Hi,

I was told that the NSW NBMA board will be having a meeting on November and they will send mail to the applicants who are waiting for AHPRA registration within three weeks after the meeting.

It's already mid-December.

Has anyone heard from them? I have not.

I submitted my application on March, and additional documents were requested which were submitted by April. I still have not heard from AHPRA yet until now. It's been almost 7 months. Is it really taking this long for anyone else?

just wondered why are you considering the bridging course if you have a degree?? I think that is just for diploma qualified nurses. You can apply to aphra when you have your nmc pin

They might also require bridging course to degree-holders without experience. Or those with degree + experience but do not come from US/UK/Canada. For example, Philippine nurses who are all degree-holders are required to take 3-months, 1-yr or 2-yr uni course depending on the institution attended, experience, and IELTS scores. Those with experience, accredited school, and IELTS >/7 in all areas are usually asked to take the 3-month bridging course.

I would like to ask if anyone has had an experience undergoing Bridging Course for Nurses. Do the schools have regular intake, like the regular schoolyear, or is it continuous throughout the year?

I would like to ask how long it takes for AHPRA to assess qualification? I sent mine March 2014. So far, I was asked to provide two additional documents, which I have already forwarded to them last month.

Aside from bedside nursing, what are the other career paths one might pursue as a nurse in Australia?

She took the bridging course, and registered with AHPRA. I don't know why she couldn't get a job, but she said she knows a lot of other nurses who have no jobs and waiting for agencies to give them duties.

I really hope she is wrong.

I met a nurse from Poland last week. She has been here in Melbourne for three years, and is working as a phlebotomist in a laboratory. She says she couldn't get a job as a nurse that's why she's stuck doing that.

Are there NPs or Nurse Practitioners in Australia, like in the US?

How much is the salary? And how to be one?

Any idea how to find odd jobbs here in Melbourne?

I have applied to numerous postings on Seek, no callback. At this point, I am open to jobs in retail, reception, etc. It seems everything needs a certificate, but I still want to try my luck. I am waiting for my assessment from AHPRA but based on forum posts it might come at least six months from now.

And how can an RN be one?

Oh I would also like to mention that the headhunter said they were very excited the moment they talked to him, because they knew they would not have a problem placing him because aside from his resume (which they had to edit because they said it was CTO-level, and not senior java programmer which was what he was applying for, and he would not want to seem overqualified for the job because employers do not want that) he has perfect English. So I guess lack of language fluency (grammar, or maybe even clarity/accent, I am not sure) seems to be another barrier against getting a job. He was lucky he spoke the language growing up at home (noone in his family spoke our language at home) and we spoke it throughout school, but those who didn't could still do things to improve, as it seems to be a major consideration.

Luck = chance + preparedness. Prepare your butt off now, so when the chance

comes, you have everything you need to dazzle them. :-)

Before we arrived we were very anxious, given the job market here. And like I said, we did not have a lot of funds. But just persevere because despite the not-so-ideal job market in Australia nowadays, they sure recognize talent when they see it. Best of luck

My husband got a job on our first week in Melbourne. It was very fast for him - luckily, because we did not have so much funds, coming from a third world country. The day he changed his location to Melbourne in Linkedin, it was a Wednesday, he was contacted by a headhunter. He was asked to take an online java test (he got a 99% - he was even chatting with the owner of the house we are staying at and playing with the cat!!), then scheduled for interview with two clients on Friday afternoon and Monday morning. As an afterthought it seemed, headhunter invited him to visit their office the next day, probably to see if he looked presentable (Thursday morning).

Monday lunchtime, headhunter told him both offered him a job.

He just finished his second week at work. So yeah, we were very lucky. We are very grateful.

I have just discovered this forum through Google. And if I may ask, why do UK nurses want to migrate to Oz?

Oh, for background, I am from a third world country, so UK is pretty much high up there in terms of dream migration destinations for nurses where I came from.
