My parents are grey nomads and head north every year for july - sept.
This leaves their farm half way towards Mt BawBaw empty.
We take ours and another three families to the farm for a week in the school holidays.
One of our days is then spent at the mountain with toboggans.
With upto 14 of us, we have a great time.
We try to get back for a weekend during august as well.
BawBaw is only about $45 per car per day.
We all have our own snow chains but (touch wood) have never had to use them in three years so far.
sounds great so much fun, I can't wait its been something i've wanted to do for such along time, infact left too long.

Hi
thanks for the information. I'll certainly check the creeks out.

The last few years there has been a Naked Bike Ride through Melbourne. Would you be up for that?
LOL no i don't think i will

You've definitely got to try cycling beach Road, thousands of cyclists ride it every weekend and it's a nice flat ride following the coastline. There are bike lanes on the road and also a dedicated bike path alongside.
As for cycling on the roads being dangerous in Australia, it is no more dangerous than Britain. The roads are wider and there are a lot of roads with cycle lanes built onto them and generally people will give you enough space as they pass. As an avid cyclist here and in Britain before I left, I would say I feel much safer cycling in Australia than I ever did in Britain.
If you are looking for more of a challenge then why not try the 7 peaks challenge, it runs from October through to March and involves cycling to the top of the 7 mountains in Victoria which have ski resorts on top. I completed it this season and it was great fun but obviously a reasonable level of fitness is required to get you to the top and some bike handling skill will help you get down again safely.
thanks for the information its great, I will keep it all in mind

In terms of workplace, it is less collaborative. Colleagues will compete against one another even to the extent of sabotaging each others' work. Hierarchy does not count for much; people don't do what the boss says, just because the boss is in charge. Everything has to be done by persuasion. People don't stick to agreements and will pretend that agreements were never reached, even when presented with written evidence to the contrary. Jobs seem less secure and there is a perpetual turnover in staff when the annual re-structuring takes place. Staff will not help a manager, even when it is obvious that a manager is making a mistake. Bullying is rampant and pretty much accepted. Careers can go down as well as up.
In terms of customer service; it stops the moment you have signed on the dotted line. The smiles will fade and if you haven't got what you wanted or expected, tough. There is little desire to remedy a situation. Complaints tend to be met with denials. Compensation never happens and you have to go to court for it. There is an Australian Consumer Law but you have to quote it to get anyone to give you what you are entitled to, and even then, some companies will just refuse or delay things. Especially as a new migrant, people will see you as fair game for being ripped off.
I agree with some information you have mentioned, I have never seen work place bullying as bad as i have witnessed in Australia, its a concern and no matter what is mentioned it never gets any better. It's disturbing to a point when it becomes a workplace culture. Yep and good careers can go down hill fast, ive experienced it.

I just think cycling on Oz roads is too dangerous having known several people who have been killed or severely injured by cars and only last month my son-in-law was lucky to escape with just a broken collar bone. I would stick to designated cycle paths or mountain bike trails of which there are plenty around.
Hi
thanks yeah I guess the Melbourne roads would be dangerous, cycle paths ideal and I want scenic routes, I guess you can get cycle maps

Originally from Cambridge in the UK. We only arrived 2 weeks ago. Staying in point cook at the moment and love the area but unfortunately very few of the jobs i'm applying for are this side of the city so we will likely end up east, or in Geelong.

Im from Leeds, been in oz almost 4 years. ive been to Geelong to visit a great aunt lovely place. research shows Point cook seems to be the english destination lol hope your enjoying your move from the UK

I'm surprised. Only recently arrived but from my minimal experience the western suburbs are nice, and close to the city.
(There are a few dodgy ones too lol... But there are everywhere).
At the end of the day given the size of the city though, where you live will be down to where you work. You wouldn't want to commute cross city on a daily basis.

Hi
I think I will need to take a trip over to check, i'm in Perth at the moment, yes I agree it will depend on where i work. I've been checking my profession out and i could be anywhere really.
where are you from originally??? Melbourne will be very different from Perth with all the suburbs
-
I'd suggest you look at Ringwood and surrounds. About 30 mins to CBD by train, quite leafy, great shops, transport links and good schools. Due East of the city - fast freeway to Frankston for the beach in about half an hour.
For example http://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-vic-ringwood-418145430
thanks much appreciated

What is wrong with western suburbs? Are northern ok?

Hi
from advice, yes north, east, north-east, southeast etc hopefully i can come over to look for myself

You'll need to give an idea of budget and whether you are happy to live in a flat. Also whether or not you are likely to be working in the city. Remember Melbourne is over 100km side to side
Hi no i wouldn't be able to live in a flat with two dogs, approx 450 per week, i think anything approx upto 35km from cbd not west suburbs
-
Ill be hopefully moving over nearer to the end of the year, however as a single parent and will be renting, so need realisitic rental price not too bothered near the beach as can drive there, and nearer beach will be too costly, but nice area, good high school, have 2 small dogs, nice place for a run not west. any advice will be appreciated

And a huge range of different weather, and that is each day too:tongue:

Hi
Due to a separation a fresh start is needed, my girls are keen to move to Melbourne, we are in Perth and I like the Weather, is there anyone on here who has moved from Perth, and what are the best suburbs for myself with two girls 19years and 11years.
My 19 year old has a friend in Melbourne from perth and informed her to go east.
