QUOTE=Debbie Stuart;1936945352]Myself and partner are hoping to move out on a work sponsored 457 visa later this year. He is expecting to be offered a salary of around 80k per year but not sure what deductions or allowances we will need to take into consideration for his take home pay. I know he will pay tax and super is on top of his salary but what about Medicare etc. He is coming up to 50 so is it age related. Also I am 56 and wonder if anyone has experienced any problems getting a job at my age. I have worked as a office/finance manager in a kitchen manufacture / retail company for 23 years and would like to stay in an office admin type role. Any ideas of salary expectations for me? Any help,or advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you

  3. It is all good and well saying this is the way to go... do these families have to cough up this money before school starts as most of us have been through the beginning of year costs for your child to be at school... not counting the books etc.... and we can't forget this is worked out on your actual salary before tax ... not worked out after tax.... eg.... $57000 equates to $880 a week take home... hmmm not looking so great now... take home for the year $45,933 and before argument breaks out.... that is with the tax threshold ... so just to open it up a little.... average rent.... $300-$450 per week... food.. bills...transport... clothes... children stuff... not a lot left... and to cap it all off pay private health insurance but hey wooohooo to 457 paying more than some private schools charge...no l am not a 457 anymore but that's how it started for our family.... all l can say is thank god we did it 8 years ago before all this crap started...

State Government poised to charge parents on 457 visas up to $6100 per child for public education

    Education Minister Susan Close.

CHARGING parents working in South Australia on 457 visas to send their children to public schools is expected to net the State Government an extra $11 million to spend on early childhood education.

Education Minister Susan Close has announced that 457 visa workers earning a household income of more than $57,000 will have to start paying school fees of up to $6100 from next year. The move brings SA into line with WA, NSW and the ACT.

Currently, people employed in SA on 457 visas — granted to foreign workers employed in Australia to fill a skills shortage — do not pay public school fees.

Dr Close said the Government felt it was “fair to ask 457 visa holders who make a temporary home here to make a modest contribution to the cost of providing public education”.

“The money will help fund early childhood education, which is one of the most crucial areas of our education system,” she said.

Immigration Department data shows that about 1500 applications for 457 visas are granted each year for SA. Visa holders can remain for up to four years.

    index&domain=adelaidenow.com.au&td_widget=otherstories&widget=otherstories

It is estimated the new fee requirement will generate more than $11 million in extra revenue for the state over the next four years.

Any family supported by a 457 visa worker, with a household income of $77,000 or more, will have to pay $5100 per year for primary school students and $6100 for secondary students.

In comparison, the average South Australian family pays a basic fee for primary school students of $229 and $303 per secondary student, but schools can set fees higher by a vote of parents.

Fees will only be charged on 457 visa families with a gross income of more than $57,000.

Sliding discounts will be applied to families earning up to $77,000, after which parents will pay the full fee.

Federal immigration data show Indian workers made up almost 20 per cent of people granted the visas in 2014-15, followed by those from the United Kingdom (15.3 per cent each), China (12.9 per cent), the United States (7.8 per cent) and the Philippines (6.1 per cent each).

The most common occupations filled by these workers at present include meat worker, medical officer or GP, cook, university lecturer, metal fabricator, graphic designer, accountant and massage therapist.

The average 457 visa worker earns a base salary of $90,700, compared to $70,100 for the average fulltime working South Australian.

For the first year, the new charge will only apply to people who arrive in SA from January 1, 2017.

From January 2018 it will apply to all 457 visa holders living the state, regardless of when they arrived.

  4. Hi there Mel

You will find that he will have already done quite a bit of the work already laid out for year 6 in the uk and plus... It is a shame that you didn't put this up sooner as l would have said you could try him out for the Gifted and Talented that they have for high school l think you missed the dead line but have a look at http://www.det.wa.edu.au/curriculumsupport/giftedandtalented/detcms/portal/ We have a son that was in the same boat but made it in the gifted and talented classes in Duncraig... really glad we did he now completed yr12 last year and just started uni. Good luck. Ps Duncraig has gifted and talented and a school based academic extension class which are the same but one is government and the other run by the school but on the same par.

Morning all, hoping someone could give me a little bit of advice? We moved to Perth end of January this year and have a son who is in year 6. In the UK he was working above grades (takes after his dad there I think lol) and since starting school he has been finding it extremely easy to the point he is getting bored. His teacher is having to sit down with another teacher to put a plan together for him. Does anyone know where we can either get access to some work which we can do with him outside of school or know of a home tutor who may be helpful to us? Would just like to add we are definitely not pushy parents! We just want to see him challenged how he was in the uk to help him reach his full potential. We won't be making him sit down each night after school to keep working!

    Any help will be appreciated!

  5. Well guess l kinda let that one work out as l only work 4 days a week so l get long weekends... never see a Monday rush hour....... yep life is for living... learnt long ago that 2 jobs didn't have to mean working 7 days.....

I wouldn't feel guilty and I wouldn't feel lucky niether after all life is for living according to ya profile pic lol :)
  6. Have posted this on perth poms so just sharing it here as well....

To anyone that might be considering using TRA to further their application and get their qualifications recognised there are some major changes since October.... apologies if this is already around......

"Australian Recognised Trade Certificate (ARTC) programme has closed. No new ARTC applications will be accepted. Any ARTC applications received that are post-marked 1 October 2014 or later will be returned to the applicant unprocessed, and the application fee will be refunded."

  7. good news is that they say 3 months so anything before that seems like a bonus.... you never know.. ya could get lucky

As the subject goes, is anyone currently getting citizenship? just rang them up today as I just had my appointment and Australia test and passed a week ago and there saying it could be at least 3 months before I get a letter approving next step.

Is anyone experiencing that kind of time frame at the moment, as I'm trying to determine when to apply for wife's ancestry visa back to uk and is kinda dependent on it happening before next march as that when the elder daughter turns 18.

To say I'm getting concerned is an understatement.

  8. ok so things not so great .... have you got any written evidence that you have taken mediation ... if not get a copy of anything written down... then tell your company to shove their job where the sun don't shine... they cant touch you if you can prove there is a break down of the working relationship with your job... the only thing they can hit you with out of pocket costs if it is written in your contract that you will work the minimum 2 years ... it has to be written in... if no such thing in your contract you can walk tomorrow and they cant do a thing, and they don't have the power to revoke your visa either unless you broke the law... leaving a job does not break the law especially if you ever had to discuss the situation which l doubt. Also the idiot causing the trouble probably be glad to see you go... win win.....

Yes, we have met several times with a mediator. Afterwards it is ok for a few days, but then it just goes back to how it was before.
  9. I think reading through this on their website it would appear that they are not that open in you just showing a certificate..... there are so many dual nationalities here that would all do it to save the costs and time. Sorry for not being good news....

"Once you have become an Australian citizen any visa you held ceases.

As an Australian citizen you must always leave and enter Australia on an Australian passport. If you also have a passport from another country you can use that for travel once you have left Australia.

People trying to enter Australia as an Australian citizen but without an Australian passport face difficulties and delays. The Australian Passport Office provides more information.

If you also have a passport from another country you should always use your Australian passport when leaving and entering Australia. Be very aware that you can pay for your flights etc but at the airport you can be stopped from boarding for not following the right procedure... to how much you have to pay for tickets it would be a shame to be turned away just for a passport. l really feel that you wont be able to do it the way you are thinking of trying, other option is to go to airport and ask someone on one of the counters that deals directly with this everyday.

Has anyone had experience of travelling to and from the Uk from Australia on British passports once they are Australian citizens?

Our visas are in our passports and expire in 2016. However we received citizenship last year so in theory those visas are cancelled. I believe that so long as you carry your citizenship papers you can travel on UK passports but I can't get a straight answer out of the Australian passport enquiry line.

    Many thanks

  10. Don't know if this covers what you are looking for but if l get this correct .... before Curtin allows him to do a major in mechanical engineering he will need to do what they call Engineering foundation .... The Bachelor of Engineering begins with an engineering pre-major, called the Engineering Foundation Year (EFY). The EFY builds a solid base of the fundamental concepts common to all areas of engineering, which allows you to explore your options before selecting an engineering major towards the end of your first year.

You will study in the EFY Studio, which reflects the layout of a modern office and will familiarise you with the style of a professional working environment.

Once you have completed the units that comprise the EFY, you will need to choose an engineering major. In 2014 it costs roughly $3,025 but that does not include books blah blah blah... the list goes on for ever n ever... but please double check this by phoning.... he also needs a ATAR of at least 80 preferably covering

  11. l was in the same boat as you.... best money l paid for was going to a book store and buying a how to write an aussie CV/ Resume $19.95 especially in some sectors they are looking for something different than in the uk.... they don't want ur entire history for start.

    Hi All,

I am looking for a new job and have spent the last few weeks applying for jobs I am suitable for but getting no interviews. I think my CV is 'too British' and not suitable for the Australian job market so want to re write it. From looking online there are a number of companies that can re do it for approximately $95.

Has anyone used a service like this? Can you recommend anyone?

I would be grateful for any advice!

    Thanks,

    Louise

  12. l wouldn't really push any direction.... e.g. Son when 5ish proudly announced he wanted to be a doctor.... l was chuft to bits that he was already captured by doing something wonderful...... driving to school (we lived in the countryside) he proudly announced he had changed his mind... curiosity got the better of me and l made the mistake of asking..... his reply whilst admiring the fields whizzing by......l am going to be a scarecrow.......... l never asked him again what he wanted to do when leaving school........... l am either gonna be a proud mother or l am going to have to buy a farm..... by the way he is sixteen now.... in year 11 and has set his sights on neurosurgeon ... there is hope yet.... l am saving all old clothes and a straw hat just incase..............

My eldest is thirteen, and he is starting to think about what he wants to do with the rest of his life. I am in IT, and having watched my industry get outsourced to India, I would never recommend anyone goes into IT, although I love my job. My wife is a teacher, and she hates the way that children are now classed as assets that can have education invested into them to later start producing for the economy. She loves to teach, but she would never recommend teaching to anyone. I'll give a brief rundown on their skills.

Eldest (13) is okay academically - mainly b's with some a's. Very creative, very good at design. Good at empathizing with people, although not really a people person. Doesn't want to be rich - just wants to be comfortable.

Middle child (12) - more a's than b's, very good at maths, very good with people, wants lots of money. Not very creative.

Youngest is too young to think about it - but he is very bright, and very quick on the tongue.

I would be interested in anything you thing could specifically interest them, or if you just love your job, please tell.

  13. Oh what fun.... l remember doing this when in the uk.... l ended up knowing more about the uk than my English OH/friends. The difference when l did the actual test at the centre the English one wouldn't tell you what percentage you got... you either passed or didn't. l mean what's the point in that. Get a highlighter and just get dates and important sentences in ur head... if you read it like a book it doesn't sink in. GOOD LUCK

My husband has to sit this for his permanent residency. I absolutely completely and fully understand the reasons and logic behind it, although, let's be honest how many British people know the answer to the questions on British history.

    http://ukcitizenshipsupport.com/free-tests/

how did you do? I didn't do that well :embarrassed: I'll be honest history was never my strong point. We'll be swotting for the next few weeks.

  14. Hi kooky

Don't know where you are looking to buy but l would really consider to start with just a house bought outright... pools are very much an ongoing cost and if people be truthful that after the first year or less the novelty wears off and to have no mortgage and freedom and maybe in the future upgrade and have all that equity to play with l would say that to get even a little mortgage you will only use a pool for the most 4 months (at a push) a year. a mortgage is an expensive thing to be paying off just for a pool. [

come down under . settle down have fun without having to contemplate mortgages... best advice l ever got from an aussie........... find a friend with a pool .......... lol .

Does anyone know what sort of situation you need to be in to get a mortgage in oz? We have a good amount to buy (could buy outright 3/4 bed) but would like to maybe get a small mortgage so we can afford a pool. We want to but as soon as possible as we think it'd be better to use the money on a house rather than renting and paying out each month.

What at I need to know is if you can get a mortgage without a permanent job - if we get supply teaching for example? Also is there a difference because we will have a large deposit?

    Thanks.

  15. If you feel you have been fired unfairly , you need to put a complaint in within 21 days......A small business employer will be required to provide evidence of compliance with the Code if the employee makes a claim for unfair dismissal to Fair Work Australia, including evidence that a warning has been given (except in cases of summary dismissal). Evidence may include a completed checklist, copies of written warning(s), a statement of termination or signed witness statements.

Under the Fair Dismissal Code, employees of small businesses cannot make a claim for unfair dismissal in the first 12 months after being hired. Employees of larger businesses are able to make a claim for unfair dismissal at 6 months. kind of a double edge sword if you ask me... but they still have to follow rules. check this all out at http://www.fairwork.gov.au/ Answers you want are in the FAQ

    Hey guys,

I've tonight just been fired, whilst off with flu this week! Any employment lawyers out there who can offer some advice? I was given termination without notice, even though I am out of my 3 month probation, and have not broken any rules in their employment contract. I am going to be contacting the Fair Work Ombudsman about it, but it seems like they have no right to do this?

    Any comments appreciated.

  16. they might be limited but go on realestate.com.au and tick animal friendly.... click on the house advertising and then see who the estate agent is... get their number and have a personal chat to see how many doggy friendly houses they have on their books... do this with several agents you might get a higher result ....

  17. Hi, you haven't mention which state you are in. Could help if someone is over east. WA is not big on sponsoring disability as they are ten a penny here, from what l have heard most become students of community services IV or diploma ( not sure which one) and then get a bridging visa until they get PR. whilst on the bridging visa it involves achieving the points system that you can find on the visa site etc. might be worth considering as an option.

I have a disabled daughter, and one of her support workers, who is absolutely brilliant with her in every respect, is in Oz as a de facto on a 457 visa and her partner now wants to "get her off his" visa. She loves her work and is keen to stay, and from my point of view I'm desperate for her to stay given the fantastic progress my daughter is making with her help.

Can anybody help with visa advice?

  18. hellllooooo...... Zim-pom-aussie here lol

We have nothing to complain about here... suppose once u experience Zim... survive the uk winters... this is as close as you are getting to somewhere u can call home  To get an idea of where is best to live etc you need to see what others have to say about the state they live in.. we settled well in Perh.... very much like Harare.. without the burgalar bars and fences lol

  19. Don't touch it.... its a money spinner ... they dont give you anything that you can't find out yourself

hi there checked out mining australia website out the other day and wonder if anyone has used the service

    1. Was it value for money

    2. Did the information they gave help you get into mining once out in aus
