  1. He has a Samsung, but hasn't said the model number or age.

Some of the initial HDTV Samsungs only had non-HD tuners, so even though they could display HD, they couldn't internally decode HD Free-To-Air channels, just SD. Depending on the region and state, Australia is switching off SD so the number of channels available on an old TV may be variable anyway.

Then you have the issue of tuning a Euro TV into Australia by masquerading as a different country. You do this to get the sound channel, the picture should be fine anyway so long as it can decode HD.

Clear the stored UK channels, and let the TV Autoscan for new...you shouldn't need to manually tune anything even on an old Samsung. If it can't Autoscan and find channels, what the aerial like on the roof?

The best answer is to go to Dick Smith's and get an Australian HD Digital Tuner for $30 and plug it in...just use your TV as a monitor until you can afford a new TV. At that price it's a no brainer.

It's a Sony Bravia kdk55w905a releases in april 2013. I tried autoscan but still it cant fi d any channels. I have a free view but it only has a few channels so was hoping to get the 30 or so mentioned here.

Do you also know if I can watch uk channels over the net and what would I need to do so. Are there any ways to do this

  2. Hi, I brought three TVs - Sony Bravia, Sharp and Toshiba - all digital tvs. Initially, I did not get any reception. I resolved the problem by going into settings - finding "first tuning" - in Sony Bravia I chose Denmark (as the transmission is identical to Australia - as is Italy, Netherland and Austria). In the other two TVs Australia was present as a choice.

As I do not have any top box or fox tel, I selected antenna (not cable) and then selected auto-tune. And...after some trepidation...I got about 35 free to air channels...good quality picture and sound too!

I was only able to do this because some kind soul in Poms in Oz had kindly put up a link to a table setting out all countries and the format in which they transmit TV programmes. So I was able to pick up the country which transmitted in the format identical to Australia.

As you can see by my language I am not at all technical...my nine year old probably is more technical than I am!!

    Hi

Thanks for this useful info. I habe struggled with knowing frequencies and bands on my Bravia tv. Do you have the table with frequencies that you mentioned in your post. In the meantime I am using a freeview box but it has about 10 or so channels only and if I can get 35 like you I'll be sorted

  3. Buy a cheap set top box/PVR (similar to freeview boxes in the UK) from any electrical store, plug it in and off you go. We brought 2 UK TVs with us and bought two PVRs. Not cheap ones though. We bought ones with dual tuners and hard drives so we could record TV, but if you just want to be able to watch it a cheap 'free view' box will be fine. Something like this http://www.harveynorman.com.au/teac-digital-set-top-box-pvr.html

So does it meam the inbuilt freeview doesnt work here.

  4. In the settings options for tuning it. There may be an option for manually selecting the country.

Thanks. I will have a go tonight and see if I can find those settings

  5. I agree with others, try setting it up for Germany, I"ve heard that may work. However a set top box is really cheap anyway, so not a great loss if it doesnt work.

    Nick

    How do I do this

  6. I assume you mean you brought your UK TV.

No expert, but as nobody else has replied - the UK tuner will not pick up Oz digital channels.

If you search the forum, there may be a country setting you can use to get it to work IF your TV allows you to set it.

Obviously select Oz if it is there, but I recall some other (European??) countries might work.

Otherwise you could buy a set top box, or check out ebay/gumtree for second hand - make sure it is HD and not older SD

Yes, I broughy with me my UK tv and have not been getting any signal. So how do I chanhe the settings. Is it something a layman like myself can do or I need someone to come in

  7. Hi guys

I brought in my Samsung led tv but have not been able to get it to work. When I connect the antenna it does tune into any stations. Havr not yet decided which digital pay TV to go with so was hoping to be able to watch free-to-air channels by simply plugging in the antenna.

    Any ideas?

  8. Hi everyone we have been in adelaide for 9 weeks now and are living in Glenelg. So far everything has gone smoothly with getting a job and the kids are fitting well in school. Hope are future continues to go well here its best move we've ever made....loving it! Good luck to everyone for their future too

I arrived in Adelaide on 17th Aug and attended and interview in Mt Gambier a week later and got the job. Stayed in Adelaide for 8 weeks before coming down here. Adelaide was good for me especially when you compare the weather with mt gambier which is always cold especially in the evenings. But all in all a very good move for us. Dont regret upping sticks from England

  9. Loved reading these posts!

Hi @Wen66, my husband and I will be moving to Adelaide in March. It's taken is nearly 2 years to get out visa but we finally have it!

I have a question about baggage allowance. I guess you flew with Singapore airlines. What was their policy with a 1 way migration journey? Did you have to tell them at time of booking and what did they allow per person?

Thanks for your help in advance!

When you check in just telk them you are migrating and they will allow you the 10kg extra. When we booked our tickets we were advised of the extra 10 but the guy at vhe king in wasn't aware so he ckecked with his manager and it was confirmed. Just have your visa grant letter ready to show them

  10. Thanks for you response Gidza. That's what I thought and hoped for, but just wanted to hear from somebody else.

Fingers crossed we get the house sold, and its not something we need to worry about.

What to do you mean about "Registering" my arrival? Contacting Victoria State Sponsor?

Dont know if its the same but with SA you have to register on their website your arrival and then they will send you short surveys every three months for 2 years. Guess its a way to check how you are getting on as well as checking you are still in the state for the required 2 years

  11. Hey Guys,

Just wondering.... Does anybody know how long do you need to stay in Oz to validate your 190 Visa?

We are planning on moving over in the first week of January (as long as everything goes to plan). I am just preparing myself for the possibility of not being able to sell our house prior to validating our Visa's. If that is the case we will fly over in January to validate our Visa's, my wife and kids will stay in Australia with her brother and I will come home until the house is sold.

    Cheers

    Eddie

Dont' think there is a period to stay, just as long as you validate - in - out - should be sufficient.

I would suggest you register your arrival as well especially if your family is staying behind

  12. Hi eddieb7 I think everyone has been organising their moves seeing as we all waiting for such a long time!. Our story so far ... We have managed to rent our house out and moved in with parents all be it a bit cramped lol... Our furniture was collected end of july and we fly out on 15th September to Adelaide. It seems to be all happening fast but hope everything goes smoothly once we get there. We have also opened an bank account in Australia. Hope everyone is getting on well with their plans too. All the best for your new future I wish you all the best[emoji2]

I'm heading out 4 weeks b4 you do. Hope we can meet up when you get to Adelaide

  13. Thanks for this post. I have been working furiously since I got my grant on May 26. Served 2 months notice at work, booked my flight, applied for jobs and got an interview lined up for next week Friday - I fly out tomorrow headed for Adelaide, put the house on the market and accepted an offer within a week of advertising, very hectic indeed

  14. Hi guys.

I understand items less than a year old have to be declared and if they cost more than $1000 they will be charged import duty.

Say I have something worth 1500 do I get charged duty on 1500 or 500 since items below 1000 go in duty free.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks

  15. Alcrock, last night I was reading on another thread about a couple whilo have just been granted but their child has some heart condition. Cant remember which forum. That reminded me of your post. So just to encourage you and go for it.

  16. My partner and I are going it alone. No probs so far we can't afford £5000 for an agent. But we both have medical issues and it's heart breaking to think we have to spend £3800 for visas plus £1000 for both Medicals to possibly be refused. Am I right in thinking there is absolutely no way I can get any idea of medical yes or no before applying for the VISA?

    thanks

The doc will submit the meds electronically and you wont know the results. However, if there is something seriously wrong the doc will let you know if it needs urgent attention. If not they wont contact you. So no contact from yhe doc after meds is a goid sign.

Regarding your medical condition, it depends whether it's one that will mean you will require attention on public funds in which case they may refuse. But in most cases if the condition is 'ordinary' it wont result in a refusal. My understanding is they dont want to go to Aussie and straight away become a liability yo the Aussie taxpayer through treatment on public monies.

So dont let the meds put you off. Besides, there is no other way of getting the visa. And if you font try you will never know if you would have got it so go for it and best wishes

  17. Hi,

I was just hoping to ask those who have just gone through this process about uploading documents onto the immi account.

I have already uploaded all the relevant documents to support my application but there are a few documents (listed below) where it says they are recommended but not required.

    Qualifications - Australian, Evidence of

    Travel Document

Work Experience - Australian, Evidence of

Work Experience - Overseas, Evidence of

I don't have any Australian qualifications, work experience etc (and I didn't say I did on the application) so my question is, is it better to upload some kind of word document saying I don't have any documents of that nature or just leave them? I am just wondering if anyone is going to look at it/be assigned it while there are still documents showing as recommended rather than received, or does that not matter?

I know there is a stinking backlog anyway but I would like to avoid any delays where possible!

Cheers and fingers crossed for everyone waiting at the moment!

Ignore them. The forms on there are the same for everyone so just upload what applies to your case. If anything extra is required CO will let you know

  18. Hi All,

I've lodged my 190 invitation on 12th of June. But still no CO assigned. Can I do medical for me and my family? Kindly reply if anybody knows about it.

I advise you look for a thread with people that lodged in June or start a new one. That way you get better responses as you wilk be in the same boat. This thread has people just awaiting their grants or have already been granted.

To answer your query it is possible to upload medicals and PCC upfront even before a CO has been allocated to you. But you will need to generate a code through immiaccount that your prefered hosp will use to link your meds to immi
