  1. Having a nightmare day !! Have a job to go to, starting Monday 1 September. We were going to book flights for the 12th so we could have a couple of weeks to chill, get over jet lag, have a potter around etc. shippers booked for 24 July, dog booked to fly on the 19th etc etc all in place. Due to exchange contracts on house this week, complete on 31st July and have booked a caravan to stay in until 11th August. All perfect until today :arghh: Our buyers buyers have at the last minute decided they will not complete until 21 August as -wait for it - they fancy a holiday first aaarrggghh even though we are ready and have things booked etc. our buyers are ready to go and move on 31 July. Our estate agent says why don't we just go on 12th Aug as planned and it will still complete on 21 August. I just feel so uneasy about this. Being on the other side of the world with no money until the proceeds come through. Should I be worried ? Have other people had this ??

alternatively we complete on 21 August and fly out a couple of days later which only be a week before I start work. Do other people start that quickly after arriving ?? Am I stressing needlessly ?? I'm so grateful to have a job I know that. Thoughts / reassurance pplleeasee.

Sorry for for the rant but there's only the dog here and he doesn't understand !!!

We arrived on the Friday and I started on the Monday. It's been hard going to be honest, but if you could give yourself a week that should be enough to get over the jet lag and get yourself straight. I think I'd feel like you and would prefer to be around for completion. Hope it all goes smoothly for you!

  2. Hi All

I'm sorry if this is something which has been asked loads of times before, but I'm just wondering what documentation I'll have to have in place prior to buying a car in WA?

I'm going to have to hit the ground running ready for starting work so soon after we arrive, so I was wondering if I get my ATM card and Medicare card sorted in the first few days (plus UK passport and drivers licence), whether this would be sufficient? I suppose the key thing I need to know is whether my UK driving licence will be sufficient (as I know I can drive on it for the first 3 months I think), or whether I'll need to get a WA licence before being able to buy?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

  3. He was able to register for the exam this Saturday, and picked up that book for studying :) Hopefully it goes well!!

Wow that was quick, ha ha! Best of luck with it. From what Rick said at the time, I don't think there are any surprises on the day, so as long as your husband has a practice with the book I'm sure he will do great!

  4. We were in the same boat as you trying to push everything through before Rick turned 33, and it was actually the one part in the whole process that held us back because he only got the results he needed (7 or above in each element) after 3 attempts. Like Adonna said, I'd get it booked ASAP and getting doing loads of exam practice questions. IELTS looks simple on the face of it, but you need to learn how to answer their style of questions. We got the 'Official IELTS Practice Materials 2' from Amazon and it was really useful, but it didn't stop me from tearing my hair out trying to explain to Rick that he needed to answer things their way! Good luck with it!

  5. Oh well, I have received a notification that my message s too short, are they taking the piss????

I have been here in WA for about 15 years. Yeah sure it is great if you want to drive to the local supermarket with no hassle. BUT there are so many disadvantages.

No 1 Australia is full of very ignorant people (otherwise known as bogans)

No 2 The weather is certainly better than in the UK, but that takes away from our excitement of going somewhere warm for 2 weeks p a.

No 3 Everyone here try's to outdo others with their disgusting Mac Mansions, which are totally tasteless.

No $ Once your house is about 30 years old, everybody will give u grief unless u knock it down and build a new one. Sooo environmentally unfriendly!

No 6 As I was told when I came over, there are more sharks on the land than in the sea.

No 7 Don't forget for 1 minute to underestimate the sadness (on both sides) of leaving your family.

No 8 This place is not and will never be home.

No 9 If you choose to take this path, like I did.....Think about what you are leaving behind. IE your heritage, your family and the love and support that you can give to them and also remember that if one or two of your children marries/partners with an Aussie you are stuck!

No 10 Don't always convince yourselves that you can go back, because it is not always that easy.

And on a final note, if you love shopping malls and hate independent retailers, you may think this is great. But I for one have no interest in Big Brother Business and it has got seriously expensive to live here. I do believe it will get worse.

Basically this is not a great place to live ad until my dying day I truly regret coming here.

I think I would have been better off in Southern Ireland (I am not Irish by the way) where people are lovely and intelligent.

Tread your own path, but think of the long term repercussions.

I seem to have missed out on no 5, but never mind I am sure most of you will get the gist lol.

We're close to heading off to start a new life in WA in a matter of weeks, and whilst that therefore means that I don't have the first idea what you're experiencing yet, from the outside (but being someone who has visited and has relatives in WA) the majority of the items on your list seem quite trivial. Apart from the obvious issues regarding family etc, I wonder if you would find similar things in the UK equally irksome if you moved back? After all, you found yourself able to leave the place behind 15 years ago, so how did you feel about the UK when you left back then? Whatever you decide to do I hope it makes you more happy than you are now, whether that's to bite the bullet and make the move, or to attempt to acknowledge the positives that WA has to offer you. Good Luck!

  6. No photos, I've taken many but theyre a bit graphic am afraid. She wont be winning prettiest bitch for a while lets put it that way.

    '

We've been back to vets every day, she is slowly improving in herself, ate for the first time today 3 x bowls of chicken (small). Unfortunately infection and dead necrotic skin are causing issues, medication changes yesterday as painkillers upsetting her stomach and today new antibiotics on top of old ones. It will be a long road to full health but am praying she makes it...signs are good but infection is a worry.

Poor little thing. Hope she's on the mend now.

  7. On my HP Desktop printer you open the scan software and then after each page or side has scanned you just scan the next and it saves them all as one document for you. I can't remember the wording, but after each scan you're given the option to scan again to add to the same file, or create a new file. Also, if you've got Adobe Acrobat then if you save your scans as PDFs then you can combine files to one document or vice versa too. Hope this helps!

  8. Of course I have strong feelings....but no disrepect to Kelly for sure. I'm sure she is just towing the NHS line. I too worked for the NHS for 11 years before moving to Oz . I loved my job, but I will still stand stand that things need to be changed. Would you like to go thru losing someone just because the government refused to aknowledge they had it wrong?

Would you like to go thru losing someone just because the government refused to aknowledge they had it wrong?

Bit of an odd question that really given that I made it clear that from personal experience I don't agree with the governments current policy on it.

I can't thank the system enough though for how I was screened, diagnosed and treated back when it was offered earlier, so I think there's also a lot to praise about what is offered too.

  9. Wow such strong feeling fifi... I didn't read it like that though to be honest. Sounded like Kelly was just giving us the facts about the NHS's current stance on when the test should be carried out and why. Doesn't mean we have to agree, but I found the point about the labs refusing to process swabs quite interesting - didn't have a clue they would do that!

  10. I only said that Fi as i think in Britain they can get smear tests if they are sexually active, yet if they are not they can't until they are 25, sort of promotes early sex don't you think?

This poor woman as died because of silly rules.

I think currently in the UK you're only 'invited' to have a smear test from the age of 25 regardless of whether you're sexually active or not, but whether you can ask for one before this age I'm unsure. I had my first when I was 23 (the age was younger back then), and this showed up severe abnormalities which I had to have months of treatment for and now annual smears, and I think it's awful that girls currently have to wait until 25 to screen for a disease which affects so many younger people.

I don't think earlier smears would encourage younger people to be sexually active at all either... There was a widespread HPV immunisation programme in the UK a few years ago where school aged girls (12 to 13 I think) were offered the vaccine to protect against some (not all) forms of the virus which cause the disease. The virus in it's different forms is carried by an incredibly high percentage of the population, so the vaccine I think protected against some of the types most associated with cell abnormalities and development of the disease.

I just hope the current awareness generated by Sophie's case can lead to changes so that younger women get the screening when thy need it.

  11. Hi Ange,

Thanks for the reply. We originally contacted our old line manager (we both worked there lol) and she wont as it is against company policy. Hence approaching HR. They will not do it. They dont even do references for leavers new companies. It is really annoying as I worked there 6 years and DH 4 years and we have nothing to show for it bar payslips and some emails with complements that I printed off. Its a pain. I am stuck on what we can do.

Flipping heck they're awkward buggers aren't they!!! Hope you manage to get something sorted anyway.

  12. Hey,

I know there are a few threads at the moment regarding payslips ect for proof of employment, but we having the opposite problem in we have all the payslips and bank statements, but can not get a reference.

From a points perspective, we are struggling to get a reference from his earliest employer. Its been 4 years since he worked there, we need a reference just for the last year he worked there as thats what we are claiming. Basically, they are saying it is not company policy to give a reference, not even to just confirm he actually worked there  There is no way they will give one, and the HR will no longer even take our call or acknowledge our emails :cry:

Can we submit a self/statutory declaration, like we did for the skills assessment?

    Thanks xx

    Hi!

Could you not contact your other half's previous line manager or supervisor and ask them for one rather than going through HR? Rick needed one from further back that 4 years, so got the contact details of his previous supervisor and emailed him directly. Rick actually wrote the reference (we needed a really detailed one as evidence for his skills assessment), emailed it to Andy, and then Andy printed it on letter headed paper and signed it. Might be worth a try? Good luck with it though!

  13. Concept Australia,manchester and Kent,fees are £1700 a cpl i think,staged payments,meds etc extra obv

We always end up seconding Pablo's comments when anyone asks about agents . Can't praise the fellas at Concept Manchester enough. £1500 fees for us as a couple and worth every penny and then some!

  14. Hi. Just wondering if anyone can advise on whether I'd be better doing my CBT over here, or waiting and doing everything from scratch over in Perth? Rick has a full bike license but neither of us has a bike over here, so I'm wondering if I'd just be wasting my time doing it before I go. Is anyone familiar with the costs and process over there for applying for a licence and doing the tests etc?

Thanks in advance for any help!

  15. My bloody Mother-in-Law has practically harangued us into staying until after Christmas so she can see us for a bit longer, and now she's chosen to have elective surgery (with a 3 days hospital stay) over Christmas! So, we're left with the dilemma of do I go to my nanna's for Christmas and abandon my wife's Uncle (who lives on his own), or do I ignore my nanna in order to ensure that he isn't alone on Christmas Day!?

    Effing nightmare!

Glad to know it's not just bloody us!!!!

  16. Nope, old PR ran out in july gone, steve just handled my rrv app,got till august next yr to sell the hse and go,but my ex partner has landed me with all kinds of legal and financial complications over the house, thru no fault of mine btw,but anyway, theres a lot of obstacles to overcome,i live in hope rather than any certainty tbh

Oh balls, sorry to hear that. Gives you a bit more time to get the house (and her) sorted I guess. Women hey; we're all a pain in the arse aren't we !

  17. I agree,dealt with Steve mostly,good lad,thank you,good luck to you too!

Steve and Martin are both sound aren't they - really down to earth and straight talking with everything. Where are you up to with everything? Any closer to getting out there??

  18. I used an agent because of time constraints, tbh if i had more time i might well have done it myself, plenty on here do,there's loads of good sorts on here who help and advise on the process and how to go about things, please bare in mind, you "still" have to do loads of form filling, chasing references/statements etc yourself, despite using an agent.

Re agents tho,i used CONCEPT AUSTRALIA,manchester and Kent i think, staged payments, and an excellent company, got me and a few cpl's i know their PR,think the norm is approx £1700 agent fees, plus meds etc etc, good luck anyway

We used Concept in Manchester too, and you can see from our signature that we were successful! I can't praise those guys enough, and knowing what we know about the process now, I'd still go back and use them rather than go it alone. It's hard enough to manage all the paper work and assessments etc as it is without having to go it alone. The reassurance and experience they offered us was priceless, and I don't think their fee of £1500 comes close to the true value of everything they do for you.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do!
