  1. This course is recognised by the WA Department of Education and the WA Teaching Registration Board, for teaching kindy through to year 3. It qualifies primary teachers as early childhood teachers. Primary teachers can no longer teach kindy and pre-primary in WA, which is why this course was initially established.

However, I am not sure if it provides enough for visa requirements for you- they may require younger years.

In WA, kindy is for children who turn four by June 30th in the same year of entry, so there are lots of three year olds. Pre-Primary applies to children who turn five by June 30th, again, in the same year of entry, so four and five year olds start the first year of compulsory education in WA.

Brilliant, thanks ever so much for your help. I'll look in to this.

  2. Hi all,

I hope that you don't mind me popping on to this thread, it's all very insightful as I'm just starting to seriously look in to how I can get my family and I to Perth.

Currently, I have a 3 year law degree (hons) and a primary PGCE 5-11yrs. I am about to embark on my NQT year. Unfortunately, although I have experience teaching year 1, it doesn't cover Early Years.

I think Selina mentioned a course that could be done in Perth that takes 1 year? Please could you tell me where that was? I've looked at a couple on the internet which I think are what I need, but I need to do more research and enquire.

Good luck to all of you going through the visa process at the moment!

Thanks in advance for all help and advice.

  3. Many thanks again for your responses.

Unfortunately, my degree is in law, so maths and science for secondary is out I'm afraid.

My other half is currently a plasterer and has a past in the coal mining industry. However. He is 50yrs old now so he cannot be a main visa applicant.

I've been looking in to doing the Early Years 1 year course in/around Perth, but then, you can only work for 20hrs a week (or 40hrs per fortnight).

It's so difficult, like many, this has been something that I've thought about on and off for years and now the family agree, I cannot use my current qualifications to get us out there!!

    Thanks again

  4. Many thanks Tickled Pink, I appreciate your response.

Im not sure whether or not to look at secondary, it's such a difficult decision as that could be withdrawn from the skills list by the time I look again. I wonder if I should re-think altogether?!

I'll look in to the recent news you mentioned. Thanks again.

  5. Hello, I wonder if you could help, I am looking to apply for a visa for WA. As I understand it, primary school teachers are no longer on the skills list (they are in Queenland & Victoria, but only if you offer MFL, sadly, I don't). Although I have experience in Year 1, this does not count towards being an early years teacher (which is on the skills list) as my PGCE covers 5-11yrs.

If you were in my position, what would you do? Are my only options to do another PGCE in Early Years or Secondary? I've considered a MA in Early Years, although that wouldn't offer me 45 days supervised teaching experience.

I will be the main visa applicant for my family should we ever get to the point of being able to apply.

Questions, questions!! Thanks in advance for all help and advice.
