  1. Interesting to read this we are now in our 7th year and love it we moved to Sydney and built our home a couple of years ago here. We took our kids back to visit the UK last Christmas, our youngest who was 9 when we came over had been pining for the UK for 6 years. We had a great time and loved seeing family and friends, hubby and I had been back a few times for family reasons but it was the first time for the two youngest. Since coming back our youngest son hasn’t mentioned going to live back in the UK, he is still proudly English but he sees his life in Aus now. Our eldest son lives and works in Melbourne with his Aussie fiancée, we all have citizenship now (it is SO worth getting), our wages weren’t bad in the UK but they are amazing here and we love our jobs. We are very thankful for everything we have and enjoying seeing more of Australia every year we are here.

  2. I react very badly to mossies here in Aus, I had no idea they were so bad. I reacted badly to gnats in the UK and here in Aus in my first summer I was like a buffet for them. I found if I got more than 10 bites at once (the most I’ve had is 16) I started to feel quite sick. I’ve tried about every spray on the market and the one I really like is ‘GO’ which can be bought in woolies or coles. I can go to BBQ’s and walk out in the evenings and stay bite free although an occasional one might get me on an area I haven’t thought to spray (like my eyelid!). I also am very careful when I go out at dusk, I spray and still try and cover most of my legs and arms with clothing. Problems come when I don’t spray repellent and are out and about in the day and random mossies bite me. Some of the worst have been- out for a few minutes putting washing on the line, putting petrol in my car, talking to the NRMA while my car was being fixed. I can’t predict those and those bites have been absolutely vicious!!! I’m in Sydney.

  3. Have to say that we had a lovely meal at his restaurant (one of our most expensive ones too), was appalled to find he'd been underpaying his staff.  I do wonder if the charges effected business - I don't think we'd have gone knowing that.

Yes we went his Press Club, Melbourne for a degustation meal 18 months ago and hands down I think it was the best food I have ever eaten. He has just closed this restaurant and a new one is being opened, I think it’s called Elektra or something like that but don’t think it’s going to be fine dining like The Press Club.

What job do you do? I would start there and work out where the best place for you to be and where would give you the most opportunities. We chose Sydney as it was where I believed I would enjoy my job the most and it has worked out very well. However with that choice has come very limited housing and we have been priced out of almost everywhere, ended up buying land on the outskirts of the city and building a beautiful home but it took a long time. Living costs are higher but you generally earn a lot more, my hubby and I earn more than 100% more money in our Aussie jobs than we did in the U.K.
so my advice is choose your spot! Personally I would only have come to Sydney or Melbourne. However we will retire on the central coast, country Victoria or Sunshine Coast. We love the beach but equally love the country and it’s much cheaper housing inland.

  5. Hi we lived in the Sutherland Shire too when we moved over here 6years ago with 3 kids. We rented in Illawong we had moved in the middle of the GFC had sold our house for less than we paid for it and found to our dispair we couldn’t afford to buy anything anywhere in Sydney as the prices went crazy as soon as we got here. We came on PR. Eventually we bought a cheap piece of land in south west Sydney in a new suburb and have just moved into our new home we built there. We never imagined it would take so long to get our own place though.
We absolutely love Australia and became citizens last year. Keep going I really promise you it’s worth it, both my husband and I work in the CBD and have quite a commute each day but it’s worth it for great jobs and our lovely home. Our kids most importantly are settled and happy. We go back to the U.K. at the end of the year for a holiday to catch up with family it will be interesting how the kids find it!

  6. Foreign birth certificate

    Bank card

Bank statement with your address (you can go to your Aus bank and ask for one over the counter) this is probably the easiest and quickest as you need something with your address on and you won’t have a utilities bill

    .

Edit: Sorry just seen you don’t have a bank account!

Do you have a job offer letter? Or any official gov letter like a visa offer etc

  7. Problem is with online shopping I like to try stuff on first, even in the U.K. I go into my fav shops - FatFace and White Stuff and see things I love then try them on and I look like a bag lady [emoji1] nothing better than being able to try before you buy!

  8. Hi all!

Recently moved from London to Melbourne, and seriously struggling with shops! UK highstreet spoiled us and we took it for granted!
For a bit of background, I'm 27.  Back home it would almost always be Next, Marks and Spencers, House of Fraser, River Island, New Look, warehouse, Oasis, and some bargains from Matalan and Primark. My style is simple and (i hope) young... LOL

Does anyone have any tips for shopping out here? Any go to stores for particular items? I feel like there are very low quality stores (such as cotton on) that I thought might be on Matalan/primark level but aren't, and then higher end things, but not very much in the way of something in the middle!
Anything I need im running to Zara and H&M at the moment, just out of habit, although i think they're AUD prices are outrageous!
There are so many important issues that you carefully consider before a move like this, you don't prepare for comical problems such as this... I feel as though everything else is under control and this is stressig me out! That can only be a good thing i suppose, if this is the biggest worry!!

Thanks in advance for any help!

Yes I COMPLETELY agree, been here 6 years now and it’s a struggle especially with shoes which are also outrageously expensive. For clothes I go to Myer and David Jones and buy Cue in the City for work clothes they are really nice and cheaper than the main Cue range, I also go to Saba (very expensive) target and Forever New, try Portmans too they have some good ranges of clothes at times. I am stocking up when I go back to the U.K. in November especially shoes!!

  9. Very frustrating I agree. Mine was sent by mail from NMC and there weren’t any problems with it reaching AHPRA. Maybe get them to email it too it’s worth trying but they will still need a hard copy. They need a direct route NMC - AHPRA so surely email would be fine if they were able to verify NMC email account which should be very easy.

  10. My son who is 15 likes them too he has all the tech but all of this is easy for him to give up too. He is quite lazy as in forgets to do his jobs and forgot to feed our dog last week so I knew taking his computer/PS4/iphone etc wasn’t going to hurt him so I grounded him and told him he wouldn’t be able to go to football training. That hurt him more than anything could. I’m not sure what to say, if he likes playing games with his friends can you encourage him to meet up with him for some physical games?

  11. I get confused with the different types of Brethern.  There's Plymouth Brethern and Exclusive Brethern.  The Brethern ladies and girls I see here (saw a group of them today having a picnic) all have long hair, long skirts/dresses and a head scarf type of thing.  I don't think they are Plymouth Brethern??  OR is their another type of Brethern?

You’re right there are a few different types but it’s important to know that this particular one is called either :-
    Exclusive Brethren
    Or Plymouth brethren
    Or Plymouth Brethren Christian Church
Are all the same brethren church they use these three names for a bit of confusion. This is definitely the brethren church the OP was offered the interview with. I recognise it, no other ones are as dogmatic, racist, homophobic and sexist.

  12. They are a law unto themselves in every respect.

I know because I was born into the exclusive brethren.

I went to high school just before the brethren started their own schools thank goodness. I was kicked out/excommunicated (they call it ‘withdrawn from’) at the age of 16 for going to the theatre to see a Shakespeare play my class were studying for English. Nothing is more important than the brethren, they believe they are special and have been born into greatness that places them above all other souls on earth. I lost all contact and forms of communication with my parents siblings and all my extended family overnight when I was kicked out and although the leadership has softened the rules slightly their dogma is unchanged. I would steer clear of any business, schools or so called charity work they do (their charity is the RRT which has a facebook page) which has ‘compassion’ as its motto. They now do charity work so they can continue to register as a charity and get tax free dollars. No other reason.

  13. Hi All, we lived in Melbourne on 457 visas from 2011 to 2016, since returning to Ireland and having a baby. We are looking at moving back to Melbourne hopefully mid to late 2019, and I'm just wondering if any of you know how quick we might get a mortgage.

I have checked my credit rating and it's very good, no outstanding or late payments etc. But I only have a cc with a low limit. My partner would be pretty much the same except for a higher cc limit, and I havent checked his so hoping his is excellent but probably not as we never had bill phones etc.

Upon arrival we would of course be renting, start up utilities and perhaps get a new cc with a limit of about 10k. I might get a small loan to buy a more expensive/newer car.

If my partner landed a perm job and I a maximum term position (the industry I would like to return to works on government contracts), do you think we would get approval within a year? Would I be better getting a perm job initially for the application then going for the job I really want?

I'm not looking for a discussion on how much houses are in Melbourne, we are well aware of that. I just have no idea how long we will need to be working etc. Before we can get approval.

    Thanks!!

I think you need to have permanent residency to get a mortgage, you will also need to have minimum 3 months salary going into your bank account and yes I think you need permanent jobs or very long contract. You will also need a minimum 5% deposit most lenders prefer 10-20%, you will also need to factor in stamp duty and mortgage insurance (can’t remember what this is exactly called) if your deposit is under 20%. Stamp duty and this insurance alone can add up to $80k depending on the cost of the home and that’s before you pay the deposit.

We avoided all this by buying a block of land, only paying a tiny amount of stamp duty (you don’t pay it on the build) and by the time we actually got to build the house 18 months later the price of the land had gone up so much we were able to borrow against this. It could be an alternative option for you to avoid these buying costs.

  14. I have been reading articles on housing bubble softening recently but now I no longer hear about it nor am I seeing housing prices going down. Has there been any softening ?

I haven’t seen any in Sydney, houses are still selling quickly and for very high sums where I live.
  15. thank you, if im honest i will apply on aged care as i have been doing this for 10 years and then look for manager roles once im out there.  would you recommend east or west coast ? for small towns near the beach ?

Plenty of work in aged care, I would advise you apply for permanent residency visa rather than a temp one as the health authorities are not finding these easy to support. Also applying for a job in Aus without a visa is not an attractive proposition for a hospital.
As far as living is concerned NSW is expensive, South Australia and Adelaide is cheaper and you could live near the beach. Otherwise live further inland. We live in Sydney but about 30km from the beach however I work 1km from the beach so I get my daily dose and beach walk (if I feel inclined). I don’t know about other parts of Aus, Sydney and Melbourne are the most expensive but great cities with lots to do and see.

  16. I am going to apply for the ANMAC modified assessment. I’m stumped at this point as I have no clue which code to apply under. My husband is going to be the main applicant on the visa and I am hoping to get the extra 5 points.
I am a registered nurse in Canada working as a Labour and delivery/Postpartum nurse. I am theater trained, I can scrub or scout and recover the patient.  I work with pregnant patients, triage them, manage the labour, I resuscitate the baby if needed and I continue with care for mother and baby up until discharge. I work with high and low risk patients.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to the ANZSCO code? Can I use more than one code?

Theatre nurse or recovery nurse. It sounds like you are not a registered midwife so you will not be able to apply for that registration.
  17. yeah sorry manly sydney.  few million well manly is out then...
i would be looking for a clinical nurse manager post there

Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in the world unfortunately, we live here and love it but in the future we will probably move up to the central coast. Just have a look on the skills requirement list for the visa you want to apply for as some of the nurse manager and nurse educator roles have been removed.
  18. hi all, we have just returned from a holiday north or Perth and we fell in loved with the place.  Although, we are really struggling with if we go do we go perth or manly.  we have never been to manly area but its been recommended.
I would be so grateful for any advice

Manly would be my choice but that’s because I love Sydney (are you talking about Manly, Sydney?) however Perth is much cheaper to live and is a nice place to be, depends on what you are coming for, what your job is and if you have a few million dollars in the bank to be able to afford Manly!

Gee that must be a tough one if it’s your kids wanting to back. It’s nice they want to keep that contact but not so great on your purse strings or annual leave allowance! I talk on the phone to my mum for in excess of half an hour every Monday - Friday when I commute to work so I definitely feel like I have plenty of contact, but I do still worry there will be a day when they aren’t here & I’ll regret all the opportunities I had to go & see them & chose not to. It’s really tough. I just wish they’d take it in turns to come here. I’ve chatted soooo many times to my parents explaining the strain they put on us by refusing to come here. We don’t have children yet but that’s another issue I raised with my mum. Her answer to everything is that she’ll pay for mine & my hubbys flight tickets every other year in exchange for not coming here...she doesn’t really ‘get it’.

The kids actually haven’t been back since we arrived 5 years ago, hubby and I have been back 3 times each separately (sorry I’ve re read my post and it didn’t read quite right), we went back for various reasons sick parents (both of ours) then back again for funerals and I went back to Europe for a conference with a tag-on trip to England. This trip is for the kids who we promised when we came over we would go back after 5 years in Aus. After this one we are done with going back for a long time. Plenty more of the world to see!!!

  20. Oh my goodness I feel I could have written this post except neither hubby or I are particularly close to our families but our children miss their extended family. We have been back 6 times in 5 years (not all of us together but this has been mainly due to poor health of our parents and subsequent funerals) and have booked a trip back to the U.K. this November. I have said this is the last one for a long time, we want to see the rest of the Southern Hemisphere too and the family have all agreed. We love it here in Aus and there is nothing I want more than to go and visit Broome, the Kimberley’s etc!! Besides which each trip back eats so much into our leave and it feels like going back isn’t a holiday but becoming a obligation. I think you have to say to yourself that’s enough, make the decision and use Skype!
