  1. I teach in Qld and a friend of mine has just registered in NSW.... it’s a long process! She had to send all her paperwork in, and then wait for a call for an interview. They require you to have an interview before you can teach or relieve in NSW. So trying to get your paperwork up and ready to go when you arrive is definitely a good idea. Then you will just have to wait for your interview. TFN... another waiting process unfortunately. Hopefully you’ll be up and running soon.

  2. Hey Manner 1983,

it varies with what you've been offered... Kind of take what you can get here in queensland  I currently teach 2 year 3 classes and a year 1 class. It's only this way in Queensland, every other state to my knowledge you can apply for jobs as they are advertised. Permanent is very rare unles you have been cobttractingn to a school for a period of time whereby they can then state they need you, then it may turn into permanency. The curriculum here is very different for me coming from Nz. Not sure what it's like from uk though. Get registered with Tracer when you get here, they are the government based relief agency then contracts come from there 

Apologies for my terrible English ( being a teacher) writing from my phone... Too small to see!

  3. Thanks jbar399...out of interest, what age do you teach or does it vary with each placement?

I must admit the whole state/catholic/private school differentiation is quite interesting in Oz...very different from the UK ('private school' in Oz seems to have very different connotations to ‘private school’ in the UK).

Also, the predilection of schools to opt for shorter-term, rolling one-year contracts rather than long term permanent positions. My wife and I have been trying to get our heads around this distinction as we think it will require quite an adjustment mentality wise.

Long term job security is always going to be a concern…newly arrived migrant or not!

Teaching in the UK is often seen as a job for life…i.e. very hard for the school to oust you once your feet are under the table…but that’s a debate for another thread on another forum!

  4. Cracking thread, did take me a while to read through it all from the start!

Just wanted to know if there are many folks on here teaching in QLD, namely primary school? Would be interested to find out a rough temperature check of the job market. Also, how many kids do get enrolled for the Preparatory Year - given it's not compulsory?

This and Years 1 & 2 are the years my wife has the most amount of experience and therefore will be aiming her job hunt at.

My wife and I are hoping to be heading over around this time next year (just finishing up 189 application now). Will probably be based out of Brisbane, Windaroo in fact, where my brother lives.

    Hey!

Regards to teaching in QLD, i moved over here from NZ end of last year. It is really different here to most other places in regard to employment. You can't just apply for job vacancies as they are not advertised (only private schools) because it is all government based. The government have to interview you, give you a rating then they will offer you a permanent position somewhere where teachers are urgency needed - Regional or Far north Queensland. There is however a lot of Relief work available here. I have currently got 3 job share contracts and relieve the one day in-between. As far as permanency goes in state schools, it is a tricky now, but contract and relief if pretty good here- and pays well. :-)
