  1. It depends how long you are going to be renting for but I would advise looking into high schools and rent in the zone for high school you would like your children to go to.

I know it's difficult to decide that without seeing schools, but it sounds like you may be applying for yr 7 place in a state high school while renting, so you will want to be in zone for a good one.

    Hello,

I am currently in SA on a 489 visa. I will be stung on the stamp duty if I purchase a property.

I am wondering if I took out a joint mortgage with an Aussie citizen if the tax on “foreign investors” will be reduced please?

I did a bit of Googling without much luck!

    Cheers

Hi JetBlast, I think we've chatted here before we got our 489 visas. Hope the move's worked out well for you?

I'm in same situation. We've settled well in Adelaide and I hate the thought of throwing away money on rent for another 4 years, so debating about taking the hit with the extra costs. Also looking into idea of buying house with my sister who is a citizen, but not sure if that's going to be too complicated with regards to tax implications for her.

  3. Has anyone bought a house as temporary resident in SA?

I've just read about temporary residents being classed as foreign investors and therefore needing to pay 7% extra stamp duty and apply for FIRB permission - is this correct?

Feel it's really unfair if we are to be classed as a foreign investor when working and living here and paying tax 😞

  5. We are in same position with 489 and not being able to get medicare. I just read 489 has been replaced with 491 - which does get medicare!!

We came over in September with our cat and did struggle with renting in units (they are the ones which have STRATA)

Houses generally better option with pets as no STRATA

Take a look at domain.com.au and realestate.com.au for rental properties

    Hi SoniaH,

was aitsl happy with the letter Sutherland provided? Because they have given me this 2 page letter.

Yes, sounds like one I got and that was fine. Main thing they need is number of teaching hours verified.

I used it to have my qualifications checked for teacher registration in SA and it was fine too.

I wrongly assumed the positive AITSL skills assessment meant my qualifications had been checked enough- oh no! had to get them all copied and certified again and sent to teacher registration in SA so they could say yes I'm qualified to teach here-bit annoying but didn't take too long.

You should be fine on 489 visa, we are on that one too and and have both got jobs in SA

Very happy to help if you have any other questions
