Hello
Sorry for the delay, it's my first day in the office back the since Christmas break.
You are right in saying that you will not be able to conduct a pension transfer with your NHS pension to an Australian Super Fund (this is a UK rule).
Hi, Andrew - is this because the NHS is a public sector fund? I have a deferred benefit with the Local Government scheme (LGPS), and while I was not thinking of transferring it, it would be good to know if it is possible.
Thanks

I think some people still have a resistance, deep down, to being Australian.
I have had citizenship for a few years but am certainly not Australian...

there is a guy on the New Jersey franchise who moved to USA with his parents aged 1, never took out USA citizenship, committed mortgage fraud 40 years later and got 4 years, he’s just completed his sentence and has now been removed to a deportation centre and is being deported back to Italy. His wife, 4 children, parents, siblings, extended family etc are all staying in the USA, he cannot speak Italian and has no family there. It is sad, and all of this for mortgage fraud...
Though getting Australian citizenship would not stop you from being deported after serving a criminal sentence - they would just strip you of it if they wish.

Yes I read something similar. I have asked them to send me a revised payment cost noting that they have already confirmed Class 2 for me...
Thanks again.

Hi
Yes these are class 3 rates, definitely apply for class 2, much much cheaper at around 140GBP per year currently.
The current full basic state pension is 30 years and pays around 115GBP pw, so 25 years would give around 95.45GBP pw(83%).
Regards the Oz State Pension, this is means tested under the income and assets test so whichever gives the lower result is what is paid. There are thresholds for both, you have pointed out the assets test and the income test lower threshold is $284 pf and upper is $2,878 pf for couples.
Also the Pensions may kick in at different times, in my experience paying class 2 seems to be very worthwhile for most people.
Hi, Andrew
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I was sent a letter in 2015 giving details of repaying past NI years at Class 2 (as you said around 140GBP per year). Now when I log onto HMRC under my page the higher class 3 is being quoted for my missing years (around 700GBP per year, which many not be worth it) - has class 2 for people living abroad been abolished? My 2015 letter said I had until April 2019 to pay so hopefully that would still be valid?
Many thanks

Thank you so much. Even as I was looking online at jobs and houses back in Scotland I had this feeling in the pit of my stomach that it was just hormones and my current feelings making me go a bit mad! The minute my husband got the email to tell him about the police residency rules it was like something snapped me back to reality. I think I just need to accept that whilst I will never have those deep connections with people like I do at home, I am fortunate to have a lot of good friends here and I just have to start speaking up that I am a bit lonely as a new mum and need more contact with people. I’ve also decided that I will return to work one day a week come July as I think that the interaction there will be really good for me.Yes, you sound like my wife and I, we've been in Victoria for 9 years, and have realised that we will never have a deep connection to this place, or make many friends here (she has one or two, I have none) we just have to concentrate on what is good about our lives here and enjoy it. We were musing about returning a few months ago but that has passed - it will probably come back but as we have a nice house, well-paid jobs and basically enjoy our existence it would seem foolish to risk it at our time of life (around 50) - finding work at my age would not be easy.

Apart from changing his name which is perfectly legal the article doesn't really make clear what the fraud was.

Absolutely agree.
Both the husband and wife should be gung-ho about the move otherwise it's not worth it.
Yes, I would say unless there is something 'wrong' with your UK life, I would not come to Aus now. I might even say, don't come unless you have a firm job to go to.

All employers are required to pay into your superannuation.
They are, but close to a third of employers underpay it or don't pay at all - another national scandal.

This link suggests that crime levels have clearly fallen in Mirrabooka over the last 7 years:
Sounds like any influx of migrants has had a beneficial effect on crime there - showing the local criminals that it is possible to live in harmony... but I am sure many residents who sadly are the victims of crime are happy to blame immigrants without any evidence: you've no idea who broke into the house you mention, or their ethnicity.

Share of gross domestic product enjoyed by Australian wage earners has recently tumbled dramatically.
For the third consecutive quarter employees’ share has been below 46.9%. This is the lowest since the ABS began recording this data in 1959.

During the Rudd years, Australia’s annual economic growth was in the top three in the OECD. In 2012 and 2013, it was still in the top seven.
After four years of the Coalition, growth now ranks 25th out of those 35 countries.

Before you were an Aus citizen shouldn't the rental income have been untaxed in Aus?

My wife and I have a large circle of friends in the U.K.- but after 8 years in Victoria it hasn't happened here. Neither of us have real friends here, she has one or two acquaintances. It may be our age (late 40s) - by this stage in life most Aussies have made their friendships and have a family circle, so are just not interested in pursuing more.

I grew up in Geelong, my feeling is it's a fairly depressing place to be quite honest. It's stinking hot in the summer and miserable in the winter.
I have lived in Geelong for the last 5 years and it is certainly not depressing now, best move we ever made (from Melbourne). Seems to be plenty of construction going on as well.

Has it gone up in value since it stopped being your principal residence? If not then no CGT liability anyway.

I have a reasonably sized (maybe 6 figures in Aus$) share portfolio invested with a UK company, this was inherited from my father in 2008 (inheritance tax was paid). I have not received any income from this, but when in the future I realise this asset and bring the proceeds to Australia will that money be taxable?

trendsetters hoping to get their hands on the newest smartphone on the market are often forced to splash out more than $1000 and sign their name in blood on a binding contract.
I just pay $30 per month in ink - less than the price of one meal out per month - and get the latest handset...

I used to have a huawei good phone left it on the train never seen again lol.
Huawei are the Chinese company who are not permitted to enter the US or UK telecom market owing to fears over Chinese state interference in internet and phone traffic. Needless to say the Australian government welcomed them with open arms not only into the phone network, but also online - they sell routers here as well...

It's on BBC web page also in a number of on line papers , BBC saying she should not have been paid since she was on front bench ?
I can't see it on the BBC News site - can you post a link. It would seem bizarre for the BBC to complain if they were the ones paying it...

New 55+ Retail QROPS Super (soon) - UK Pension Transfers
in Money & Finance
Posted
Yes, it is a defined benefit, deferred since 2009. Though the LGPS is funded unlike some of them?
I would of course be giving up the DB lump sum and lifetime pension - but I am concerned that both will be taxed when paid from the UK while if transferred as a cash equivalent into super here they wouldn't be when I take the benefit. I could actually take the LGPS benefit (reduced) in 2 years at age 55.
Thanks
