They are young enough to work for another 20 years but there is a subtle ageism in Aus and getting jobs when you are over 50 gets harder and harder. But if they are very well heeled they should be ok.
Getting a job in your early forties is tough enough!

The rental market in Melbourne is very tight. We showed our agent a bank statement with enough funds to pay two year's rent, no probs. They still wouldn't let to us until we proved one of us had a guaranteed job in place.

Ok, I have the old UK paper licence, issued in the 80s. In the UK I can ride a moped on this. Can I ride one in Oz (VIC) without needing to sit a test?
Cheers

I don't know Amit. That's something you need to ask your CO.

Australia is far too late in pioneering nuclear power, as the focus now has shifted from fusion to fission. As for coal. Most people on this forum don't know what they're talking about. The majority of coal burnt isn't the nice shiny black stuff. It is brown coal called lignite. It's a young and moist coal which is so inefficient it produces around 30% more CO2 than black coal. Black coal, in itself, is a relatively clean source of power. As for wind power. Forget it. The state of Gujarat in India just had a massive blackout, and that's normally 'windy' too.

Do you have a visa to work?

Give St Kilda a miss- nice for a visit, not to stay. I'd be looking East, most of the towns are ok and decent schools on the whole.
St Kilda is brilliant.

I applied for my TFN a couple of weeks ago and it arrived in the post within the week. (Melbourne)

Here in EGYPT agents do not tell you exact details and exact steps unless you make a contract with him and pay 50% of the fees which is 2500 $ out of 5000 $
You'll make that back in your first month Speculate to accumulate.

Get yourself into the St Kilda area. You have Luna Park funfair and the beach on your doorstep. But avoid Fitzroy & Grey Street. The tram is at the end of the line and 25 minutes to the CBD.

Police Clearance and Medicals expire after 12 months.

Not an expert, but I think your family's strange lack of birth certificates may cause problems.

How long does it take?

I have a sneaking suspicion this thread will be moved out of Migration Issues soon

I've noticed a huge difference in the past two years. More and more employers are now insisting applicants have PR or are citizens. Even many of the big call centres aren't taking WHVs / travellers now.

Last time I stayed in Melbourne (Northern suburbs) I hated it. Now I'm back and in St Kilda, I love it.

Unless the rules have changed, Capital Gains are only payable on a second home or commercial property.

I was born and raised in the UK. I took advantage of the free education, healthcare, and tax-free profit from the sale of several properties. I left England in 2004. Does that make me a traitor to my country?

Don't know if I'd call "Mandatory Checks by External Agencies" a pathetic delay. Especially since you are from a high risk country.

Bit of a chicken and egg scenario with the accommodation and jobs. Most agents want to see proof of employment, even if it's a letter of intent, before they'll rent to you.
