Guest Soph and Ju
Hi all, just in the process of getting my 9 month old son his passport as we are planning a holiday back to the Uk in about 5/6 months time. Myself, husband and daughter moved here from the uk nearly 3 years ago so have our uk passports, my son was born here...my question is how do I go about getting him a dual nationality passport? Someone mentioned I could do this, so he has a passport in both countries...any one have any advice on this? Do I have to apply for a passport in both countries, so my son will have to carry 2 passports, or is it all on the one passport??

tisme
I would only bother with the Oz one for now. Just extra expense getting both, you can always get the UK one later if he wants it.
RockDr
If you're travelling back to the UK as a family, it will get questioned at UK immigration that you're entering the UK on UK passports except for your son who is clearly also a UK citizen. While most dual citizens do get away with it, international law does state that you're supposed to enter and leave a country of which you are a citizen, on that country's passport. Personally I will be maintaining both passports, as I do travel back to europe on a fairly regular basis.

Just go an Australian Post office and ask for application forms for passports. We got our daughters Aussie one first then her uk one a few months later. It is pretty straightforward. Not sure about a dual one this was not mentioned to us, you can call the number on the passport application form or their website to enquire. tisme
No question will be asked as it will clearly state on his passport he is a citzen of Australia and using an Oz passport. I have traveled extensively throughout Europe and the UK, and through Asia, on both passports and found it made no difference which one I used in Europe or the UK. When my Brit passport expires I won't be bothered renewing it again.
tisme
Just a thought, if you do want to get him a UK passport, get it while your in the UK, much cheaper.
sussex boy
Good post, we sent of and recieved a Uk passport for our son who was born here in the Nt, Was thinking that since we were on a 457 at the time that it wouldn`t be possible to gain an Australian passport for him, anyone have a clue? RockDr
sussex-boy, you're correct, if your son was born in Australia while you were on a temporary visa, then he's not an australian citizen, hence doesn't qualify for an australian passport. Guest tholcroft
When my children were born in Germany many years ago, we got each of them a consular birth certificate. We then go them added to our UK passports.
