Thanks for all the responses. This has not much to do with the skills assessment, that one is done already. For medical people, the 189 documentation says:

Medical practitioners

One of these certificates issued by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency:

• unconditional or general medical registration
• conditional specialist registration – which allows you to practice only in your speciality with no further training or supervision requirements

You must be registered at the time we invite you to apply.

 

Which they very helpfully put under the item "Skills assessment documents". However, to get one of those, you need to have a job offer (which we are still waiting for on paper, we know we have that job, but we need to have a paper trail for AHPRA). 

So the question is, can we apply for the visa and add the AHPRA reg later, or do we need to wait for the AHPRA reg to be finalised - basically voiding our current invitation to apply for the 189.

No the registration is different from the skills assessment. The skills assessment for Q says that she can perform her normal job, but with supervision - which is roughly what everyone gets when they do a skills assessment for this profession. The AHPRA registration is merely a 'this doctor is allowed to work here', comparable to a GMC registration in the UK.

We - Q, R and little A - are in the process of moving our family over to Perth. We are in the lucky situation that Q is an oncologist and based on her skills and points she has been invited to apply for an 189. Unfortunately, we missed one big thing in the documentation pack. As a medical doctor, you need to be registered at AHPR before you can  apply for the 189. After looking at the AHPRA website, it seems you need to have a job offer before you can register - which we verbally have but we are waiting for the final offer on paper.

Does anyone know if we would start the 189 application now and we wanted to add the AHPRA registration later if that would be grounds to deny the visa application? Or is there a grace period to provide the documentation?
