    Shipping. I second Movecube

Flights. Book as early as possible as contrary to what some think, flight become more expensive as time goes on.

Jobs. Will depend on what you do. Note though that Sheffield isn't exactly known as somewhere that jobs are plentiful.

    Thank you!

We will look into booking flights as soon as we know the exact date. I've been looking at prices and so far stayed the same.

I work in retail and my partner works in Health and Safety. Hopefully we get there in good timing of some jobs.

If you've only got a bedroom-full, then you'll either have to ship a few boxes, or use a Movecube.  I think Seven Seas is the only removalist company that offers the Movecube - everyone else does huge containers.

It can take weeks for your stuff to arrive, but if you're able to stay with family until it does, then it won't really matter.

It's very difficult to get work before you arrive, unless you're in a highly-skilled shortage occupation, so it's probably not worth trying.

One tip - banking.  Do not close your Australian bank accounts. You can open a UK bank account on the day you arrive, but you can only put money in - it can take weeks to get the account "activated" so you can take money out!  So you'll need your Australian account and debit/credit cards for a while after you arrive.

About two months before you leave, tell your Australian banks that you're leaving, and give them the address of your relatives (where you'll be staying).   Don't use "c/-" - just give them the address as if it was your own home.  A month before you go, order a printed bank statement.   That way, the statement will be waiting for you at your relatives' house when you arrive, and you can use it as "proof of address"  when you go to open your UK bank account.  The bank will ask you if it's your permanent address and you'll just have to fib and say yes.

The thing is, if you don't do that, then you can't activate a UK bank account until you can provide proof of address, and for most banks, that means you have to wait until you receive an electricity bill or bank statement at your new address.

Thank you so much! That’s really useful with the banking, I wouldn’t have even thought of receiving post as proof yet!! I will definitely make a note of that and get on to it just before we leave! I’ll have a look into the movecubes aswell as that sounds better for us as we do not have a lot of stuff to ship over.

    Great advide, thank you!

I've never done it but here's were I'd start. Money, you're going to need quite a bit.  The cost of shipping, flights, hire car/buy a car, rent (which may be high depending on where you're heading to) and of course you have to live until you find work and start getting paid (most jobs are paid monthly in the uk so budget that you are likely to have to wait a month before getting paid or at least until the next pay date in the month depending when the company pays salaries. Back to rent, if you have a job in place before looking for rentals you should be fine. If not you are likely to need to pay six months up front although again this may depend on where you live (some landlords may be desperate to get tenants but certainly around the area I live they won't take people without a job but some will accept six months upfront. Many areas have Facebook groups and it would be a good idea to get on them and ask about any rentals going and I'd also email/contact local letting agents prior to you coming to get the heads up on what's needed/likelihood of getting something. Money is the number one thing to concentrate on, everything else should fall into place. Re flights, check with sky scanner for best deals. If you know a date then I'd book if I was you.

Thank you for your advice! We are moving back to Sheffield (first time for me, home for Robert) and will be moving in with family to help us get onto our own feet. We will be buying a car second hand, we've looked at a few already and there are some around at a good price, which gives us hope for when we go! Thankfully we have been saving for a little while now and have plans for accomodation sorted. We've been looking into jobs for the time being but are thinking to look closer to the time. We're both excited to go so once we've got a date we'll take eyiur advice and book! Thank you again :)

  5. Hi there,

We are a couple both 21 years old and are moving back to the UK from Perth hopefully in August. We have made our decision together and are both looking forward to moving. We'd love to keep this positive and hear lots of positive stories about anyone else moving back to the UK from Australia!

As this is the first time we are moving without parents or anyone else we are looking for some advice or tips on making the move easier for us. We're not too sure where to start with the process so would love any help with any part of of it, please and thank you!!

When is the best time to ship your belongings over, how early? Are there any shipping companies you would recommend? We don't have much stuff to ship over, maybe one large bedroom full?.

How far in advance do you book your tickets? Last minute or when you decide on a date? Any preferred airlines with baggage allowance/price etc?

Is there any point in looking for jobs now and applying or waiting until we are over there?

What reasons do you have for moving back? What has made you go back to the home land?

We appreciate any help or positive support from anyone, so thank you in advance!

    Abby and Robert :)
