  1. Jesus, Perth?? And you think Smellbum is functional, efficient but lacking any personality

Perth is a cool city, ticks a lot of boxes for me right now. That might change in the future but for now it's where we want to be. Just shows it's all subjective, I'm sure there's probably someone in sitting in Mogadishu right now thinking "wow, what a place".

  2. Where you going to afro?

    I'm off to No 9.

I've been to Cape Town a number of times including a spell of living there. When you say Saffies move to Australia that is true though in numbers much less than Kiwis.(similar populations if taking race into account) A number of folk move to CapeTown from other regions of RSA because safety issues amoung other things.

I know folk from CT that tried WA and didn't find it to their liking at all. Far too restrictive. That part of the world has some of the most natural beauty found anywhere in the world, although I've yet to check out Rio as that may well compare.

Some of the suburbs of CapeTown would make Pepperment Grove(WA) look almost ordinary. Most of the crime is in the townships although one does need to be aware of surrondings in some areas more than others.

Jo'Burg of course is another proposition as is sadly to sad Durban where it is rather easy to come to grieve.

Cape Town is the best city I've ever been to. It's probably my girlfriends best feature (being from Cape Town ). I think I've made the mistake of using it as a benchmark for where I'd like to live though. Not many cities can live up to how outstandingly stunning it is. Visiting Cape Town on my way to Melbourne probably helped me realise how much of a bland and ordinary city Melbourne is. Melbourne should really be a German city, functional, efficient but lacking any personality.

  3. Hi Guys, I'm doing my Vetassess assessment on the 24th of Sept 2011 in North London, Dose anybody know of any cheap accomadation around the area of the collage (Collage Of North West London)? B&B, Hostels would be fine? Thanks guys.. Jonathan

Not sure what accommodation is in the area but I do know the College quite well. All I can say is the area it's in is a bit of a dump. You might want to try looking at Wembley (again a bit of a dump but may have more choice of Hotels because of the stadium) and is two stops away on the tube (Wembley Park - Dollis Hill).

My personal choice would be Golders Green. It's quite a nice area and only 30 - 45mins from the College. It's probably the best place also if you want to grab a pint or a bit to eat in the evening. It'll depend on how fussy you are of course (you might be content with just getting your head down) and availability within your budget.

Check out these sites for some info; the first is BnB's in the area, and the second is the Transport For London web-site so you can plot on getting around.

  4. Hi there,

you can do a 2 week ETL course in Perth which ,on completion you can apply for a WA licence and if you have a PR visa seemingly you can pay only $160 for the course as opposed to the full fee of about $960.

For more details read the thread at www.britishexpats.com on what the course entails and another thread at www.britishexpats.com

    on how to apply.

    Hope this helps

    Regards Derren

Do you know if there's anyplace that does the equivalent in Vic? I'm in two minds wether to go through the hassle of TRA (it's the nightmare of collating evidence when you've spent the last ten years working through agencies). Failing that, I'll probably be cheaper in the long run just heading to Perth for two weeks and transferring the licence if it's possible.

Just to add; I'm trying to remember if you can do the Perth course with just Vetasses OSTR (I think it's called)

  5. Hello,

After much deliberation, I feel like most people here TRA (and maybe PEER) is the way forward. I've got my Visa already so no worries there, but like most had to go down the dead end Vetassess path. Trouble is, besides feeling like I'm starting all over again from three years ago when I did my Vetassess. My references required for TRA are going to be hard to come by. I've worked via agencies for the last ten years. With most projects being filled exclusively with agencie staff (engineers, managers, supervisors etc). So as the project disbands, these people move on are no longer with the same companies. I don't believe either that working through an agency is classified as being self employed by TRA. Also the recruitment agencies can give a letter stating I was on such a such contract at whatever period, but they are however unable to give a technical reference of duties etc.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation to myself? Or does anyone know exactly what information they've supplied themselves in order to gain their ARTC.

    Thanks.
