  1. After nearly two years going through the visa process, thanks to multiple changes from DIAC along the way, our visas were granted. The very same day we booked one-way flights for four weeks time, handed in our notice at work and booked our leaving party venue. Those four weeks were bliss but emotional.

BUT, less than 24 hours before our flight - that's when everything went wrong. The start of our Australian adventure was going to be the worst imaginable. We received a phone call saying my partner's brother, at the age of 40, was on life support with a suspected brain haemorrhage. A few hours later he had died. It was the worst few hours possible. Speaking to his mother and father they said we should still get on the plane as it's what his brother would have wanted. It was the hardest decision ever to leave, but we did. The 24 hour flight was an opportunity to reflect on what had happened and we had some emotional moments during the trip. We found our feet quickly in Australia which was terrific but then disaster struck again six months later. We received a call saying my partner's father had died. This was the last of our awful bad luck.

Now for the good stuff. We're three months away from being able to apply for citizenship. We love Canberra. We have awesome friends and jobs. The lifestyle is amazing and we wouldn't change anything. Australia really does offer a great life. It takes some work at first, but once you're settled it's truly awesome.

It really can be AWESOME, if we can do it after everything we went through then anyone can. Just be prepared to work for it in the beginning.

  2. Aside from all the important stuff, you've picked a great place to start life in Australia. Canberra is amazing. It might not be many people's first choice, but it is great. I've been here nearly three years now and I love it. It'll be cold when you arrive but Spring will be here soon. Spring, Summer and Autumn are amazing and Winter isn't too long and actually mostly sunny (but cold). Maybe we'll catch up with you when you get here (although we fly to London tomorrow for a four week holiday - my first time back in three years since we emigrated)!!!!!

    Hi everyone!

Hubby and I are due to arrive on Tuesday the 9th :) We're going to be quite busy visiting family at first so we're not sure if we will make it, but we will try and let you know for sure nearer the time.

  4. Hello All,

I just received my PR & plan on moving to Canberra with my wife ( we are state sponsored 190 ) so just want to confirm if taking abt 10k aud would suffice till we find jobs ? Also if anyone knows of any cheap affordable location & housing such as home stays etc till we are able to get on our own feet ? Also if possible any recommended recruitment agents as I am a Credit & Collections Analyst.

    Much Appreciated !!!

You could try the big companies in the city such as ACTEW AGL.

  5. Hi,

You're gonna love it. Canberra really is great. We're having a Poms In Oz BBQ in a couple of weeks, but it's before you get here. There'll be plenty of others though.

If you have any questions when you get here just let us know!

  7. Before we say "hello" to winter, we thought it would be a nice idea to get together for a Poms In Oz BBQ.

We just moved to a great new suburb in CANBERRA called Crace which has a lovely big park with BBQs, playgrounds, toilets, basketball court, tennis wall, cricket nets and a gym area. It's perfect for a big group to get together.

As you drive in from Gundaroo Drive onto Abena Avenue, you'll see the big park on the right hand side. There's plenty of free parking on Narden Street.

Please let us know if you think you'll be coming.

    Saturday 20th April

    1pm

    Crace Park, Narden Street

    Bring plenty of food!!!!!!!

  8. [h=2]It's about time we had another Moosehead Saturday lunch meet-up in the City.

Every Saturday between 12:00 and 18:00 Mooseheads has a special offer for $10 which includes a meal (steak, schnitzel, various burgers etc) and a drink (pint, wine or soft drink). It's great value and the food is decent. The price of a pint is around $5.

We'll be there around 3pm on Saturday 24th November and everyone is welcome to join us.

The address is 105 London Circuit, City with plenty of car parking opposite and close to bus interchange.

  9. Hi All,

I'll be taking advantage of Moosehead's Saturday afternoon meal deal today if anyone wants to join me and Michael.

For $10 you get a good feed and also a pint of beer (or wine etc). It's a really good deal so come along.

We'll be there from 4pm today (the special deal is from 12 to 6pm).

If you haven't been to Mooseheads before, it's on London Circuit near the bus interchange and the London Bar. Kids are welcome during the day too.

    Cheers,

    Mark and Michael
