Getting a rental with dogs

Recommended Posts

We already have one dog and are considering getting another. Looking to make the move next year and just wondering whether having another dog will dramatically hinder our chances of securing a rental property. We are quite prepared to pay the additional shipping and associated fees, but obviously don't want to jeopardise our chances of finding somewhere nice to live. We are currently in a rental in the UK (sold our house to raise the funds) so we would have access to a good reference.

Thanks Cath

I would wait till you are here before getting a second dog. Trying to rent with one dog is not easy and most owners expect the dog to live outside. You need to put a portfolio together, this should have references from your agent, copies of all vacinations ( you should check with your vet if you will need different vacinations for Aus, photos of inside and outside your current home to show the dog is not a problem, even a letter (with an email address so it can be varified) from next door property saying the dog does not bark all day long copies of micro chip numbers and council rego to show you are responcible. Many agents ask for an extra bond if you have a pet. On an upside though many rental ads say - No Pets - contact the agent and show them your portfolio and ask them to ask the owner if it is possible to have your dog as many agents just say - no. Good Luck

We have had many new arrivals stay with us initially, many of whom have owned either cats or dogs, and none have had any major issues finding a rental (all within 3-4 weeks of arriving)

If a rental doesn't state "pet friendly" it doesn't mean pets are not allowed. You just have to ask.

As Tina mentions, I would personally wait until you arrive before buying another dog (unless its a very specific breed that is not often found in Oz)
