  1. Hello everyone,

I have just got my visa 173 today. Thank you everyone foe being so helpful in this group. I am currently in Australia. Do I need to tell immigration regarding activating my visa? As it said I should not arrive after june 14, 2023.

should i apply for 143 now or i can wait for another 6 months?

    Applied 173 28/6/2016

asked for further documents 28/4/2022 (got a phone call from immigration regarding they nearly reached the cap for this financial year so they asked me to get all documents ready asap)

    applied all further documents 25/5/2022

    asked for second vac 9/6/2022

    visa granted 14/6/2022

If you don’t get it by end June you’ll get it pretty quickly after they move into July. Their financial year runs from 1st July to end June so it should be sometime this year. Probably quicker than 143 as 173 don’t pay the big AOS charge I think.

This is really true! I was like: new fiancial year is not too far away… health check is probably the hardest thing. Cant get appointment until Mid June.

my advise is: keep checking and refreshing the page. I am lucky enough to get a spot for health check in 3 weeks.

So finger crossed i can make it before June

    Hello all,

many update?! I saw someone who was called from August 2016?!?!

I’ve got phone call from immigration after they emailed me regarding providing more documents. She said: they nearly reached quota for this year. I need to be hurry otherwise i have to wait until next year.

    applied 173 June 28th 2016

  4. I applied my 173 visa 28/6/2016 when it said processing time 12-18 months. Now it’s gone up to 64 months and I am 64 months now still no news.

high blood pressure only cost $10

i am in aus at the moment due to covid on 600 visa. Always have private health insurance with HCF $46 monthly. i can see doctor with gap free, had cardiology done free etc. so HCF is pretty good! My visa will expire July 2022. Hopefully i will have some great new by then

so glad i found this group. Thank you everyone

May I please ask another question related to the 2nd VAC charge?

I applied for my parents in 2017 and just wanted to check when we are required to pay the charge, it will be the charge applicable in 2017, when we applied right? (Not the most upto date cost).

Thanks a lot and good luck with everything else ☺️

hi Gadget, 👌🥰💙 congratulations! When did you apply your application?

I don’t know how long it takes for new visitor visa. They don’t like repeated applications but may be OK during Covid  times. As far as 3 year visa is concerned you need permission to be able to apply onshore as it’s normally applied for offshore. If you go down that route before you’ve been granted 173 it will stop you applying for 143 until it runs out. Getting 870 visa before applying for permanent 143 visa wont let you apply for any parent visa

Oh right! Thank you for your information. I will go ahead with simple tourist visa 600 then.

    Hi Jess2201,

Have you applied for a Visitor (subclass 600) visa? If so, the grant can take several months, during which you will be on a bridging visa. My wife and I have recently done the same - going from one 600 to another. In normal times we would have gone beyond the 12 months in 18 months rule, but Immigration have looked at the current Covid situation it seems and decided to be more generous. We mentioned that we had 143 visa applications submitted in Aug 2016; showed we had finances and medical insurance in place; cited the lack of flights and difficulties in travel.

This was our second additional 600 visa. For the first one, we needed to do medicals. For this one, we had to supply police clearances for the last 10 years (in our case UAE, Germany and Australia), presumably because we have been onshore since March 2020 and the new visa is valid until end Dec 2021.

    Good luck!

    Hi Paul,

So i came here March 2020 on visa 600. Then I applied another 600, needed to do health check and police check in vietnam and in Australia for the last 10 years as well and this visa will be expired Aug 2021. Now i need to apply for another visa 600 and want to ask for another year.
thank you i will add in the information that I have submitted 173 since June 2016 and i ve got medical insurance for the last 18 months in Australia. How long did you ask for a visa extension?

Have you been asked for further documents. ? This means they are considering granting. your visa, BUT if you look at other timelines it will take months before you actually get the grant - you’ve said your visitor visa is running out in 30 days. Unless you apply for another visa to remain whilst waiting for 173 you will risk overstaying - that’s enough sometimes to stop you from getting a visa!

Havent been contacted by immigration yet.
i have just finished preparing documents for a visitor visa today. They triple the price now. Will it take years to process? Cos i am considering between visitor visa and the other visitor visa that i pay $5000 for 3 years visa. I am not sure how long will they extend my visitor visa this time because i has extended it once due to covid last year.

Thank you and yes the ticket prices are outrageous, but hopefully we will get a little luck. Let's see how we fare 🙂

My reply you quoted was in response to Tony’s post about being granted 143. He is offshore.

I know you are currently in Australia on a visitor visa shortly running out but can you answer the following questions please?

    1) have  you applied for 173 ?

    2) when did you apply?

Sorry Linda, i didnt try to find the quote

you quoted to me, only tried to find your name lol. Dont worry about the quote. I am just a bit excited that if they can grant me a visa while i am in Australia.

    i have applied visa 173 on June 30th, 2016

Fingers crossed - keep us all informed please. 🤞🤞

    Hey Linda,

i have just read this from 173 visa on immigration website:

Note: The Department is not asking Family visa applicants to travel offshore at this time. A temporary concession to allow visas to be granted in Australia is available to eligible Parent visa applicants from 24 March 2021.

so i think they will grant a visa in Australia if the applicant is in Australia

Applications before 1june 2018 have application date as queue date. You just get an acknowledgment that’s all. I think you will have to re apply for another visitor visa as it takes months to process once they start asking for more  documents etc. Once you have been  granted 173 you can apply for 143 and these seem to be granted fairly quickly at present. Given that planes are leaving  Australia and there’s no barrier for temporary visa holder to leave now they may not grant another visitor visa - I don’t know. You probably need to ask an agent.  Grant of 173 means you can stay for two years so you need to apply for 143.  If you are offshore when 173 is granted you cannot use it to enter Australia yet as it is  classed as a temporary visa but you can apply straightaway after it’s granted for  143.

So you mean i can apply for 143 once i have 173. 143 can apply onshore or offshore. But i will get bridging visa to stay in Australia while waiting for the decision of 143?

and how long does it roughly take since immigration contacts you regarding the processing of 173 until you finally get visa 173 if you know please?

It’s in the same queue as 143 and that queue  is dealt with in strict date order. They have been granting visas for some May 2016 applications but met the caps a while ago so couldn’t  issue any more. The new financial year started today so they will start granting visas again. You may hear something soon.

Thank you so much for your reply. They never emailed or advised the queue date etc so supposed to be the date I applied for 173? Finger crossed it is my turn soon. Its been 5 years. I am in Australia at the moment with tourist visa expire in 30 days. So should I wait for that visa or apply for extension of my tourist vísa?
furthermore, i need to apply for 143 and will the wait same as 173, another 5 years? I can’t remember after applying 143 do I have right to stay in Australia?

i am so glad i finally found this group so at least I know what is going on!!!
