Advice on applying for visa

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and have discovered so much information here but wondered if someone could offer some advice.

We're in the early stages of trying to decide if we should move to oz but I'm not sure I would be granted a visa. I have a qualification that is included on the SOL list but I have been working in a different occupation for the past 4 years. I think that I need to have worked in the Skilled Occupation for at least the past 2 years to qualify - is this correct and of so is there any way around it?

Thanks

You're correct, you need to have worked in your skilled occupation for at least 12 of the last 24 months. As for whether there's any way round it - it depends on the skill I think. The computing descriptions can be quite widely interpreted, whereas something more tradie couldn't be. You'd probably need the help of a mara registered agent to figure out if there's any way to show you qualify...

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Would getting a job offer from a company in oz make any difference to the work experience issue do you think? The skill listed on the SOL that I have is laboratory scientist.

Thanks.

Hi

The lab scientist on the skills list is only relevant if you sit the relevant exam in London through the Australian institute of medical scientists(AIMS). Have your skills assessed without doing the exam and you will be awarded a medical lab technician.

My wife is a scientist with loads of qualifications and experience and was awarded med lab tech not on SOL but was on the SOL south australia.

You might get state sponsorship, like we did, if you highlight your skills and experiences. We found this a lot easier rather than looking at the SOL.

Thanks for that John.

I understand so far that I would need to sit an IELTS test, get my qualification approved by the AIMS (presumably they would decide if I had to sit the exam?) then apply for visa possibly via state sponsorship - is that right?

Thanks.

Hi

That is correct. You only need to sit the ielts if you require the extra points as a British passport holder doesnt need an ielts as they meet the threshold for English.

You quals need to be assessed by aims and I believe anyone not sitting the exam is awarded the med lab tech regardless of experience.

State sponsorship is the easiest route but the lists can change overnight. We had SS and had to decline it only to reapply 3 weeks later, and we got it again.

South Australia seem to have themed lab techs in demand right now.

Hi John,

Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure about the ielts though as it says on the AIMS assessment form that all applications must include a copy of an ielts test result with a score of at least 7 and that there are no exceptions to this rule. Maybe they've changed this recently?

Either way it's worth a go - thanks for your guidance

Hi

We emigrated to Adelaide in May 2010 and you gave us heaps of help and advice with our visa which were so grateful and now live in Glenelg North and doing good. The reason for contacting you is friends of ours have a visa dilema and if you dont mind we will give you a brief lowdown on their situation:

Chris has lived here (in Adelaide) for 25+ years and kept in touch with a girl (Sharon) back in his home town of Burnley all these years. Last May he visited England and met up with Sharon and to cut a long story short 'fell in love'. She has since been over to Australia twice and is currently here now on a 3 month holiday visa. She desperately wants a permanent visa and we were wondering if you could advise which is the best visa to apply for and how to go about it ?

Many thanks,

David

If you are planning to marry within the next 9 months there is the 300 visa (Prospective Marriage).
