Hi all, my fiance and i are thinking of moving to oz with our two boys, aged 4 and 7 months. We have had a look on the web and the houses are more expensive in areas like sydney, melbourne and perth. We were wondering where is the best place to live to get the most with our money. Ideally 4 or 5 bedroom with a pool.

Hi and welcome to the forum. There are lots of things to consider ie where the work is, how far you want to commute etc.

In Melbourne if you go around 30 - 50min from the city you would be looking between $350 - $500 rent per week, but you probably won't find one with a pool. I believe Perth is expensive , maybe look at Queensland.

There are lots of public pools around (and I mean LOTS) so if you're after an affordable house then I wouldn't make it a requirement.

We're paying $340 a week in Narre (not a posh suburb, but we're in a nice area) which is ~50mins out from the CBD on the train for a 3 bed house with a decent garden in a nice quiet street 5-10mins walk to the station and shops.

It's got air-con in a couple of rooms and polished floors, and it's got a great workshop for Jon to play in :)

Do you have a visa is the first question. Then, it will depend a lot on what job you do as to where you might be best living

Absolutely right and you will find that the places where your money will go further in accommodation may well be places where you wont get a job (assuming you can get a visa in the first place). Get the job then the house will fall into place.

A lot of new migrants have found that they have had to revise their expectations of housing once they arrive in Australia - 4/5 beds plus pool are expensive almost anywhere where people want to live and need to work
