6 weeks in Oz

Well I got back after a trip from mid December till this last weekend and I went to most major ports of call but would like to see much more.

Sydney was very nice and seemed a nice pace of life and very nice and clean. Very international from an Asian point of view but doesn’t bother me. Housing seems very expensive and but transport was good and the towns or areas out of the city were developed and had things to do.

Melbourne again very nice and the city I would say more quirky and interesting than Sydney but cooler and weather isn’t predictable. Beaches were a long drive due to it being a massive bay (if you wanted to go to the sea anyway).

Not bad though and liveable although I preferred Sydney. Transport was good again and housing was equally astronomical. Everywhere had pokie machines and I mean everywhere, there must be massive gambling problem there, maybe I didn’t notice it in Sydney as much??

Gold Coast: Basically a holiday resort and great for a holiday although Brisbane was very nice and the climate was the best of all. People were the friendliest I’d say but then its more catered for tourists. Not much opportunity compared to the rest of Oz for work (from my point of view as I’m an engineer)

Perth. Very hot, nice beaches, very expensive. Much less developed in terms of things to do and as they all say it is such a long way from anywhere and Perth isn’t that big. People were not as friendly but there’s a lot of work and opportunities.

Housing was stupidly priced especially for what you get in what areas; I’m talking of $750K for a small house in an average area. Anything less is a shed or in a dump. (I maybe extreme here but the areas are like black n white). You can rent in a good area but it costs.

Perth is not so populated so even though housing is crammed in to small areas, when you’re out and about you get a big sense of space and they drive sooooo slowly all over Oz. Still all pleasant though and liveable.

Meals out were pretty low quality and I found Perth lacks things to do and there’s a lack of facilities outside the city. You see a sign for a shopping centre of the centre of an area and all it is is an estate agent, supermarket like a co-op, a Chinese or Thai, a hungry jacks and red rooster fast food outlet.

Cars were just silly money too but less LPG than the rest of OZ, maybe fuel is cheaper and it is pretty cheap.

I think you get a bigger house and land for your money in the UK when considering area than in Oz.

Generally in Oz it’s like going back in time in many aspects in terms of services and entertainment but on the other side of that it is more relaxed and the salaries do equal the cost of things so after a year or so you wouldn’t think things were costing a lot.

Where the pain comes in if you’re selling in the UK and buying in Oz. UK is bottom and OZ is right at the top. I would say things will swing the other way again in 10 years as it has done a few times so best to keep what you have in the UK and rent but that is just my plan.

Still optomistic on giving it a go as generally its OK to live there or it seems so.

This was very much an overview and only from what i saw in my opinion. We werent there long enough to get into it properly but will find out. I cant say there are pros and cons but especially when looking at material aspects and this will effect lifestyle. Seems fine and good enough to give it a try so why not

I must say.. I am getting slightly nervous the more I hear people going on about how expensive Perth is. Perhaps a bit of naivety on my part but I just assumed that all the major cities would be much the same on prices but it seems Perth is getting branded as the most expensive!!
