OMG - they must be shocked when they come in here! There is no way Im cleaning up for them, no way!! The house is tidy anyway but thats it!!

Im so tempted at this stage to just pack up the kids (1 and 3 also) and pack a few suitcases and leave the rest behind!

I always say I won't clean for them and end up scrubing the house..! :-(

i emailed John Mason, I swear that is the last survey in my

life!!!

No quote from ACe or Crown yet! What a shower! I am not chasing them, well not yet anyway! Would you believe my DH has sold his car, to his sister and Im being advised I would sell mine no problem - not too sure about that! I was told by both crown and Ace that i would fit all the household stuff and one car in a 20ft container so do you really need a 40ft?

Had lovely girl in from Careline yesterday and she has quoted me 4500 for a 20ft. I dont need the full 20ft but if I bring everything and replace pots and pans and buy santa toys here etc before I go (cos they so expensive there) then this may be the best option! Are they a good company???

hi, i received a quote from Moveplus, from wexford to perth, and it came in at €6,570 plus insurance and the quarantine inspection fee of $550, it was for a 20ft. did any moving companies tell you that pottery and porcelain tableware would require inspection & tested by customs upon arrival in Australia as they are on the restricted goods list? Moveplus didn't say anything to me, I came across it on the Customs website, but got worried would simple kitchen ware end up costing me with tests & inspections in Australia....

Hi Sinead , have you tried McGimpsey ( sp?) brothers I found Catrionna from their office very nice and helpful, didn't go with them Only because I am from Dublin and that made them more expensive! They are based in NI -Bangor( I think).

This is a freight forwarder and not a remover. By the time you have paid the cost of getting the goods packed up, prepared for shipment and to their warehouse and then paid seperately in Melbourne for customs clearance and delivery in Australia you will end up paying the same if not more than with a conventional remover who actually know the pitfalls of shipping vehicles and household effects to Oz. You would also not be able to get door to door insurance on the above scenario.

Thats good info that I was unaware of. Thanks.

Thing is, I would be far more comfortable and would have no problem with packing my own stuff and getting it to the container in Dublin and would be very minimal cost to be with access to a van and packing consumables.

Why would I need door to door insurance as opposed to just insurance whilst its locked in a container?

Excuse my ignorance but can you collect your stuff from the port or what is the common practice?

What are peoples opinions on sharing containers?

hi all, i moved with AMC removals back in Nov 2011 for our move to Sydney. They were excellent, we didn't have any problems at all , no damages, price was very fair. Sue in the office was excellent she was very helpful and really put us at ease for our move

I agree with oldmaried, think it is going to cost you more to do it yourself, 20 ft container will be no more than €4000 to Melbourne plus ALL the extras! And the right company will help you with the paper work as well and def they will make it less stressful , that's my opinion anyway :)

The goods go through considerable stresses during the transit and sometimes, no matter how well they are packed, they will end up damaged. The shipping lines have very limited liability. Each has their own terms but on average if the container was dropped and everything within it destroyed the payout would be circa $500 which is not a lot for a container full of household goods, average value 30,000 euro. Most people think they don't have they much but honestly when you sit down and work out how much you spent on every pair of socks, pants etc etc it soon mounts up, especially if you have to replace it unexpectantly. Removers also have limited liability for a whole load of reasons which I won't bore you with. In addition to the risk of damage to the goods there is also the risk of damage to the vessel they sail on. In the event of marine catastrophe the cost of attempting to rescue the vessel and its cargo is shared amongst the cargo owners. If the captain is anything like the Costa Concordia that can work out pretty expensive! So you should take out marine insurance which covers these things.

You might easily obtain a van and materials but if you have the goods packed by a professional company, frankly it does not cost that much more and you get the full insurance cover.

You cannot enter the port in Australia to collect your goods. Before the goods can be released they must clear customs and Aqis. In the case of household goods this means moving them from the quay to a licensed facility under the supervision of a licensed broker where they can receive the necessary inspection. Most of the big removal companies have the right facility for household goods. If you get a price at this end for a door to door service you have room to negotiate. If you rock up in Australia and look for a broker you end up paying more because you are a captive audience, they know you cannot do it yourself and will have to have it cleared by them.

If you are set on doing it as cheap as possible and are prepared to carry the risk of insurance then pack it yourself and deliver it to the warehouse of a shipper. Then ask them to ship it to "cleared and hand out warehouse". This means they will deal with the arrival and customs/aqis issues and you will then pick it up from their warehouse when it is cleared. But use a professional international remover who specialises in household goods because they understand the process which is quite different from commercial goods deal with by a freight forwarder. Look for a member ofFIDI as they are audited externally every 2 years by Ernst & Young to test that they have the right facilities and do actually know what they are talking about.
