As others say, yes you do need Oz car seats. We brought our UK ones over in the hope we'd be able to use the UK ones for our two older children (who were 7 and 8 years at the time). We were told that, while legally they didn't have to be in a car seat at all, it would be illegal to put them in a UK car seat. The police told me that in reality they were unlikely to be a problem and acknowledged the ridiculousness of this (at least for my two older children). However, if something happened, I imagine you'd be in trouble unfortunately. Was incredibly annoyed especially as the supposedly safer ones we've bought since moving to Oz seem nowhere as good or secure feeling as our old UK ones! On a practical note Target and Big W sell a wide range of seats.

Thank you FKS. That's very helpful. My kids are 7 and 4. I agree with you about the ridiculousness as the car seats we have in UK are rated one of the safest from safety point of view. But I guess there's nothing much we can do about it. Don't want to take any risk in new country so better to just buy from there.

2. Thank you for your replies. I have gone through this website in detail and can see that overseas car seats would be illegal in Australia. So my next question is can you suggest some stores to buy car seats on the day of arrival as we would need it straight away. We are going to Melbourne.

3. Hi,

We have 4 child seats - some with isofix and some without. One has got strap at the back which goes behind the seat and clips onto the anchor. I have read somewhere that Overseas seats are illegal in Australia. Is that true? I am exporting my car so can take the car seats in them. Is there any point in taking them or will I have to buy new anyway?

4. Hi pm79 congrats! Did you get a direct grant? Or any CO contact?
What documents did you front load with your visa application?
Thank you@RavenBlue. It was a direct grant. No contact from CO. I didn't use any migration agent also. Had my medicals in Feb. Uploaded all documents showing evidence of my experience, applied for police check after submission. Also uploaded form 80.

I've also been waiting since Feb 2017, visa status is "Assessment in progress". Hope we all get some good news soon, I've been waiting for so long now !

Is that when you started the process or when you lodged 457 application? When did your employer apply for nomination?

If you look on the threads for 457 visas, there are many people waiting 6 months plus. Add on the time it takes for approval if they haven't sponsored previously and there is every chance that your 189 will come through first. The problem if you applied for a 457 and it came through after the 189, it would cancel the 189

Yes that is one of my worries but I can always withdraw the 457 as soon as I get my 189. Isn't it? My employer has sponsored in past. That was my query. What does TRN number signify? He is saying that he should be getting this in a day or two. SO where does it put me in time line for 457.

If i was a GP i certainly wouldnt be moving on a temp visa unless you are planning on only being here a few years anyway. The 189 will take longer to process but means once here you have much more security and freedom and more than anything are not tied to one employer.

Cal x

Thank you Cal. As I mentioned I have already applied for 189 but since it's taking a long time I was thinking of applying for 457 as well so that I can go there quicker. Obviously it is entirely possible that my 189 visa might come soon after my 457 application in which case I will be withdrawing my 457. I understand about the freedom with 189 but I am not too worried about it at the moment as I won't be changing job soon anyway and by then my 189 would (hopefully) come. My other friends had their 189 visa in 3 months but that was before the rule changes.

9. Hi all,

I applied for 189 on 8th June with 80 points. When I lodged my application -I was eligible for 457 as well and processing times were same for both at that time (75%  processed in 4 months & 90% in 6 months). But as you all may be aware now 457 processing time has gone down to 2 months for 75% applications whereas 189 has become 8 months for 75% and 11 months for 90%. So now I am thinking of applying for 457 as well. My employer has had change in his management (a new director added). He states that he has applied for a new TRN number which should come anytime now. My agent states that we can't apply for 457 till my employer gets his TRN number.

I have already got my medical and police check done. I have been looking at some of the timelines posted in this forum and people have mentioned 'sponsorship lodged', 'sponsor approved', nomination lodged etc. I would like to know where does getting a TRN number stand in all these? My other question is that is it really worth applying for 457 now? I know it is difficult question to answer and it depends on lot of factors. But I just want to know what other people think about it. I really want to move to Australia asap. My occupation is GP.

12. Hi pm79 it's hard because what I don't like others may think is a lovely area. One area I showed a family around 8 years ago, I wouldn't live there if you paid me but they absolutely loved it. They asked my opinion, noted my response, moved there and settled in really well. I don't mean to sound snobbish as I'm far from it but I suppose it's what you are use to and where you come from. If you lived in the roughest estate in the UK then it would probably be paradise.
The ones I wouldn't personally live in are
Doveton (not if you gave me a free house)
Dandenong (although there are some nice areas around)
Springvale (even though we have rellies there)
Frankston North
Scumshine (Sorry Sunshine)

What I will say is don't look at avoiding the suburbs with the highest crime rates, these results are always wrong, basically because if there is a brand new estate going in to an area a lot of the thiefs travel to steal building materials. Also thieves don't usually strike in their own back yard, it's usually the more affluent suburbs that get hit.

@thepomqueen thank you very much for your reply. We are thinking of sending our kids to overnewton anglican school keilor campus. Hence thinking of renting in Keilor, keilor east, keilor downs or taylors hill. How do you feel about these areas considering they are pretty close to sunshine and st Albans.
