Hornsby???

Hi,

Having recently arrived from UK. I am trying to ascertain the most suitable and affordable area to rent. I know everyone's needs are different, but basically with three young children aged 5, 4 & 1 today, close to schools and other amenities, transport links into town, bus or train, not too far from the beach all for around 750 per week.

Is that asking too much?

I have been informed that Hornsby would be a good place start.

I am trying to canvas the opinion of others.

Many thanks for reading.

Martin

I suppose it depends on where you are working? If you are working in the city and you can get a place for the same price in Chatswood as in Hornsby, then Chatswood would probably be better. I fancy prices are a little lower in Hornsby however, and, like Chatswood, it is a major shopping/admin centre so there are plenty of services.

I don't like Chatswood, not sure why, but I do not care for it. Plenty of shops, services, good public transport, but at night it seems to be 'dead'. There is a new entertainment/theatre complex that has recently opened though. I've not been to Hornsby for a long time so might be time for a look.

If you are not working in Sydney CBD, then I suggest you find somewhere suitable (if possible) as close to where you are going to be working.

MichaelIP, MARYROSE02,

Thank you for your input, we had initially hoping to be around the northern beaches area, Dee Why etc, unfortunately not a lot of availability within our budget. Heard some good things about Collaroy, Narrenbeen and Mona Vale, regarding schools and friendship groups. Any additional info would help.

Thanks again.

Those Northern Beach subs are all great although a little isolated when it comes to getting to the City or other parts of Sydney as there is no train line just buses. But if you live and work there no problem. You would never need to come to the City.

If you want the beach lifestyle maybe you could afford the Central Coast or Wollongong and get train to Sydney?

Did you say where you are working?

My brother lives at Picnic Point in Revesby and Panania area south west of City. It is about 35 min by train to City and I have come to like the area.

Hi MaryRose,

Thanks for your reply, working in Chatswood, I know there are no train links to the northern beaches, but if there were the prices would be even higher. It'll take about 1 hour 15 to get to Chatswood in the morning on the bus(car will come later). A small price to pay for the lifestyle me thinks, it also good bus links into the city and Manly.

Cheers,

Martin

Can't you get a train from Hornsby to Chatwood? I live in Pymble and work in the city, and used to get the train from here. I used to have to get the Hornsby train from Central (which passed Chatswood!)

Maybe 1 hr, 15 mins if for getting from Northern Beaches to Chatswood? I don't think there is a direct bus route? I'll have to check the Sydney Buses timetable.

And there IS a direct bus service, taking one hour, (well, fifty nine minutes.) I never knew that. There are other services involving two or three buses.

We live in Frenchs Forest in the Northern Beaches, we pay $850 pw for a small 3 bed. I love the area, people and school. We're about a 10 to 15 minute drive from Chatswood, and less than a 10 minutes drive to the beaches. However, they are about to build a new hospital here, which means 3 years of road upgrades and construction - so I am not sure it will be such a lovely place to live in the near future. Close by suburbs are Forestville, Davidson and Belrose - but you'll be hard pushed to find a family home for under $850 pw.

Hornsby is a good area, perhaps Hornsby Heights if you want to get away from the mall and get some stunning views. Hornsby North is one of the best public schools in Sydney. Further away north you get some good suburbs too. Hornsby isn't really close to beaches, probably a 35 minute drive on a decent run.

Sydney is astronomically expensive to rent, so much so, we are considering moving up to the Central Coast if my husband can get work, though I love the Northern Beaches so much. Good luck with the search.
