The Wearing of Ugg boots in Australia

Recommended Posts

Yes, a very intellectual thread this morning.... :GEEK:

Another thread and the autumnal weather got me thinking about my beloved Ugg boots. I have two original pairs which I wore quite a bit in the UK. As most folk will know, Uggs are big in the UK and a lot of girls and women regularly wear them outdoors to go about their business.

So, my question is, is it considered OK to wear Ugg boots out in public in Australia, or are they 1) only for indoors, 2) only for... Bogans/Housos? 3) OK as long as you are only nipping out to the local shops 4) something else?

I have tried researching on the internet and generally it seems the opinions gear towards 2 or 3.

What do you think? Is it time to put my Uggs on Ebay or use them as very expensive slippers???

And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive at where we started, and know the place for the first time.

Well I am in two minds how to answer this...given its feckn 30c again so Ugg boots are out of the question. I cant imagine anywhere in Oz where you would need em. However, given my propensity for silliness...I wear mine while "in flagrante"...some people smoke, i could wear my socks, but that would be so British, so to be an Ozzie I wear Ugg boots...and to avoid potential frost bite....and toe sucking.

OK, sell em I think you get my opinion ridiculous things, but then I wear crocs..so shoot me....but seriously they are 'ugg'ly and look tatty when worn out...i say Ebay here you come...good luck with this mind boggling decision....

Nah, the Jury is still out... reckon it will get cold enough up in the Blue Mountains to warrant actually wearing them.

Thanks for the mental imagery though!!!

Australia is the inventor of the Ugg boot, despite the yanks thinking they invented them.

I wear mine in winter but ONLY around the house, I have the short slipper type, so wearing them out in public is a no no for me.

But the long boots, the original Ugg's are ok to wear out in public.

Was in Hawaii recently and the UGG shop on Wakiki had a continuous queue of Japs down the street from 8am to 11pm every day for 2 weeks I was there. They are mad for them.

In Australia they are considered as slippers although the wife wears the high ones when we go to the Blue Mountains in winter to visit her Gran.

I would say wear them in house but I see lots of long ones on kids in the winter

They are fine for popping round to shops also

Surfers wear them here on the Beaches in Sydney as after they come out of the water in winter their toes are cold

I think they were the original wearers in Aus

Never seen the attraction myself but my niece paid a fortune for a pink pair when she was out on holiday. My son and his mates wear them quite a bit in winter but only when they go surfing or training and they know they are going to get cold.

Thanks for all the replies so far, yes I think Uggs are a love them or hate them thing.

I love mine!

Am now contemplating wearing my long pair into Sydney one day and see what reactions I get... :wideeyed:

You'd need them in Canberra in winter when it's below zero and bloody cold.

I buy cheap imatation ones and wear them indoors to keep my feet and calves warm. I probably wouldn't go out in them, I have prettier boots to wear outdoors.

Well given that I have just ordered a pair of the darn things I am going to wear them outside for everyone to see Mm ..... obviously I hope not to offend anyone, but if I do then whoops sorry, after going through the hassle of justifying the cost of these hideously looking but rather warm and cuddly boots I am bloody well going to wear them  apparently they all wear them around here in the winter, but maybe they mean´t in the house whoops

I have a pair I wear inside and others I wear if I am going to visit family or pop to the local shops but I wouldn't wear them anywhere else.

They were the sensation of 1978 suburban Australia and the teenagers all wore them to the local skating rink and back. God knows how they ended up as New York fashion :)

Before you shake you head and say that you knew I had links to Moe, I have never been there! The reason that I know of it is due to my name sake contacting me on FB and requested to be friend. I though "why not" and pressed OK. After a few posts anti Immigrant and racist post I realised what Ozzies mean by "Bogan" hell he even has a Mullet!

I dont personally like them but my daughter has a pair, I think they look OK with jeans but seeing a 40 something woman in them with shorts is a bit questionable IMO!

At the end of the day though if I liked them and was comfortable in them I would wear them in or out regardless....thats the best bit about Oz you can wear what you like theres always someone else that looks more of a state than you, lol. Who cares what anyone thinks!

They are considered as slippers in Australia and perhaps only for Bogans? Since they have become so popular over here I also wear them everywhere in the winter months. However I am yet to decide whether my comfy and very warm uggies will be worn in Oz while out and about...I think my family may disown!
