Hello,
I was granted permenant residency in September 2021.
I am considering a career change into the maritime industry which will require me to return to the UK for a 3 year sponsored course prior to employment (with a UK organisation) which will require me to spend long periods at sea.
It is my intention to settle in Australia after I qualify as a seafarer. However, I will not be able to fulfil the 2-year residence requirement and am concerned I will be unable to demonstrate substantial ties to the benefit of Australia, therefore find it difficult to get a RRV (and/or citizenship). I have investments (shares) but no family or property in Australia.
I note that being a crew member of a ship is one exempted career for the residency requiremnt for citizenship, however I am unclear whether pursuring this career change is going to require me to forefit my PR and ambitions for citizenship, in which case I would need need to consider this very carefully.
If anyone is able to share thoughts on my prospects for successfully gaining a RRV (potentially multiple) or Citizenship, I'd be most grateful.
Thank you in advance.

Thank you for your reply.
Unfortunately delaying the change is not an option as I have already deferred the start date once and I'm highly unlikely to get another opportunity, not to mention that I will be no spring chicken by the time I qualify.
By pessimistic, do you mean pessimistic about my chances even if maintaining a home?
I'm wondering if the 157 might be an option but I'm a little confused about the eligibility for the 157 visa - according to the home affairs website:
"If the requirements for subclass 155 RRV are not met, and the applicant is eligible for a subclass 157 RRV, the maximum travel facility that can be granted with a subclass 157 RRV is 3 months."
But it's not clear to me if the requirements listed are for the 155 or 157.
