  1. You will find it impossible to get a rental property before you move as they will insist that you see the property first. Rental properties are usually let by having a half hour open viewing on a Saturday, then people put bids in and the estate agent and landlord agree who to let to. It's not a quick process and minimum rentals tend to be for 6 months, not 3 months. If you are looking for self-contained living for 3 months you will be looking for holiday lets and trying to strike a deal with them for longer term occupancy.

I have lived in Sydney all my life and I rent. I can only give you my own experience. Minimum rentals are 12 months. Typically when the 12 month period ends, by agreement with the landlord you can continue on a month-to-month ongoing basis (I have been doing this for 3 years where I am now and have had only 2 rental increases which have been pretty reasonable in my opinion).

Open viewings can be arranged for any time. Traditionally they are on a Saturday but for shares it will be when it's convenient for those living in the property (weekends or after work).

I have heard of rent bidding. Have never experienced it myself and would avoid like the plague any estate agent/property that's asking for it.

Quinkla is correct in that you should be here when looking for property whether it's alone or share - for practical reasons on both sides I should imagine.

  2. You know I always sigh when people say they are going because they're afraid they'll regret if they don't......what about regretting if you do?

But then I have to think about my own recent post where I said...

'Without migrating I do not think we would have achieved the peace and happiness with life that we now have, I have learnt what matters and I have learnt to have gratitude for what I have'

So although our journey to Australia and back wasn't something I would want to go through again, I don't regret it and my life is enriched as a result.

I will never do anything again that I'm unsure of because I think 'it's better to regret something you did than something you didn't do' (which I quoted a lot when we were moving out!) now I live by 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' but I had to go on the journey to learn that.

Nice perspective, Lady R. Sometimes you need to do things and go places to find out it's actually not for you.

Sorry it didn't work out for you but it looks like you're in a better place for the experience regardless.

  3. Hello again all.

i thought you might like an update since I started this thread. :)

We took on board everyone's comments and advice and "drum roll" we've decided to do it!

I know it'll be hard, we'll fight, I'll win ;) but the bottom line for us has always been "if we don't do it and years later regret it..."

Not sure where we're going yet (Perths off the menu now) but wherever we end up, I'm sure it'll be the right choice.

As as for the spiders, I've never met a spider who has won a scrap against my wedge shoe ;)

I'll be back asking more questions and begging for help I'm sure at some point :)

but thanks again to everyone :) Means a lot to us :)

    sarah + Wayne xx :)

Good for you! There's no substitute for giving it a shot. Hope everything works out well for you.

  4. Hi There,

We (the hubby and I) have joined this forum as we are looking to move to Oz with the 3 kids - 2 x teens and one 6 year old - and the dog. We hope to be granted a permanent visa to settle in the Brisbane area.

The process is soooooo complicated though! I am in the middle of sorting out my nurses registration and skills assessment and have my IELTS test in 2 weeks, so the ball is rolling!

I have already found the information on this forum incredibly helpful and as we have opted not to employ an agency we will need all the help we can find!

    Keep posting!

:ssign18: Danka! Good luck with everything - hope you all get here!

  5. Hey everyone! Thought I would say hello!

Moved to Tassie 4 years ago and am now between Hobart and Melbourne looking for employment over in Melbourne.

32 years old male, haven't met too many fellow English people over in Hobart and unfortunately am now starting to get a bit homesick.

    Hey DD. Welcome.

I understand employment's a bit tough in Tassie of late. Melbourne sounds like a good plan. As does hanging around this place. Loads of great people - that homesickness will be gone in no time for you I hope!

  6. Hi just thought I would say hello although I feel like I know most of you already, just need a little advise/help how do I block that Movingtotazmainia, only joking she is the apple of my eye really  I am just waiting to sell the house and then we are of to the land of OZ.

Don't bother with the block, FD - you will be found!

  7. I don't really understand all of these kinds of "blanket statement" posts.

    Nowhere is perfect.

Nowhere is everyone exactly the same - good or bad.

You enjoy the good stuff about a place or people and you navigate the rest as you can.

I'm Australian. I don't think I'm particularly rude and arrogant but yeah, I have my days where I can let rip.

I love living here and I love the UK as well which why I'll probably be ping-ponging it for the time being.

Do I love everything about both places and the people in both places? No. Is there a lot I love about both? Yes.

See again my living plan: You enjoy the good stuff about a place or people and you navigate the rest as you can.

    Peace out.

  8. Just saying hello to everyone.

Hoping to move to Oz where our daughter and family live. Two gorgeous little grandchildren to spoil :-)

Have applied for the Contributory Parent Visa 143 a month or so ago and can't wait to get out there

    Hi Maisie

Welcome to a great board. Hope your app works out for you and you get to enjoy some time here with your family.

  9. Hi everyone, I have been meaning to say hi on this forum for ages but always forget and charge straight in there on my threads wanting advice! ;)

I've only started posting on this site but have been snooping for ages! Spent 2 years in oz and now desperate to get back out there soon with my partner and little nipper, and always feel inspired by people's stories on here.

Had lots of great tips and advice already from folk on this site which is much appreciated! :cute:

Hi Kymmbo - well I'm slack as!

I think I've been around for 2 months or so and did I ever come in here and say Hi? 'course not

Loads of great people here, eh?

Nice to meet you - better get going and say hello to others as well!

  10. I always remember years ago, reading in the paper about this really superstitious man who every time he went on Friday 13th, something bad would happen to him, such as he got knocked by a car and broke his leg, got mugged, got involved in an armed robbery whilst queuing in the bank etc., etc. So he decided to stay home and stay in bed and there was some freak weather and the roof apparently fell on him and he died. Thems the breaks......

oh god, that is just terrible!

  11. Hi Blobby - even though I'm Australian and live here currently, I can really relate to what you say. Due to a chronic illness that has prevented travel for the last 8 years (thankfully resolved) I often feel the way you do which is then followed by a move.

I have lived here and in the UK on and off for 20 years. My lifestyle here is better but I feel more "connected" in the UK. I wish I could explain why that is but I can't. I'm never really happy in Oz. Even though I feel more "at home" in the UK, I then get strangely homesick and I'm back in Oz again!!! The fact I'm not married or have children or pets makes the ping-ponging even easier to do.

I'm sure none of that is any real help to you but as someone else has already mentioned, perhaps it will make you feel a little less like there might be something wrong with how you're feeling if you know you aren't the only one.

In fact, Northshorepom has some excellent ideas worth exploring - I think I might explore them myself.

  12. Tilly, I have moved back to the UK a number of times over the years sometimes I stayed for 6 months, sometimes a couple of years and often with not a lot of cash. Enough to find a roof over my head for a couple of months and I generally found work (temp) quickly.

Having said that, that was more than 10 years ago and I think a lot has changed. I plan on going back again in 12-18 months' time but this time I'll be going with a sizeable chunk of savings as I just have a feeling things won't be as easy as they had been for me previously.

I also don't have family over there now so I think a bit of extra planning is in order.
