  1. Interesting yes that s good point. I'm coming up to 2 years PQE so hopefully if they do change it, it might work in my favour! For me personally I they do make some changes as i'm stuck on 60 pts :)

Will be interesting to see if they add some other form of criteria - post qualification experience, for example ?

As far as I know, accountancy is one of the few occupations that you don't need this for a positive skill assessment

  2. Have you considered being the Primary applicant? I'm pretty sure Secondary Teachers are in demand and you might have a better chance of getting Visa more quickly? Then your wife could also get the 5 partner points.

    1. We were originally Family Sponsored 176 Offshore file back in early 2009..then came priority processing...we still hoped that it would be allocated within 5 or 6 years...no can do...Cap and Cease in September 2015. With the passing of time and change in age category, our options are so limited. It took time to figure this out and we figured Accountant through my spouse on 189 is a possibility...but now we come to learn that the occupation ceiling was already lowered from 10,000 to 5000 and maybe lower next fiscal year. It seems like it takes so much time just to get the skills assessed, documentation, etc together...by the time we are ready for the EOI...something will materially change that makes our new path unlikely...icon9.png

    2. Understood.

    3. My spouse is the main applicant. We will get 5 points (partner skills) for my skills assessed as a secondary teacher. Even though I am not the main applicant, could the demand for secondary teachers thus my qualifications as a partner be considered by DIBP when they look at the EOI with 60 points from my spouse's application as a factor to weigh in deciding who to invite (even with an automated system in place).

    4. So if you are not invited by the time the new skills list comes out for fiscal year 2016-2017 and Management Accountant is removed (hypothetically speaking), does that mean you cannot be invited during fiscal year 2016-2017?

  3. 1. Yes that right 8 month backlog. Zero chance with 60 points currently. I am waiting to see if DIBP bring in any changes to how they calculate points on 1st July.

    2. It doesn't cost any extra to get your Employment assessed at the same time as you are getting your qualifications done (with CPA anyway). Only post degree level qualification employment will be assessed as skilled so it is definitely worth getting the assessing body to do this. I had this problem as have 6 years work experience but CPA only assessed 1.5 yrs as skilled at the appropriate level. I wouldn't risk not having the employment assessed just in case you over claim.

    3. Yes NSW has Accountant on their list and you get 5 extra points on a 190 Visa, but they still have the same backlog as on a 189 Visa and tend to only invite people with either 70+5 or 65+5 and Superior English.

    4. Accountants are flagged and have been for the last couple of years I believe. I am concerned they might be removed but its just a case of waiting to see what happens. Possibly they will just reduce the occupation ceiling again to less than 2015-16 level of 2600 accountants. But this is anyone's guess, I don't think we will know until 1st July

  4. Sorry I cant help with the first question, but at the moment only 70 point accountants are being invited on the 189 visa and there is an 8 month backlog of 65 point accountants. So 60 pointers have a very low chance ( I guess I can say this as I am one of them!)

  5. Yeah costs seem high in Sydney, but im not sure how much higher than Perth is? We actually already had a rental lined up from a friend in Perth but will just have to see what happens I guess. Good luck with your adventure anyway! Any ideas when you are planning to travel?

  6. Ah well that's gives me a little bit of hope for sure! As you say maybe it was just lucky timing as it seems to be harder and harder to get an invite now. But we shall see! Glad i'm not the only one :) Were you planning on going to Sydney anyway? I actually wanted to go to Perth but if it gets me a Visa ill go to NSW for the 2 yrs then think about the move over

  7. No Penny, no degree which is where I have came unstuck! Just a stupid HND Business and Finance. If I had done 1 more year of study to top it up it to a degree that would have made all the difference, but unfortunately 20 year old me was more interested in going to work in Crete for a year! Doh :) But hey, not to worry eh

  8. Hi Everyone,

Got my CPA assessment back today, it was positive and as suspected only post qual experience was counted so that gives me only 17 months so not enough for any points. So finally I have submitted my EOI with 60 points for 189

:( and 65 for 190 NSW. Soooo a v long wait for me I'm sure, if any chance at all! Settling in for a long wait. Good luck to everyone else applying! Julia

  9. Hi Penny, Did you get the CPA assessment back through the post or by email?

Yeah it was a pretty efficient turnaround from them and they did both my skills and employment. I submitted the application to them on 23rd March, but was asked to resend the English certificate on 31st March for them. So they only received all the documentation necessary to start the assessment at that point.

Either way, the 10-15 working days timeline on their website seems pretty accurate from my experience, so hopefully you should here back from them fairly soon :)

  10. I haven't heard anything from them at all so hoping they have everything as I should have heard before now? I did IELTS so maybe that's the difference. Hurry up CPA!

I got an email yesterday morning from CPA asking for the log in for PTA. I am expecting to be waiting another 2 weeks. I am not in a desperate hurry, although don't want to miss out all together. The day I have to tell my parents is looming closer :-(
  11. Hahahaha I know! Its only going to get worse. Maybe I need some form on tranquiliser meds lol! Gotta laugh :) I'm preparing for a year wait for an invite, just want the EOI in

Just wait for the 'waiting for an invite wait' or the 'waiting for a case officer wait' or the 'waiting for a grant email wait'

    It's torture !!!

  12. I hope you are right! it is ten working days for me today and the wait is driving me mad!!! Praying I get it by Friday. I cant wait another weekend haha. This visa malarkey plays war with your nerves. And it doesn't help that i'm the least patient person in the world, hate things being out of my control :)

  13. No I don't either! I think you can study them by distance learning. How many CIMA exams have you got left to do?

I believe you can apply to one of the other accounting bodies with only part qual for your Skills assessment but it isn't guaranteed it would be positive. Its probably worth the money to give it a try? (It kind of depends how many other points you have, you need 70 really to get in fairly quickly and there is a huge backlog of 65 pointers to about October 15).

For the Skills Assessment you have to sit the IELTS or PTE academic test first (£160) then its about £250 for the Skills assessment. You just have to gather all of your certificates and results, Letters from each previous employer with breakdown of your duties and IELTS results then send them off by email.

  14. Hi Sarah,

I've been told and read on lots of posts that only post full qualification experience counts on CIMA, I am waiting for my Skills Assessment back from CPA to find out for sure! I applied on the 7th April so should be another week or so to receive it. I qualified Sept 2014 so wont score any points for experience (boo). If you have a Finance degree you can ask them to assess that instead? Julia

  15. I am still having dilemmas over which accounting class to ask for my assessment in. I am hoping to get my skills assessment application off in the next day or 2. Are there spaces left on the management accountant subclass? I was going to go for the general accounting one originally, but the management accounting one seems to fit my experience better. I am ICAEW qualified though. Is it just CIMA qualified people who go for this one?

    So confused!

Hi sns, I've just submitted my Skills Assessment to the CPA today. I chose them because of their MRA with CIMA so providing I am successful i'll also be able to apply for CPA membership. I know some migration agents advise people to go with ICAA for your skills assessment but im not sure why this is. I just looked at processing times and CPA seemed quicker and simpler to me. I applied under 221112 Management accountant, I don't think they split out the Accountant quota into the individual categories (but not sure). So now I have a 10 to 15 working days wait to see how many years experience I will end up with (if their website is accurate!).

Anyway good luck with whichever you choose! I see you are North East UK, where are you? I'm in Newcastle :)

  16. Thank you. I will look into getting the Advanced Diploma assessed as that is meant to the equivalent to a UK degree (QCF level 6), and the full CIMA equivalent to a UK Masters (QCF level 7) but I guess it just depends if this equates to the Australian system and rules.

I know there is a huge backlog of accountants, and I don't mind waiting a year or more, my only worry is if they remove accountants from the SOL in July. I have looked at 190 but we really want to go to Perth and it looks like only NSW if offering SS without a job offer condition and I just don't fancy Sydney. But I think I will apply for it anyway just to see how I go. Thanks again for your reply!

  17. They will take the dates from you getting your full CIMA qualification.

What is your degree in? If it is Finance/accounting related get your degree assessed and not CIMA, this is what I did to get around this as I left my log book for quite a while after finishing the exams.

Ah I don't have a degree, just an HND in Business and Finance. Poop! I think this might only leave me on 60 points then so no chance of getting an invite :( thanks for the advice
