  1. Hi

Another suburbs question I'm afraid. Has anyone lived in either of these places or know what they're like? Are the surrounding suburbs nice or should any be avoided?

    Thanks for any advice

  2. Hi all

Just wondered if anyone could me out. My wife and I are permanent residents in Victoria and she is going through the police recruitment process. They want a certificate showing she has no convictions from UK but the only one we can find that might be suitable is the ACPO (ACRO) one that you use to get you visa. The certificate says it is for immigration purposes though. Victoria police haven't got back to us to tell us whether it is suitable or not. I just wondered if anyone has been in a similar situation and knows if this is the right certificate or there is another one we need??

    Thanks

  3. Hi

I'm moving to just outside Melbourne in October and just wondered how easy it was to rent in Oz. Do estate agents need to see a certain number of payslips before they let you rent or can you just get a property straight away. I have a job over there starting in November so can prove that I have a wage coming in.

Also, what's the mortagage situation like? Is it easy to get one - I've seen new build companies offering 97% finance but do these deals really exist?

Any advice would be much appreciated

  4. OTE=sallyandkev;1936243957]Hi , are you still looking for work? Whereabouts are you?

I've got a job already in a private school teaching Science . I had an interview down in London in April. I start in November

  5. Hi there md0u10fd

Congrats on getting full registration. Just a quick question- where did you get the form from for your boss to sign?? Was it sent to you, or did you find it on the website?

    Thanks

    Donna

    Hi Donna,

Yeah like wolvesaussie has said, you just follow the instructions online and in the section about how much teaching experinece you have you can download another form which is mainly green (it might be called form B but can't remember) if you want to apply for full registration. Then your headmaster fills it in for you and you sent it off along with your certified documents (which your headmaster can also certify).

If I can do it then it must be straight forward but let me know if you need any more help!!

  6. Be aware that the goalposts for overseas teachers getting fully registered teacher status were moved at the start of the year, you will probably have to go in at provisional status and then have to get the experience and evidence to upgrade to fully qualified.

    From the VIT website, ( http://www.vit.vic.edu.au/professionalpractice/article.aspx?id=1 )

"From 1 January 2013, if you are applying for full registration and have evidence of previous teaching experience of at least 80 days in an Australian or New Zealand school and can provide a reference from a principal in an Australian or New Zealand school that indicates you meet the National Standards, we can grant you immediate full registration.

If you are applying for full registration and your evidence of at least 80 days previous teaching experience is from a country other than Australia or New Zealand, then on assessment of your evidence we may grant you provisional registration (experienced). After 80 days work in an Australian or New Zealand school (or equivalent workplace) you can apply for full registration using a process for experienced teachers."

Hi just to let you guys know that I am a teacher from UK and was granted full registration last week by VIT. It only took about 3 weeks to come through so if you have enough experience (my boss just had to complete a form stating that I met their teaching standards) then you will get full not provisional registration as some people have been stating.

  7. Hi

I teach Science and am moving to Victoria in November. I got my visa in February and got a job in a private school (interview in London) in April. It was the first one I applied for!! I can't speak for other subjects but I found it quite easy to find a job. I think they like UK teachers and emphasise any work you've done on developing curricula.

  8. Thanks for all the replies!!

Feel alot more comfortable knowing that my profession is in demand. Regarding the maths curriculum, at present i teach the scottish curriculum and therefore do not have experience in teaching A Level maths, quickly scanning the course its very similar to Higher and Advanced Higher in Scotland, would this pose a problem?

I;m a bit confused regarding the IELTS do i have to sit this? i have read a few conflicting things on the Internet

    Have you looked at http://www.independentschools.com.au/search-results-jobs/?action=search&listing_type%5Bequal%5D=Job&keywords%5Ball_words%5D=&JobCategory%5Bmulti_like%5D%5B%5D=&City%5Blike%5D=&State%5Bmulti_like%5D%5B%5D=

Lots of maths jobs coming available now

  9. It shouldn't pose a problem - just state that what you have taught is the equivalent A level but a maths teacher (I'm Science) may be able to offer more help. I would definitely stress the similarity of what you have taught to the Aus curriculum too.

I did my IELTS and got level 8.5 overall. For a morning's work it's an easy way to get a lot of extra points for you visa application. My advise, therefore, would be to do it.

  10. Hi Sahara

Yeah I bet it is the same school!! I'm due to start 2014 so have a bit of time to find a place to live etc. House prices don't seem as ridiculous as they are in Melbourne so hopefully I'll be able to get something nice. Are there plenty of things to do in Ballarat? It seems like a nice place.

  11. Hi

I looked at the schools' websites and used http://www.independentschools.com.au in order to find my job in a private school. You don't need your VIT number in order to apply for jobs - I still don't have mine!! What's important is that you have the qualifications (PGCE and degree) as then VIT registration is a formality and schools fully understand this. My mate went to Perth too and got a job when he was out there but it is possible to get one lined up before you go like I have.

My interview was down in London but they might interview over skype - many schools apparently are used to interviewing overseas and interstate candidates this way. It is slightly early to start looking for 2014 but I would start now. Most jobs are advertised July/August I think but if I were you I would research which schools you like now so that you can check their websites every few days or so in the coming months. I start November which is a slightly strange time but at least I only have to work a month and then it's the summer hols!!

  12. Hi

I am going over in November and have just got a full time Science teaching job in a private school near Melbourne. I found Science and Maths are in demand and had no problem finding something. I saw lots advertised and was lucky enough to get the first one I applied for. You need to emphasise on your applications that you have been involved in developing your departmental curriculum/scheme of work as they are light years behind in Oz with this and want teachers who have experience of it. Just say you've done it even if you haven't!!!!

Also, people can be quite negative on here regarding teaching job prospects and it is true for many teaching jobs but I am VERY confident you will be fine with maths.

  13. Hi all,

Been offered a job at a nice private school in Ballarat. However, I've never been there and not sure what the place is like. Does anyone know which areas are nice or is it better to look for a place in between Ballarat and Melbourne say Melton or Bacchus Marsh? Any advice would be much appreciated.
