What Recession ? not in my trade............yet

Whats a Greek urn ?

Not a lot these days by the sound of it........It seems that Europe is still in the grip of a recession, however that dosn't seem to be the case here in Oz yet, and i hope it stays that way too. In my trade of cnc machinist there seems to be a mountain of jobs going but don't all start thinking " Yeeeeah the mines " that one still eludes me. Getting a job in the mines is like trying to become a member of the Masons, it's definately a case of not what you know but who, well that's the impression i get for the trade i am in.

However there are lots of jobs going for cnc machinists, whether your a miller or a turner, but you only stand a decent chance of securing a job if you are actually on Ozzie soil, most of the jobs are advertised on Seek.com etc but i have secured my last 3 jobs by word of mouth and not an agency, it seems they just want bums on seats to make themselves look fantastic.

So where am i going with this ? well as and when i hear of jobs in the cnc machining side of things i am going to add them to the website below in my signature, so then it's over to you.

I have posted jobs on Poms in Oz before but the posts get scattered all over the place and only a few see them before they expire so at least they will be in one place now and helping out my fellow cnc machinists.

Note to Moderator..... i am not spamming but merely trying to help out, my website is Not a job agency type site but a forum for the trade of cnc machining.

Regards and Happy Easter

As for mines. It is because although there is a skills shortage in mining, the key work is skills. There is no shortage of unskilled / unexperienced staff applying - we get thousands. But there is a huge shortage of particular skills such as engineers, geologists, jumbo operators and other specialist areas

Hy mate,

My trade is skilled yet every mine site i have applied for don't want machinists despite most saying they need them, my qualifications are above and beyond what they want for that role yet still no joy ? It does on the face of it seem that if you can drive a dump truck your in, if you can test a rock structure your in, if you can use a shovel your in, but as for the trades that actually make the machinery that digs, moves and dumps the stuff its " No thanks we're shut "

Mate PM me if you need a cnc machinist, with over 20 years experience setting operating and programming on 3,4 and 5 axis machines, i'd love to hear from you.

Have a Great Easter.

Hi, can anyone suggest the best area to move to for cnc work. I have done 10 years or so as a cnc turner programming with fanuc. All my work was for F1 and aerospace. Pretty much ran a machine shop near silverstone. Have experience with live tooling lathes. Here's the thing for the last 6yrs I've changed careers and I've been plastering and tiling and to be honest I would rather stay doing that, but what I've heard the building trade is a bit weak like the uk so I'm thinking of getting back into the engineering again. We should have an answer on my visa next week so need to make some serious decisions pretty soon. I don't want to land in Oz with my missis and kids and have no chance of work for months as I fear it will be a f##king nightmare. Thanks. Dan

Hy mate,

Can i ask if your visa was for your engineering trade or the plastering one, only reason i ask is i remember when i was going through the visa process i had been out of engineering for approx a year and the immigration said i needed to get back into engineering and fill in the gap.

Anyway in answer to your question, there is a ton of work in Queensland, i served my apprenticeship at Bae in the UK many years ago but havn't worked in the aerospace industry here. There is a company called Ferra Aerospace in Qld but i advise reading some of the threads on Poms in Oz as some people appear to have had "Not so wonderful experiences" with them, Allegedly. The majority of the engineering shops in Qld from my experiences are making parts for the mining industry, as for landing in Oz and having no chance of work for months, well this is from my personal experiences here in Queensland so don't hold me to it  i had a 1 week period in between jobs where i had no job, and that was because i decided to go and have a weeks holiday looking about the place.

I am posting jobs as and when i see them on my site below, aybe as a cnc machinist you could offer your experiences to the site.

Good Luck

Hi, thank forthe reply , I tried to use my engineering qualifications but they weren't interested as I had been out of the game for so long, although I have canned cycles and M+G codes locked in my head forever it seems as I did that much programming over the years. So I had to do a AQF 3 in plastering, a cool £2200 for the thing aswell.

i will be finding out this week if all my paper work is correct for the general skill visa and then have to wait until June before we can do our medicals as we are expecting are second child then and can't do X-rays until he is born. I will keep in contact with you over the next few weeks and see how things go. Thanks

Hi Dangreen and Heywood Monkey!! Guess what I,m a CNC miller and have worked at Ferra(Brisbane) since I came over from Derby, Uk nearly two years ago with my family(2-boys,10 and 17) I came over as a first class metal machinist(176-visa) with no job and went round cold calling after being here a few days and got offered three jobs at BDGT, Eastall Eng and Ferra and because like yourself I worked at a company in Derby that did Rolls Royce sub-contract work thought the Ferra option the best option. Sure Ferras got itself a bit of a reputation in the past as a hire/fire place but we just can,t get any decent qualified machinist at present but I feel the place has turned the corner now and our client base is mainly export to Lockheed Martin(JSF-F35 parts) and Boeing commercial(spares for 737,747,757,767) and also the Australian airforce(black hawk helicopters) I love the work, really interesting and also guess what its full of Poms, some Indians,NZ,phlippines,South Africans and even some locals!! The atmosphere is really upbeat and happy at the moment as we,ve just won Boeing International supplier of the Year(2011) which itself is no-mean fete and one we are all very proud of!!. Ourselves have settled in great as we live in Helensvale on the Gold Coast and the downside is I travel 130km(80miles!) round trip a day to and from work but what few CNC jobs that are available down here pay approx $5 less an hour and aren't Aerospace. SurfersParadise and Broadwater are 15mins down the road and theres all the Theme parks round here aswell for our kids(Wet,n,Wild,Movie World,Dream World and Sea World) Missed family and friends for the first few months but then started to really enjoy everything that Aus has got to offer. If your prepared to work hard the rewards are great I,ve found here!! If anyone on this thread wants any advice feel free to PM me with your Questions and good luck Dangreen and Nollie in your pursuits.....

Living on the Gold Coast since 2010
