Guest AKA63029
You may have just struck unlucky matey. I was 'reported' to the local council for my one and only tree hanging over the footpath within three weeks of arriving. Wouldn't have minded that much, but as it was a Lemon tree and EVERY Lemon got nicked it was in my opinion a public service bearing in mind the price of Lemons back then. Not the same I know, but try not to let it influence you too much. Cheers Tony.
Guest The Pom Queen
You must have been really unlucky, touch wood we have only ever had the sat nav stolen but that was in Melbourne and we left the car/house doors unlocked all the time. The only other thing was the car being spray painted in Karingal

2tigers
Just because your in Australia doesn't mean that crime doesn't happen..... when I was there I had bottles thrown at my gates on a regular basis, was a nightmare when we are in the car, open the gates and there it was again, smashed glass everywhere. I had my car stolen and torched in a creek, I was very upset - it had baby seats in and a pram in the boot. My ex MIL had her purse whipped out of her handbag at the mall..... Where we lived was horrible I didn't like it at all....
JoandJon
A work van was stolen from somewhere in Victoria a few weeks back after a house break-in, but was then miraculously abandoned by the thieves completely untouched (and not torched) with all it's contents a day or two later. Think they might have been rather alarmed by what they saw in the back and panicked! Glad the thieves didn't torch it - that would have been a major headache for my work! boganbear
It can happen anywhere but crime is generally much lower in the Uk and it seems to me the Police do a much better job and actually catch criminals and the courts lock them up instead of giving them a slap on the wrist. However, it is pretty stupid to leave a wallet in the car. you wouldn't do it in the Uk so why do it here?
Johndoe
17 yrs here and the only thing that's happened to us is being egged. 2kms away and it's a different story...............you only need a couple of "bad eggs" in any susburb to give the impression that there's a problem with crime in that area generally. The odds are, in the OP's case, that it's an "isolated" individual who, once he's caught, the crime rate will drop considerably. It happened in one particular part of my suburb where there was constant break-ins over a period of 6 months. It was only when social services got on a truancy case, that the individual playing truant was found to be the culprit................the "explosion" in crime was down to one persononly and stopped the moment he was sussed. When we go to the beach we leave our wallet in the car Well I would. In the Uk I had my car broken into a couple of times and the only thing they stole was a couple of CDs in the glove box so ever since then I leave nothing of value in the car whatsoever even in the boot. I always take the sat nav, leads, CDs with me and leave nothing on display. Never had the car broken into since. In the Uk your car insurance is invalidated if you leave a mobile phone in the car and I think it is the same here. You are right that you shouldn't need to do it but in reality no one should steal either.

ali
Sorry to hear that, sadly minor and major crime happens everywhere, we excercise the same precautions as we did in the UK, doesn't make us exempt but at least they won't nick anything of value
