I live on Lake Macquarie at Warners Bay after living In both Sydney and Melbourne so happy to answer questions! I work in the Newcastle community so visit most places... I too have two young children and love it here.... the lake, the ocean, the bush, not too far from Sydney or amazing places further north for camping trips. 

Melbourne was very similar to England in my opinion but it really depends on what lifestyle you wish for your family. We love the beach so are blessed here... it's a twenty minute drive to my work and love love the climate.

Melbourne was very cold and grey in winter! Here we are mid winter and sat in a t shirt taking in the beauty of the lake!

Hoping you may be able to advise.

My daughter was born here and I am now applying for her first passport for our upcoming holiday.

I believe I have to first apply for a certificate of citizenship for her (form 119) so ive printed that out.

1.Just wondered who may certify my documents as we have moved interstate and havent known anyone a year (one of the requirements on form)?

2. Only evidence of identity I have for her is her birth certificate and medicare card... she doesnt have any photo id obvs...

Should this be ok?

thanks for for your reply - its helpful and interesting to hear your experience. We lived in NZ for a while a few years ago so aware of the reality of missing family & friends. It is tough. It's good to know there are employment opportunities in Melbourne and it's fairly well paid too - makes the thought of moving easier so thanks very much. Have you found it to be a friendly place? Is it easy to fit in/make friends?

You're welcome. Cant really comment on it too much down here yet as weve only been here a month today, but the majority of people seem friendly and helpful.. which is great as on the coast i loved how friendly everyone was to us. Its certainly not an unfriendly place, people do seem to keep to themselves a bit more but as i say that may be a completely wrong judgement after such a short time. I havent made any friends yet but ive just joined the gym and health club so hopefully soon! Only down side for me so far has been the amount of rain! We are here for a year atleast and if we like it we will stay longer... so far my favourite spot has been Newcastle @Rallyman, and who knows the next job may take us there.. its good to hear there is work for skilled people as the debbie downers had told us work was really scarce. We literally flew down for a weekend aand found a rental too, and we have a fab house for the rent we pay. I think if you have time to find a great suburb Melbourne sounds like it has loads to offer. We are really far.out in the suburbs which it taking getting used to as we have always lived near the ocean, but its another experience and a great opportunity to save some money and do different things in the countryside which is very pretty.

I cant recommend Veronika at sortoutmyvisa.com enough. She has helped our family and two of our friends emigrate and its just her, so is very personable and frank. She replied within a day to any of my queries and made the process so much easier... worth every penny!

We are in Melbourne Suburbs, having moved from the Central Coast as my husband got a permanent positon here. The wages here for a skilled labourer are high, and we are comfortably living on one wage at the moment as we have a baby that I am staying at home to look after. My husband works in pre cast concrete but he has carpenters working with him as labourers and they are earning really good money, with hours Mon to Fri. We were really worried about finding work when we moved out here in jan but we have been lucky and never been short.. he joined agencies initially and then got offered this permanent contract. We have had such a rollercoaster since deciding to emigrate over three years ago, but we have been here ten months now and overall we love it for so many reasons. Being away from family i would say is the hardest thing and no one can prepare you for the reality of that.. it is tough. Everyones experiences are different and i am happy to answer any specific questions you have. The weather very similar to English summer here so far although we have only been in melbourne a month, very different climate to other parts of Oz. You will find lots of positives and negatives on here, opinions and realities. I have always found this site so helpful though, sometimes you have to sift through the two.. but everyone will help you as we have all been through it!

On a completely random note do you know where you can buy the best fruit and veg that isnt coles/ woolies? :-)

Thank you! We have a house in Cranbourne East now- the Mayfield estate and its still being built but weve got a great spot to find our where we want to be as he is working in Pakenham. Id love to be somewhere near the countryside so we will see, finding a kindy for my son provi ng the challenge at the mo. Ive enrolled him at a great little place for now, all the ones we visited were soooo busy so ive found him somewhere with a smaller class size but still looking.. purely because i would like somewhere where there are other children his age not going to school this coming year as i keeping him back to start the year after... i seem to be in the minority so far as all the other children starting next year. Hi there, we returned from a working holiday visa 1 year ago and we are wanting to move to Australia permanently. My partner is a chef and worked in Oz for the year as a chef in 2 amazing companies. We are wanting to have our first child before we go so will only be a baby before we go. I am wondering how easy it will be to move there with a young baby with him being a chef and me being a receptionist in a hospital. Thank you for your help in advance

Hi! Congratulations if you are pregnant already, apologies that abit unclear.. adding the baby to the visa relatively simple especially if you are using an agent. You can still get your SMP in Australia as well as a buffer so that would be something to think about, thats what i did and migrated 6 months pregnant. Moving with a young baby is hard! But in some ways easier in the long term as it gets you out to meet people and keeps you busy and focussed. Its more the financial side and practicalities but if you are a strong team you will work it out. You also have a year to validate your visas after grant so you will have options. I found having a baby here a wonderful experience as everyone has been so supportive and the hospitals were brilliant. We wanted to have our second baby and our visas came first so we thought lets just go for it. Although having your family around with a newborn can be a great help that is something serious to consider. Doing it on your own is exhausting... but never a dull momeent! Im so tired this morning the coles man delivered 12kg of apples to my door that i must have ordered doing the online shop at 3am!!!

Id like to know what sort of price mark people pay for agent services ?

 

I was quoted 1800 today for our application, which I think is absurd if I'm honest, the whole process is expensive enough without a fee like that IMO.

 

 

That sounds about right to me... ours was just around 2000 paid in installments.... worth every penny if they know their stuff and it's a stressful enough process as it is.

For community and walk to everything then there is only the towns on the westernport side of the Peninsula. In Somerville we can walk to everything and have four supermarkets, Target, Reject all the staples plus lots of doctors schools etc all can be walked to. Also have the train. Tyabb is a nice little area and has a two primary schools. Tyabb Rail you could walk to. The kindergarten is walkable as well. As our the sports grounds. Hastings, good areas and bad, reasonable and depending where you pick can walk to everything. Train line goes through all these small towns. The reason they are so good is that the council realised a while ago that over development such as happened in Mornington and Mount Martha is not good and changed the planning to circle the towns with larger land sizes to keep them contained. Bittern is nice and has the train line as well. Of course it comes at a cost, when a house goes up for sale its gone in a weekend. There are rentals but they also disappear very quickly. On another plus for us at Somerville we have access to the Peninsula Link freeway which is about five minutes from the town. This has forced up property prices. I have had an agent ring me twice in the last weeks was I interested in selling, no. Why would I. Never get what we have here back.

 

Langwarrin is ok but its not as accessible. Frankston up the hill is fine and once again any house that comes on the market that is a reasonable price or renovation project goes straight away. I know this because my friends and found that whilst thinking about it the house sold. In the end they had to give their name to an agent in Carrum Downs who contacted them when a house came on the market and was not yet advertised and they were able to secure a purchase.

 

These areas used to get a bad wrap but the secret was that us locals knew they were hot property and unfortunately for us we are discovered. Beaches all around us.

Petals do you know much about Clyde? Only that it keeps popping up in my searches. And only a 20 min commute for my husband. Somerville and frankston look fab but the commute saying 40 mins, one of the resons we moving is for the shorter commute as he currently doing an hr and ten mins each way atlease.. but i know we will have to compromise to get all the things we are looking for. I definately am over this moving malarkey so im going to try my best to get it right. Any recommendations on a holiday rental spot to base ourselves until we secure a rental? Thats the way we are going to do it... pack up here and drive down to find a place where our things can follow. Really appreciate any opinions

Thays helpful thank you @Buzzybee thank you yes I know its not in Melbourne I like the look of the Gippsland but its tricky without actually goi ng there.. so its really helpful to have some names of places to research and arrange viewings for our visit. The older areas with shops you mention are there any you would recommend for me to add to my list? We love the beach although im well aware we will be compromising in this move, but maybe places in between frankston/pakenham area sounds like something to consider. I appreciate your comments thank you

I am hoping you will be able to help me with my research!

I am currently on the Central coast with a young family (4yr old and 4 month old), and my husband has a new job nr Pakenham starting at the end of October.

So i am wondering if you may advise.....

1. What suburbs to recommend to look for rentals and which to avoid in your experiences... and

2. What the areas are like to live in as im a little nervous after just getting relatively settled in here! and if any mums have any info that might help us find our feet again!

There doesnt ever seem to be a shortage of those! Mine was in reply to asking my views a year on. There are plenty of negative bits but i left them because you have to celebrate the positives and make your lemonade... I do think if you decide to go for it you have to be 100 per cent aware that it is going to be a huge challenge and a strain on every part of you and it has been the upbeat posts sometimes that have got me through!

Wow its strange rereading what i wrote and thinking about what has happened since...Only last night my husband and i were saying we cant believe we pulled it off!

I really am still in the go for it camp but obviously everyones case is different and theres lots of pros and cons and thats what you will find on here- everyone has had their own experience. We moved over when I was 27 weeks pregnant and I now have a ten week old! Im sat in my car feeding her just about to go for a walk on the beach as my son in kindy- which he loves! I personally hate being cold and couldnt stand English winters... its 14 degrees here today and im in my flip flops mid winter!

We both left really good jobs to come out here with not a huge amount of money behind us... a huge gamble and so much stress and worry. I did an awful lot of soul searching and praying that we would be ok and we are just now feeling like we are home as there is no way i would want to come back. It was tough for my husband to find a job but if you are a hard worker you will go far here and his pay was increased three times in two weeks.. he has gone from being a foreman to working as a skilled labourer for an agency but still earns more than he did in the uk. We are on the central coast and he commutes into Sydney at the moment.. but we have amazing weekends together and are always off outside... when it does rain i actually love the excuse to stay in and be cosy!

I could write for ages but i think you really need to go with your gut feeling and believe in yourselves.. but its not easy and will take a lot of hard work, but practical advice always available on here and i found everyone so helpful. If you have any specific questions i will of course help.. we dont have anyone here either but i have already made friends and i have found most people to be so so friendly and helpful and laid back and it really is infectious. Theres negative bits, but the positives for me far outweigh those. My four year old keeps asking me to check we are staying here as he loves it so much. He has a fantastic kindy, then does swimming (with hot showers!) and a sports club on other days and has made lots of friends, all the mums make an effort to chat to me and made us feel so welcome.

On a practical note i would recommend a migration agentbthat knows their stuff as it is such a complicated process, mine was wonderful if you need a contact. They areenpaid to do the worrying for you... i cant believe how stressed i got myself and if thats one thing i could tell myself a year ago..I it would be to just make the most of experience as a good migration agent wont take you on unless they are confident you will be successful.

I skype a lot and my mum has visited already and gone off for a bit before coming back for august. I am concentrating on our little family now. It was so hard leaving family and friends but i always knew i was doing it for my childrens future and my son is so happy here.. as are we all. Its of coursedifficult with no family help but i managed to give birth out here and move house and have a sick baby all at the same time and we did it!! Have to go now as baby getting fed up. Keep us updated! X
