  1. its slowing down.. it took me 6 months trying to get another project role before i fond one.. and that because i know the people on the new project..

Now i was still employed whilst looking, which took the stress off, but basically got nothing from all the jobs i applied for on seek etc.

  2. i second the bit about safety. "give an example of where you brought about a positive effect on safety".. Its almost to the point where .. if you dont say.. "i'm safety focused" then they assume that you are not and that further more you some sort of madman..!

or that could be just me?

    good luck...

personally, i hate interviews.. taking them or implementing them

  3. not going to get involved in any moral debate..

there are legal rules.. thats what actually counts.. someone else's view on what you should do.. well.. opinions are like a**holes.. everyone has got one

arm yourself with the facts.. take it from there

  4. You've got to be careful, a lot of building sites won't accept online cards as anyone could it for you. Pay that little bit more and go to a classroom based one, then you'll not have any problems in future.

Never had a problem on any of the sites i have been to and it was just a tick box during the induction..."do you have one".."yes... here is a copy of the cert"

but you may have had a different experience

  6. Its an industrial town. Lots of people working on the Gas builds on the island.. or on the coal terminal expansion at Wiggins.

I live in Tanuum Sands and its a good little burb only 30mins travel in the morning

Only real issue is that the town has not been able to keep up with the pop surge during all this work.. so there just isnt enough shops and service providers ( doctors are always full)

so its not unusual for us to hop up to Rocky to do some shopping.. or visit a specialist doc in yeppon

But..if you can get into the construction boom here.. the money is eye wateringly good.. and it seems like it has a few more yrs to run ( they are talking about a channel duplication - and another Gas company , Arrow Energy, is close to saying yes or no to going ahead with their Plant

  7. Here's another two

yup... thats basically the sort of money that people on these projects are pulling in.. i know of an environmental advisor on one of the pipeline projects .. bringing the gas to Gladstone.. who is new to the industry.. got that huge break.. of being let on site.. and that the hard part.. they are are on $80/hr.. they do a 12 hr day on site.. yup.. its not for the faint of heart.. they do 3/1.. so they get paid $20,000 every 4 weeks.. working on the usual 4 week hols.. thats $220K a year.. a bit less if you want to factor in sick time

Before i got into this game.. i used to look at those $150K mining jobs and wonder.. wow.. how do i get into that... now.. i have seen what some sectors get.. and its almost... psssft... $150K

i'm sure its all going to end at some point.. but intend to ride the boom all the way to the bust for as long as i can...

  8. If you don't want to pay tax then you need to move somewhere where they don't have income tax, like places in the Middle East or some Caribbean countries. In either UK or Australia, this level of deduction (about 30% per your stated numbers) is perfectly normal at this income level.

I think it is a very good thing that both countries have closed the previous loopholes. In the lates 90's early noughties I worked in the city and knew countless IT contractors, that worked for a single company the whole time, earning six figures but only paying themselves a "salary" of £10k and the associated income tax on that (which is not much). It was not right and not fair and those days have gone so get over it.

its not about "not paying tax".. personally it about paying as much/littlr as i have too.

Society, via the tax office will tell me whats legal.. morality.. i'll leave that to religion..

  9. but... last year i was working on a site and needed some trained people to fill in the day to day boring, yet essential, tasks.

Put out an advert and in the list there were a couple of recent grads who had just arrived in Perth on a working holiday visa

I interviewed them.. thought that they would fit the bill.. money was better than the dish washing jobs they had lined up

Both of them have now been at the company for a year and both are being sponsored on a 457.

So give them another year ( and the project still has a year or two to run).. and they can go for PR.

So as a recent grad.. the WHV isnt a bad option

and there was another lad working for us who has now got his PR via that process... luck.. maybe.. but you have to buy a ticket to win

  10. well the LNG plants still need to be finished off. So i am here for another year or so.. after that.. who knows.. they have just found a load in Mozambique (LNG)... or maybe the DOHA port expansion... or just take a year off and relax and wait for an opportunity..!

  11. you need another tax advisor..

I have my own company contracting in O&G. I would be on the top tax rate based on my day rate etc.

But my accountant finds ways, legal of course, to make sure that i pay no more than the 32% rate.. and that not on all earnings.. thats just my marginal rate.

get another quote.. shop around a bit.. there are some good advantages to being a contractor, which your accountant can and should exploit

  12. HI Verystormy,

you back doing gold again? You gave me some good advice last year which paid off for me. I'm in O&G at the moment but i am getting alot of calls to work in coal (i'm an enviro with a hydrogeologist bent..) but i've heard that fundamentally coal is boring.. so i am thinking of staying near the coast and doing port expansions.. figure that the coal/resources need to exit the country from somewhere..!

As a general aside, from guys i talk too who have done FIFO, all they say is.. dont stay on the long rosters for long if you want to stay married. "how long" being determined by the strength of the marriage.. but 4/1 and 3/1 are killers.

In that regard.. i am happy with my 5 days on 2 off and home every night.

  13. I dont work at Gorgon.. but i am in the same operation here in Gladstone. As a forman i would expect you should be on 100/hr.. if any of the jobs over here are something to go on.

Now of course you have to work/ find out.. how many hours.. its usually 12/day.. but might only be 10. and then there is the rostor.. construction is typically 3/1 ( week on/off) with usually one day off a week in that 3 weeks.

Mate of mine did 8 weeks on 4 off for Gorgon.. on a ship.. was pulling in approx $250K/yr but it wasnt something she wanted to do long term.. and moved to QLD

She was a water quality specialist, no idea for who or what ship.. but i will ask her when i see her next
