-4000 to ship and dog to Aus and then about another $1000 on top for quarantine (if its 30 days). Also you need to get the rabies blood work and paperwork in order at least 5 months before departure of dog to do the minimum quarantine time in Aus. If you really cannot afford to take your dog go the safe route with rehoming via a proper rescue with a no PTS policy to ensure it finds a decent home. Please don't advertise it on Gumtree or the paper as some very dodgy people get dogs that way and they can end up as bait dogs or breeding machines.

If you don't have much in the way of savings or money I am not sure how best to go about setting up in Aus. If its just you and a partner then its easier than with kids I'd guess but still not without risk.

Airfares will cost. No getting round that. £700 upwards for one way from UK to Aus generally.

Job wise, its usually better to be on the ground in Aus than applying for them from the UK but some in demand skills may be able to secure employment from the UK but its not something that happens all the time or anything.

If you have to fly out to validate you'll need funds for that also. You could fly out one way of course and validate and stay.

    Hi Snifter,

Thanks for the reply. Yeah did some research but think its the speed of which we have to suddenly find the money and get over there!. Dog wont be staying, thats one thing the wife wont part with!!!

Looks like its soup for tea for the next 10 months!!

  9. I cant believe it, visas have come through quicker than expected!!...happy and scared right now!!

Can any one offer advice on what to do now?!!. What do we need to do with jobs, home...dog?!!! We dont have much money either, has anyone done it with little or nothing?

  10. Sounds like you could be worrying a wee bit much. as others have said its pretty basic wee check over look in mouth eyes bp, listen to chest. chest x ray, blood test, height weight and reading eye chart. DONE and costs a small fortune :biglaugh:

    Good Luck!

    Hi Neenie,

Phew, thats a reflief. Worried us a little, when they said it would take about an hour and a half!! Cant believe how much it costs!!!

    Thanks

    Steph

  11. Who told you that? :biglaugh::biglaugh: imagine that you have to have a certain IQ level to be allowed to live in Australia! Testing includes your weight, blood pressure check, vision check, urine test, physical exam ( just a very routine one, takes one minute), X ray, blood tests ( not sure about the last 2 in your situation because I am a medical professional and had to do it, as well as I know teachers and daycare workers have to do it).

Hiya, applying for the 489..i think (numbers keep changing!!) on the tick sheet sent by my agent, which we take, it mentions an intelligence test. Well, will my other half might struggle, not the sharpest tool!!!!!

We are worrying too much then?!

  12. Hey there!

Thanks for the info. Put stuff about job and housing sites, but they want more!!. Guess i have to be more specific?!!!

We didn't have any further queries to the forms we submitted for WA SS so not but maybe they want you to show you have researched the areas in depth. Mention specifics such a job vacancies (website/job vacancy number), housing costs in each area etc. We mentioned specific towns and friends who live in each place who would be our support structure and who are urging us to make the move as they migrated there and love it having settled quickly and found work etc.... I added links to websites for housing / jobs and articles in the press indicating the skills shortage which related to OH's trade.

Good luck! Not sure if this helps...
