Interpol does hold an accessible list of stolen passports, but certain countries border agencies have chosen not to use it.

A stolen passport check is carried out on all passengers departing Australia on international flights.

But no one has claimed responsibility...and there's no point in committing an act of terrorism unless you draw attention to your grievances. The propaganda aspect is the most important to terrorists.

 

They know that the Chinese know who they are. No one claimed responsibility for the attack in Tiananmen Square last October that killed five people and injured scores more or the the stabbing massacre last week.

Its a difference I have noticed in both Australia and New Zealand, and its a good one, everywhere I go everyone's passport is checked regardless of nationality. The difference is in my experience, the UK will check it when you leave but inbound especially if you are arriving from a European country, they dont. Yes the UK is part of Europe but I just find that wrong.

For the record I wasnt speculating on this particular accident. I leave that to the experts.

Hi Fifi, forgetting this particular accident for a second, I dont think any self repecting terrorist these days would be using passports of different nationalities, especially if they were stolen a year ago. They are far more sophisticated than that. Someone knowing he can sell it on to someone who has to, or needs to leave the country in a hurry maybe, but not terrorists.

I still find Heathrow most unsecure when it comes to checks. Every time I land at Sydney everyone's passport is checked. The number of times at Heathrow i with many others have been waved through is ridiculous. I even complained once. No wonder the UK has an illegal immigrant problem lol.

Yes you're right, when I first found Pprune many years ago it was basically for who it was designed, aviation professionals. However, now it is mostly populated by Microsoft Flight Sim experts and other assorted w@nkers which is why so many of us old hands no longer frequent said forum.

Fully agree Les. The military forum can still be funny on occasions, but some take bitter and twisted to a whole new level. The walts generally "out" themselves very early on that forum.

PPrune is now unfortunately over run with "experts" who have to stop playing FSX just long enough to point out the cause of the latest accident or post the weather or flight track info for the umpteenth time. They are close to 40 pages of drivel on this accident already, and having just looked are banging on about etickets and terrorists boarding aircraft with passports that were stolen to order. The Asiana thread is close to the size of a large novel.

The Chinese certainly have the kit to find any wreckage, but sadly politics will no doubt come into play and they won't be allowed in to look. That area is also festooned with fishing boats so there is hope it will be found quickly.

Both the 777 and Malaysian Airlines have had excellent safety records. Since entering service in 1995 there has only been one other hull loss involving a 777 with fatalities and that was pilot error not the aircraft. Sad knews indeed. RIP.

That's not the advice I was given by DIAC in Canberra. I was told when granted my Bridging Visa A that if I needed to travel I would need to apply onshore for a bridging visa B, and that it would be granted only in exceptional circumstances, and that I would need to give "compelling and compassionate reason's." to support it.

Most bridging visa's do not allow you to travel and if you leave Australia the visa cancels and you won't be able to get back in. I was on an A whilst awaiting a parner visa decision and that had a no travel restriction. You can travel on a Bridging visa B but you have to be on another bridging visa type to apply for it. I believe its designed for compassionate travel, dont know about going on holiday.

Or the lets change lanes after stopping at the lights just to even it up brigade. Still scares the bejesus out of me when they do that. Roundabout etiquette seems to be, I can overtake him here lol.

Also load your documents in batches to save you and them confusion, IE get all your ID stuff sorted and upload it in one go. I know someone that works in DIAC and he is forever moaning that he will get a bank statement one day then the following day another one along with another piece of ID, etc etc.

No I never signed, but mine was a replacement. I got mine through the government gateway website, It links it I believe to your passport signature, if you have one of the new fangled electronic ones. Have a look at:

LOL Abl, it drove me nuts at first, Yamba Drive is bad for the right hand lane hogger, or going slower than the left lane. There are signs around that say keep left but as a former user of the M25 im not going to complain about Canberra's roads, at least you move on them

Medical and police checks are only valid for 12 months. I dont know the processing time for a sponser visa but given a partner 820 visa takes up to 13 months to process I waited until i was asked to provide them. To be fair once they were back I had my Visa a week later, maybe I should have provided them earlier.

Yes, lost mine and they would only send the replacement to a UK address. Same with a bank card I needed renewing, Barclays would not send it to Oz. Don't know if all banks are the same.

If I may IHMO the OP has called it just about right. I have been here just over two years and I have to say off the bat I love the place and have from day one, yes it has its own peculiarities but where doesn't? Compared to the UK in general things are more expensive., cars certainly are but there again they last longer out here and therefore hold there second hand value for longer. I live South side and agree the locals do like to play on the North South divide but ive never seen any real evidence of it. I will say ive found everyone ive met in the ACT to be freindly, very welcoming and helpful. I have made some very good freinds since my arrival. Jobs wise? The Government is out as stated above, and I have to agree a lot of jobs seem to be through word of mouth. If you are in on a bridging visa awaiting a decision on a partner visa for example even if you can work, a lot of employers will shy away from you. I got lucky with my bridging visa and got work at the airport, but only because I met my future boss over a beer one night and was able to fully explain my situation. I know of many bosses though who see the words Bridging Visa and the application is binned immediately. The only real gripe I have about the ACT is the right hand lane hoggers on the highways, they seriously will head for the right hand lane and sit there oblivious to the queue behind. Not a big gripe and if thats all I can find wrong with the ACT life has to be good.

You may be confident you havent overstayed but before spending money on a police check and "hoping" it does not reveal something you do not wish to be seen, why not contact immigration and clarify the situation?

In answer to your quetion, a Police check will reveal if you have overstayed, hence my advice on checking with immigration before parting with your cash.
