Migrating to Sydney on 8/20/2014

Hi everyone! Nice to meet you fellow backpackers! :)

I'm Joanna, age 29, and from NYC~ I'm currently on a 1-year sabbatical from work (since middle of July) and decided to take advantage of it by travelling to Australia.

I'm leaving for Sydney on a WHV on 8/20/2014 (and arriving on 8/22/2014). I'm lots excited and a little nervous as this is my first time travelling overseas by myself for a period over a month.

So far my itinerary at arrival is to take the train from the airport to Central Station and head to Chinatown to pick up my bank cards, grab dimsum or lunch around the area, get a prepaid phone plan, and find an a shop/cafe with wifi so I can apply for a TFN. (I'm also hoping on obtaining a RSA license sometime later.)

Does anyone know if amaysim (on Optus 3G network) has good service in Sydney and maybe in Perth? Does anyone have other recommendation for an affordable prepaid plan with lots of data?

I have already found a houseshare rental in Greystanes which hopefully will be the place I can stay for about 5-6 months. I was told the property about 40 minutes away from the CBD.

Does anyone know what would be the most affordable way to travel around Sydney? Subway? Bus? I do sort of wish travelling by subway/bus is as inexpensive as the MTA here in NYC (which is $2.50 each fare no matter the distance and not calculated by the station).

Is anyone else in Sydney that would like to meet up? :D

Hi and welcome to the forum. It sounds like you are very organised.

Optus works fine in the city so don't worry about that. In regards to public transport costs I think they were changing this when we were down there a few weeks back. @maryrose should be able to give you more information. I don't know Greystanes sorry if it's on the train station I think it may be Merrylands (sp) Take a look here for more info on public transport and how to get from A to B http://www.transportnsw.info/en/index.page?

New update, I left Sydney for Perth on 25/08/2014 and found a flatshare the next day. :)

I'm currently living Northeast of Perth (in Maylands) and while I love that I was able to find a flat with a private room for a good price, I have to say I miss Sydney.

For the last 3 days, I've sent out my resume to probably over 20 companies on seek.com.au for a temp receptionist position and have only gotten back generic responses - none of it good.

I also applied for my TFN, got my RSA, and going for a barista & latte art 5.5 hour course training this Friday on 5/09/2014.

Not sure how well I'll fare with seeking jobs in the hospitality field as I have no experience whatsoever. I've only ever worked in admin and accounting/finance fields and have had 0 luck with job offers so far. A little disheartening but still waiting for good news from the other companies so fingers crossed. :)

Took me over a month before finally getting a temporary job in the city. My advice would be go directly to the recruitment agencies, they may treat you like a piece of meat at times but they will find you the work as they can earn easy money from people on a WHV! Just be patient and you will eventually end up with a job, then before you know it you will be getting offered jobs whilst already in emloyment.....like buses!!
