  1. Hi guys, just a quick question. I've got a 176 visa (permanent resident) but the visa itself will be due for renewal in a while (not until July 2016 actually). I came in as the spouse of my now ex partner. Can I renew the visa? If so how do I do it? Will I be man-handled onto the first available flight back to the UK?

I'd really rather stay if I can.

Also, my passport is due for renewal, what happens with the visa itself i.e. will I need to show both the new passport and the old one containing the visa?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Alan

  2. Me too. I can't get a basic bloody admin job. 1 interview in 3 years. Need a heap of qualifications for an office junior role. Nothing mentioned about my years of Board level PA experience in London and the SE. Ggggrrr :(

Well just as soon as my software testing company requires a PA you'll be the first person I contact Northern ;-)

  3. Didn't you work in a care setting, I thought I remembered you mentioning addictions. I could be completely getting you mixed up with someone else though. If so then I apologise but if I haven't could you not go back into that again?

Hi Stacey, that's right but they won't let me here for lots of bureaucratic reasons :-) good to hear from you.

  4. What are your IT skills like DS? Do you think you could learn new computer related skills?

Sorry to ask a pertinent question but is your appearance (or could it be) 'business smart'?

I have an IT training company in Scotland and I am willing to help you retrain by 'distant learning' without charging you (you would have to pay for the exam - about $100 - if you put in the work and pass the mock I set you I'll loan you it if I have to.

If you want to come back to Scotland I'll help you get a job here - if you want to stay in Perth I can help there too. I am 47 and have no problem finding work.

Hi, that sounds interesting. My computer skills are reasonable. I've got an MSc in Business I.T. Systems from Strathclyde Uni and I'm an approved marker for the ECDL. European Computer Driving License. But...I've got no maths or calculus or anything like that so I can't program. Got no idea about programming and Im not in any way creative so can't design either :-/ But I'd definitely like to know more. Really really appreciate the offer. Can you tell me more? :-)

I can be business smart. Heres my website: http://www.alandbell.com.au there's some photos of me on it :-)

  5. ......I and many of my friends.....are around your age......

.....and get jobs out of the papers....

    ......unskilled.....

    ......low paid.....

    ......but rewarding because its something......

......there are unskilled jobs that can give job satisfaction.....

.......they may not pay well.....but sometimes there's a chance to climb the ladder a little....

.......it's a choice until something better comes along.......

It not a choice. I couldn't even get a job in Woolies.

  6. .........employment agencies....

    .........seek.com....

    ........gumtree.....

..........local shops and places who employ......

..........I know you said you do......

..........but it's a continual exercise until you find something......

    ..........I truly wish you luck........

Om nearly 50. None of that has ever worked. None of it. Ive never had a job out of a paper I have daily alerts from seek and all the major job sites. The problem is: I have no skills. Nothing to sell. If I were a plumber or electrician I'd never be out of work. But I'm not so I am. That's just reality. I want to get skills by going to Uni but that route is closed. I'm out of ideas.

  7. .........I don't think they do......

    ........I just encouraged the action......

........and hopefully you'll achieve your goals soon with such positive actions......

........change can happen at any time......

    .........hope it's soon for you.........

Eh? Sorry, I'm lost. What positive action Tink? This iscall stuff I've been doing all my life and norhing has worked out.

  8. ....but who are you asking....?

....you must find someone with one to offer......

    ....perseverance......

    .....keep looking.....

    .....only you can do it.....

    .....others can help......as they are....

......but you must help yourself as well.....

    ......think positively.....

Why does everyone think I don't think positively? I want to go to Uni but I can't afford to. Want a job but even though I try I can't get one. Oh yes I try every day. I do persevere - partly why I started this thread. I attend my employment consultant every week. I do all the things I'm supposed to. I look, I hope. Nothing ever changes.

  9. It's not about someone else out there stepping up to the plate and giving you a big break. It is about you stepping up to the plate now and having a go, making a plan. I sincerely wish you all the best. There has been so much support and help on this thread for you and you do have a chance to follow your dream - but you have to do it now.

You can do it, it is possible.

You see that's the issue. I did step up. I tried to better myself but I can't afford it. I tried with a job last year but had a heart attack and a breakdown. Ive been trying to get a job ever since. I even went to TAFE but that didn't help. Plans are all very well but there has to be something at the end and there just isnt.

  10. ......try and find all the positives in the posts you have received....!

    ......change your mindset......

......once you start looking for the helpful and good.....

    ......you'll leave behind the negatives......

.......so many here with your best interests at heart,,,,,

......keep that thought at the front of your mind.....

.....you will come through if you stay positive.......

I hear you Tink. But almost 50 years of struggle for what, nothing, tells me that it takes not just a PMA, but lots of luck, the right connections and well I don't know what else. But with the greatest of respect being optimistic about having nothing, I just can't see how that will help. Sorry. If someone out there steps up to the plate and gives me the big break I need I'll wholeheartedly accept that being positive worked. But that isn't going to happen though is it :-/

  11. You need to start looking for those positives. It's probably a sign of your depression but, you have somewhere to live , and benefits and citizenship and that training is just around the corner. I don't want to argue but you say where you live in Secret Harbour it's quicker to get a bus to Warnbro and a train to Mandurah. That just isn't true! I've lived in Secret Harbour and I work there now and know every street. It's 20 minutes in the wrong direction to Warnbro Station. Your either mis informed or making excuses. You have to try honestly you do.

Well fair enough. It isn't a deal breaker is it. I'd find a way to Mandurah. But I need a job first.

  12. When did things change drastically in Scotland? People I said were there - were there last year I think whoever you have spoken to at Glasgow Council do not know what they are talking about

Things have changed drastically in the last 12 months. If you are out of the country for more the two and a half years you will not get benefits for six months. I have no relatives left therefore no local connections. That means housing are no longer obliged to provide shelter. I have contacts on social cwork who have been very thorough as they would like to see me safe (mainly because I owe them $$$$ s). I no longer even hold a valid passport!

  13. How far off citizenship are you? I'm starting a degree in Feb 2014, I'm 46 and daunted! I didn't have citizenship when I applied, they were lovely but advised that as PR (then) I would be charged local fees but as soon as I became a citizen I could put the remaining semesters on HECS. I deferred a semester for various reasons but in that time I became a citizen, when do you qualify for citizenship? Once you apply and pass your interview/test, your need for HECS can accelerate the ceremony process and you can actually have it done within days for that reason? maybe apply for your uni place, get that secured then focus on your citizenship?

Hi Jessie. Yeah I'm still about 15 months off (Not sure if they count from when the visa was granted or when I landed). Either way I'm a ways off it. Im 48 now so I'd be like 54 by the time I'd be fully qualified. Maybe folk are right and I should just forget it. Hmmm.

  14. Tink your post is lovely as usual - Don't know why I am still posting but OP I can assure you I have friends who have gone back and got benefits after 20 years away and others who got free university after 30 years away but as you said you do not want to go back - can't say any more - Good luck

Thank you though your post isnt actually helpful. Things have changed drastically in the UK with respect to the benefits system as I said I have been in touch with Glasgow City Social Work and it effectively means living on the streets. Thank you for you contribution.

  15. I think unless anyone has any suggestions for actually obtaining assistance to pay for University then we're probably done here. If I can recap: permanent residents get no help whatsoever so id have to pay cash up front. So, my only options would be to:

    1 Pay everything up front

    2. Go part time but still have to find cash from somewhere

    3. Forget the idea

    Have I missed anything?
