Is it worth bringing my car? The Iron Lady's trusty new calculator reveals all!

Hoping to get my partner visa in February and come to Australia as soon as possible after that. Trying to work out whether it is worth shipping my car.

Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost Zetec 3 door with air-con bought July 2013 and in good condition with 8000 miles. Bought for £13000. Looks as though I could sell for £8500 to £9000 in UK.

EcoBoost engine is Ford's fuel efficient 3 cylinder engine. Currently the only Australian model with this engine is a Sports Fiesta released about a year ago costing around A$20000 second hand.

Would like to keep the fuel efficiency if the economics for shipping work out, rather than go for a similar spec normal engine e.g. Ambient version, which seems to be available for around A$16000.

Resale value not really an issue as would plan to keep the car for many years.

I assume that if Ford are selling a car with that type of engine in Australia that servicing would not be an issue?

Any advice and guidance welcome.

We did get the Fiesta with the Ecoboost here, so servicing won't be a problem. Fairly borderline financially I'd say, but if you're happy with it and planning to keep it, then it's probably worth looking at.

Hi, any thoughts on:

VW Passat 2.0TDI 58 plate

Leather,

Aircon

6 speed Manual

front wheel drive

body - sedan

full dealer history

100,000 miles

redbook private guide $13K-$15K

trade-in $10-£12

UK price £4K-£5K

I probably know the answer, but it is a very reliable motor!

It's line ball, really, in terms of cost, although it's worth noting it may be hard to find a manual/diesel/leather combo in the cars we got here. Might be worth considering.

Probably not worth taking but..

- Year of manufacture: 2008

- Make, model & variant: Hyundai Coupe SIII

- Body type: Coupe

- Engine size & fuel type: 2.0 Petrol

- Transmission: Manual

- Drive type (4WD, front wheel drive, etc): Front wheel drive

- Mileage: 56,000 miles

- Any special features, options or modification: Cruise control, heated red leather seats (Hugh Heffner)

- Does it have aircon: Yes... I think?! I'll check tomorrow.

- Realistic current UK market value: £4,000

- Australian RedBook value: $35,000 (this means from new though I think...the carsales.au site nearest matches to age and mileage were about $10-18k)

- Which Australian state/city: QLD

It's a very good looking car but unless Hyundai are big in Aus I'll struggle for parts if it breaks and the economy is woeful. It might be called the Tiburon over there.

Cheers

Hi! My apologies, I must have received a notification about this but missed it in the chaos leading up to Christmas. It's fairly line ball, so it's up to you really. Bear in mind we never got the manual diesel variant here, so if you like shifting your own gears, best to bring it over.

Hi Iron Chef,

Have been reading the posts, very interesting.

I was hoping you might be able to help with a price pointer, I tried the website but had a SQL dev error instead of the form, probably my PC.

One thing I am curious about is amount of cars? I'm not a vehicle trader and have no intention of selling but I have two cars that I would like to bring but would be moving over on my own, unless I meet an Elle/Melissa George lookalike ;-)

I also Have a couple of bikes I'd like to bring if they could be slung in the box too?

Hope this in enough information for you to go on.

Hi Garrant,

That's a very cool list of vehicles! As the current rules stand, you'd be ok with the bikes, but only one of the cars could be street registered (the other could come as a track car possibly). Both cars would fetch reasonable money here, so it's really a matter of personal choice. Or find yourself a partner so you can import one of the cars in her (or his, to be politically correct!) name. Miranda Kerr might be an option for you, I suspect she's single at the moment...

Hi Iron Chef,

Thanks for replying, most appreciated.

Thanks, you might tell the "Henrys" are quite important, I wasn't actually looking for another but when I saw the Focus in the dealership, in the same colour as the Ninjas, I had to have it, and now I find myself with an even bigger task for importing, I have a little 306 runabout too but it's worth less than the UK road tax so she can stay behind and keep a friend company.

I have had a nice email chat with Iain yesterday and He said the Cossie could probably be brought over on a SEVS import as it would be classed as an enthusiasts car. We had a look on the link and she is listed on the index and specifically on the 459-00 form, so that looks positive. If she still can't be registered for road use, I'll have to get a very heavy duty Mantle piece built in the lounge to put her on as a rather dear ornament.

Here are the links, just in case anyone is in a similar boat, or remotely interested.

Hmm, Miranda Kerr? Yeah, She's quite Cute

Thanks again Mate, very appreciated, hopefully we can sort something out in the near future.

Hi Garrant,

I was interested in reading your Post but I have to say that although the Cossie is on the SEVS list, there is no Registered Automotive Workshop that is currently authorised to comply the Cossie. Go to: http://raws.infrastructure.gov.au/ and on the LHS go to the tab, Search for a RAW. This shows you which workshops can comply which cars and at the moment, no one is doing them. To actually get one on their list costs a RAWS many thousands of dollars so one would be unlikely to comply it for you but they could apply to bring it in as a Sample vehicle but then you could never register it unless you got the RAWS to fully comply it.

Your Ford Focus RS LV was sold in Australia in limited numbers and so a replacement could be found such as:

http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Ford-Focus-2010/AGC-AD-17095685/?Cr=7

Which would leave you free to import the Cossie as your Personal Import with the bikes. As the Cossies are pretty rare in Australia, this is the only 4 door for sale:

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Ford-Sierra-1988/SSE-AD-2617341/?Cr=0

I know Iron Chef will look after you, whatever you manage to bring over.

Based on those numbers, that's worth bringing over. XFs are good buying at the moment in the UK (don't be surprised if you get hit even harder on depreciation if you sold it in the UK too).

My apologies, I skipped over you Dai!

I would consider bringing the Forester (especially if you've done work to it!) but with the Audi, only bring it if you're attached to it. I'm surprised the Aussie value is so low on them!

Welcome to PIO! On those numbers it makes sense to bring it. Worth noting that we never got the manual diesel combo here either, so if you prefer shifting your own gears, then bringing it makes sense.

Hey Iron Chef,

would really value your advice!

we were set to sell our cars ready for our move to Brisbane in August/September and have since heard that each person can have one car sent to australia from the UK without paying import tax. Is this correct do you know? If so, based on our car details below would it be worth bringing them (or one) with us, bearing in mind whether parts and repairs are straightforward for the models:

CAR ONE

Audi A6 S line TDI 2011 plate. Lots of upgrades went for went bought - including A/C and sat nav (can this be changed to Australia?!?!). It's a 2l diesel. Done around 110000 miles.

CAR TWO

BMW 1 series M sport, 2l diesel. 2007 plate - done around 80000 miles - some upgrades incl A/C.

Would be taking them/ one to QLD.

One more Q if that's alright- what would we have to do to register the car on arrival? Would we need to change the plates, get a roadworthy certificate etc?ttyibg to work out additional costs of taking a car other than just shipping and import tax (if relevant)

Thanks for taking the time out to answer Qs from newbies like us!

Hi Karl,

Unfortunately you will pay tax on cars as they come into the country. The A6 will be worth bringing over, the 1 series is probably a little more marginal in terms of benefit, but I suspect it would be fairly close, so if you like it, then it's worth considering.

Contact us via the website for a complete breakdown of costs.

When the cars arrive in Qld, they generally need minor modifications, and an engineer to sign off on the roadworthiness. We generally allow around $900 for the process in our quotes, but that varies from state to state and car to car.

Hi is it worth bringing a 2008 Citroen C4 grand picasso? Automatic diesel 1.6 from Ireland? and any ideas on the cost? We'd be going to Perth.

Cheers

Unless you're planning to pack it in a container with your household furniture and other stuff, I'd suggest leaving it behind. All the vessels go from Southampton, and the additional cost to get it there from Ireland makes it fairly marginal when compared with selling and buying another one here.
