Please can anyone tell me which areas are the nicest to live in, need to be near a primary school. Thinking of Rockingham, Secret Harbour or Halls Head, also the costs of rentals in these areas. Any info will help Louise
regan
Hi Louise We're are looking at Halls head due to visa requirements. We have a 6yr old and 4yr old and halls head has primary schools within walking distance. Secret harbour is lovely but still getting established. From what I've heard, it has everything you need to get by. Regan
LOUISE RHODES
Hi Regan Thanks for the info, we have friends in Halls Head and they love it there. We were thinking of Secret Harbour as its nearer to job opportunities for my husband, he is a fabricator/boilermaker. I researched Secret Harbour primary school and it said 47% of school children are from the UK, that is a lot of families in this area from the UK. Halls Head schools have a good report and fairly new too. Louise
bensdad
Halls heads is lovely but you are down in mandurah. People often knock rocking ham and it's surrounding areas but tbh we have found it to be really nice. Obviously there's good and bad everywhere. Baldivis and Wellard are nice as well, so is singleton. Loving Fremantle!
LOUISE RHODES
Hi Bensdad Thank you for that, yes mandarah seems further out than we wanted but we could have support from friends there. My hubby just does not want to spend 1 to 1 1/2 hrs on the road before a days work. I see you are in fremantle, do a lot of families live in that area and do you know if there are local primary schools. Asking as many jobs are in the fremantle area for my husband, i also would like to look at work opportunities in childcare assistants. Info of any kind would be great. Guest Chasing Sunsets
Currently in Rockingham due to a bad decision in areas. Chavy is the word I would use ! Secret Harbour is beautiful but far out from the city Where will your hubby be working?
bensdad
I'm in Hamilton hill , by manning park there's lots of families here. every weekend the kids are out in the park etc it's really nice. It's a bit cheaper than Freo itself. There are worse parts of Hamilton hill but manning park precinct area is fine. A 4x2 low set will cost approx $550-600k on a plot about 750-850m2. We rent for $500 per week. Not sure bout schools as we have no children here with us I will ask my friend and get back to you. I work just north of the CBD and it takes me approx 40 mins to get to work I can go the freeway or along the ocean works out the same both ways. Loving Fremantle! Que Sera Sera
We are currently living in SH and we love it, we are building on Lakelands as it is cheaper and closer to the OH's work in Mandurah. You will find lots of work for Boilermaker/Welder in Kwinana which is a 30 minute drive from SH, look at Baldivis too a lovely area and nearer to Kwinana. Good Luck. Oh by the way there are two primarys in SH one is called Secret Harbour Primary and the other Comet Bay Primary. Expect to pay between 400 to 500 dollars per week rent, and you can buy from $400,000 to $2 million
VERYSTORMY
Been in Mandurah 4 years - 10km south of Halls Head. Personaly i would give all three a miss. There are big UK communities in all three. But that is not necessarily a good thing. We found Rockingham to be very chavi. Secret Harbour a bit of a sprawling estate and Hall Head also a bit chavi (it is one of the areas that police get called to for out of control parties). There are some very nice areas of HH, but they are mainly on the canals and have big multi million dollar houses. The beach at HH is very nice. I would have a look at Erskine, Falcon, Dawesville and Mandurah itself.

We really don`t want to be in a area with parties as we currently live in quiet area and we want to move to oz to learn about Australia and its culture. Nothing against us brits but if i wanted to live in a uk environment then i would stay in uk. Rockingham as had quite a lot of bad reviews and Iam surprised there is bad parts of Halls Head. Do you know what Baldivis is like, falcon and erskine look ok, I need walking distance to primary school though. We really would like to settle in a area that suits us and the children, we don`t want to keep changing schools. It is such a hard decission. tisme
EVERY suburb has it's not so nice residents, just tonoght on the news there was a young lad too scared to go back to Halls Head school due to bullying. Rockingham is a lovely place to live, most people who 'bag' Rockingham have never lived there or have only ever seen a small part of the area. Suburbs in Rockingham include Baldivis and Secret Harbour along with Port Kennedy, Warnbro, Waikiki, Safety Bay, Cooloongup, Rockingham Beach, Palm Beach, and The Meadows. I have lived in the area for many years and wouldn't live anywhere else. There are plenty of good schools, pristine beaches, I could go on and on. Nowhere in the world is without the odd idiot hell bent on making life for others not so pleasant. Take a good look around when you arrive and make your mind up then. LOUISE RHODES
Thanks tisme, very good advice. We will wait till we arrive as we can stay with friends till we find a area to settle and it all depends on hubbys job. Most of the work in his criteria is in the rockingham/kwinana area or welshpool, this depends what sort of job he decides to do. Do you know if companys mind you getting in touch via emails from the UK prior to arriving. Thanks Louise
tisme
I don't see why they would mind. What line of work is he looking for???

Guest Anita in uk
Hi Louise, me my husband and 2 children (6&8) moved to Australia in oct 2011, we are renting in Baldivis. It was a very hard decision to make as we wanted the correct location for our two little girls, they are our priority. Baldivis is a lovely family friendly suburb with plenty of parks to exercise and play in. My girls go to Settlers Hill primary school, although it is a very large school they have loved it from day one. In the UK we lived in a small village si i was initialy concerned. Dont be put off with living amongst other brits as to be perfectly honest you will welcome their friendlyness! It came as a great surprise to us but Aussies in general are not as 'friendly and open' as the british are but i will let you be the judge of that. Rentals in Baldivis are in general around the $400 mark per week. Baldivis is a popular area so they are in high demand! We love it here and have just bought some land to build on, We wish you all the best and are sure you will make the right decision. x
LOUISE RHODES
Hi Anita, sorry if i sounded like i didn`t want to know other brits. Its just ive heard so many stories of people being unhappy, moaning and bad crime in some areas. I suppose i should not listen to the bad things and concentrate on all the positive things that have made my decision to move. Baldivis would proberly be 1 on the list for us, i dont drive so can you tell me if the primary school is walkable. Also how far is it to the beach and is there a bus you can get. Thanks Louise
Guest Chasing Sunsets
Baldivis is lovely. The transport network in Perth is very good. I would definitely leave Rockingham off the list. The local school is appalling ! Classes of 60 in some year groups ! Worst mistake we could of made moving here. No disrespect to some of the lovely people that live here, however everyones standards are very different. Rockingham was on national tv a few weeks ago about the gang culture here ! Nice

Nice Baldivis is in Rockingham. There are approximately 18 public and approx. 6 private schools in Rockingham, which school are you refering to? and if you mean 60 in one class, I very much doubt that, I cannot see any teacher agreeing to be in control of and teach 60 children on a full time basis. Where have you got this information from??? If your that unahppy living in Rockingham why not consider moving??? I wouldn't believe ALL you hear in the media, they are well known for sensationalizing a story to get the viewers to watch their crap. I've lived in Rockingham for many years and have NEVER noticed or been bothered with a gang culture.

Guest Chasing Sunsets
Tisme, chav is the same as bogan just with a different accent and maybe less shoes. As for schools as you are probably aware the are certain schools you are able to apply for within your catchment. I can assure you that my child is in a class of 60 in a school that it turns out does not even supply the children with hand soap ! So yes you are right there are many schools here and don't worry my child will be moving however it appears that if you want a decent education you need to pay private. I will be moving as soon soon as my lease allows me. Only in Rockingham or the Nam as some people refer to it as have in the space of 2 months seen a man having a w**k outside a supermarket on a Sunday afternoon and various other incidents that would make your air curl. I'm not from some snobby place in the UK however this place takes the biscuit ! I just guess that other peoples standards are maybe not as high some!!! tisme
I do know what a Chav is, as I said similar sh!t different country. Not all schools do provide soap, or toilet paper or tissues, some of these items are included in the book lists handed out to each student and are stock piledat the beginning of the year to be used through out the year. As for the 60 children in one class. I cannot believe not one parent has questioned this or even the teacher him/herself allows it, any number above the reccommended number per class has to be agreed upon by the teaching staff and the Principal. Years 4-7 the recommended number of students per class is 32. Years 1-3 is 24 students. These recommendations were set by the Teachers Union. You can apply to the Education Department to cross boundaries and send your child to another school. Your can break your lease, with minimal or no extra expense, you can advertise yourself for a tenant to take over your lease, and on Gumtree this is free, and you say your going to move anyway so why not do it sooner?? You have a lot of options to change your circumstances. some people always see the glass as half empty, I always see the glass as half full.
