  1. Biggera Waters, Runaway Bay, Paradise Point and Hope Island are probably all worth a look. None of those suburbs would give a massive commute to the hyperdome.

Thanks!!! I've had a quick look at them. The houses seem a bit smaller but pricier. What's your thoughts on Robina, Arundel, Carrara etc? Too rough/ far away? X

  2. Hi!

Myself, hubby and nearly 4 year old son are thinking (pretty sure) we are going to move closer to the beach in the Gold Coast in February when our lease runs out. We live in Manly, Brisbane at the moment and love it. It's on the water but not 'proper beaches' and there are quite a few restaurants/ bars around but not a loud area.

My husband works in the Logan Hyperdome so not as far as Brisbane. Basically I'm looking for advice on safe suburbs that are quiet but not too isolated as near as possible to the sea that he can commute to in a reasonable time (no more than 45 minutes). We've already looked at Helensvale etc but still a bit far to the beach still if we are going to be leaving friends we've made in the last year.

    Hope you can help!!!

    Thanks, nish

  3. Hi! Glad you like it there. We're coming next week and Tina's hubby has already been advertising the bench to me so I'm in! Haha. We'll Definately arrange a meet up there when we arrive. Always up for a drink.

Devestating about hearing of how cold it is to welcome me! I'm having a BBQ here today in sunny cardiff haha.

  4. Hi guys, late on the reply but just wanted to say hi! I'm moving from Cardiff to south of brisbane. I'm 29 and he's 34. We have a 2 and a half years old boy. My hubby has a job in logan so looking near to that area but not logan itself. Got my eye on cleveland and areas by there. Have quite a big social group in Cardiff so trying to get to know peeps before I get there. How are you all settling in now?

    Thanks

  5. Hi guys. Sorry about the late reply... took a last minute last girls holiday! Was lovely and good prep for the sun!!

So I've never heard of these areas before so will research. Thank you!!! Where are they roughly? Still waiting on our visa sadly but looks like we'll be coming late july. Nice to hear from so many of you Welsh... never knew there were so many welsh people too. Inbox me to let me know where your from and more about yourselves if you can/ want. Lovely to get to know you all as unlike a lot of the forums I've seen YOU'RE ALL LOVELY! x

  6. Thank you all so much. Lots of good advice. It's hard to get a happy medium with house size and an area where there's things to do.

Gbye grey sky - fab timing. Maybe the same plane! Haha .Give me a private message and we can update eachother / give help to each other. Would be nice to hear from a newbie!

Vandeux- first time I've seen a fellow Welsh person on this forum! My cousins are from Ponty! What's wellington point like? Pretty/ much to do? Again, give us a private message if you want to. Would be nice to keep in touch (have someone to watch the ruggers with) haha.

  7. Hi! My husband has got a job as a GP in logan so moving from Cardiff, Wales. Waiting for visa at the moment. Hoping we'll get there mid/end of July. I've been researching for ages about where to possibly rent (short term when we get there then longer term). We've sold our house but don't want to buy straight away. So, basically any ideas about areas nice to the south part of brisbane would be much appreciated! Don't fancy Logan itself from what I've seen / heard. He wants a maximum of 30 mins commute if possible. We have a 2 1/2 yo boy and I'm looking to meet as many people as possible so don't fancy the sticks. Would love an area that's easy to meet people, reasonably big houses, where we can go shopping, nusery, walk to restaurants/bars. I play netball here (recreational- not hardcore) and would like to join a league of some sort there. So far I've been looking at cleveland area Redland bay (seems too far from the city), bulimba, hawthorne, carindale. Particularly like the houses around cleveland. Any thoughts about areas and short term accom? And when we move, how do you recommend we get going meeting people. Long question! Sorry!! ☺

  8. Hi

Generally in most situations temporary residents do not have to declare worldwide income only Australian sourced income, therefore this may not be an issue for you https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/International-tax-for-individuals/In-detail/Foreign-income-of-Australian-residents/Foreign-income-exemption-for-temporary-residents---introduction/

Thankyou that's useful to know and gives us some breathing space. However the plan is to get permanent residency ASAP after arriving possibly in the firsf year so it will be an issue eventually.

  9. sorry Cross-posted with the sponsored forum.

    Hi

My 2.5 year old son has approx £1.7k in a Junior ISA. In a few months we will be going over on a 457 visa (becoming permanently resident in Oz for tax purposes) and I understand that we can't withdraw from it, but also from then we will be limited with what we can do with those funds. I also gather that investments in a child's name can be taxed very punitively in Oz!

Are there any things we should do with the JISA before we move out to prepare things - also can anyone recommend a tax planner in Oz (we will live in Brisbane but happy to do business remotely) with expertise in UK investments for this sort of situation?

  11. You don't have to be living "the good life"to not be living in or near a city.I used to live 45 mins drive from a city in Oz,but you'd think you were in the middle of nowhere!lol what I'm trying to say is,don't dismiss area's that you might think are too way out, because where I lived (Small country town, pop 1,500)we enjoyed a great lifestyle, but were close enough (we actually disliked going to the big smoke)to drive down into the burbs and city if we needed it.We were also not that far from beaches either. We had two doctors in town, both who we knew by first names (they insisted everyone call them by their first names)and they loved living in that town! Our town had a good sports scene, the town hall was the cinema as well as an indoor market, two pubs which were great, and so on.We very rarely felt the need to visit the city or burbs.

Rents/houses are also cheaper which is a bonus.Better community feel, your kids (as you do)know everyone,I could go on hon but please also consider country area's,that are say an hours drive from Brisbane.I can't recommend any because I came from SA.

    Thanks melza!x

  12. Hi peeps!

My husband, child (2years old) and I are wanting to move to Oz. My husband is a GP so I'm pretty sure there aren't many jobs in City centres for UK qualified GPs. Now the problem we have is that I' 'reasonably young' (28) and he's 33. He's quite happy doing whatever and doesn't mind a quiet life. While I no longer want to be clubbing until 4am, I still enjoy lively pubs/ bars, restaunts when can get childcare, socialising/ meeting new people, shopping and general stuff that I have easy access to where I live (near Cardiff City Centre). I have recently started in a local netball league (which I am awful at but enjoy to game and socialising with them). I'm definately not a massive City girl as not fussed on London, but also definately not ready for 'the good life'. I've been to Brisbane and loved it. I have been to other parts of Australia too but that was my fave. Thinking Perth a bit far from anything and friends less likely to visit in they happen to be in Oz, as most go o East Coast.

Obviously schools will be important as well as childcare before LO starts school. I like the beach so easy'ish access would be great and am moving for some sunshine (don't fancy the places with cold seasons).

I am open to considering other places too.

    HELPPPPP!!!!

    xx
