Advice on Shipping

Hi guys

Trying to work out the best advice around shipping, got a one beddie flat in London, two bikes, bed, sofa, couple of appliances and a wardrobe full of clothes...want to get our stuff shipped to Sydney.

Any advice on what not to take due to quarantine problems? Or are you better just putting everything in half a crate, then getting it all sprayed anyway? Does anyone know ballpark what it would cost?

Cheers

James.

Bring the 2 bikes and some clothes in your luggage allowance, donate the furniture and appliances to family/friends/charity shops and send the rest in a couple of tea chests. That way you travel light!

I went to the UK 16 years ago with 2 suitcases, I returned to Oz 6 years ago with a 40ft container, a wife and 2 kids. Always best to start by travelling light as you never know what you will gather along the way!

The Australian governments department of Agriculture website is really good for understanding quarantine issues - including a list of common items of quarantine concern, hopefully should help http://www.agriculture.gov.au/biosecurity/import/moving-to-australia

Why not get a quote for shipping and compare with the cost of replacement when you get there to work out if its worth shipping? Allow for the hassle of getting rid of things here and buynig new when you arrive in Sydney. To get a ball park i'd email/phone with a list of your items to a few removal companies who will be able to give you a ball park. Try the FIDI website for a list of certified international companies.

Look at a MoveCube also. Can fit heaps in self packing. We used one.

Don't need to treat it unless its on the not allowed in list. In which case you'll need a certificate to prove its been treated or else pay to have it done so in Aus and have it cost a small fortune. General household stuff will be fine as is. Bikes will need to be spotless, I'd take those as part of your luggage allowance if they are road bikes and light enough. 30kg as standard on a number of airlines these days, so a bike in bike box leaves plenty for luggage.

You must remember to properly arrange the furniture in container. Dependent on the type of furniture it can be arranged in layers separated from each other be special platforms. Some of furniture can be also stack one on the other. Large and heavy items are stored at the bottom. Lighter can be set on them especially cardboard boxes. It is always good to fill the empty space between furniture with shock absorbing foam.

What is the best way to do this if you don't need a whole shipping container? I saw MoveCube by Seven Seas with a 3m square container which looks like a good idea. Will check out pricing as this seems like a good idea.

Most international removals company offer two types of service for smaller loads. Groupage/Shared Load service is where they load all your items in a container with consignments of other customers of theirs heading to the same area so freight wise you only pay for the space in the container that you take up. This is a slightly slower service because they have to wait to collect and consolidate everyones things but the is the cheapest way if you're not in a hurry.

The other option is LCL (Less than container load) which is where your things are loaded into a wooden crate and then your moving company has a larger freight consolidator ship them and then their destination branch will pick it up from the consolidator and deliver to you, again meaning you only pay for the space in the container you use. This service is almost as quick as an exclusive container so best for when you only have a small load but still need it as quickly as possible. You can ask your removal company for quotes via both methods of shipment to allow you to compare.

Hope that helps?
