You do now, you can buy a short term pass in any state, but the annual pass that now becomes the summer pass half way thrugh year is now only allowed for QLD and North NSW.

Apparently they heard that someone in Victoria purchased a pass and did not use it.....

Think its a similar range to bravissimo Kate, looks good, will check it out. Is it just me or do those curvy girls look a whole lot more fun than the twiglets that usually advertise lingerie. Give me curves anyday.

some aussie pals seperate groups returned from uk and rave about how cheap it is in the uk.

thats good enough for me, primark and other stores, also the choices in supermarkets they enjoyed ( easy to amuse some ) lol.

nearest here is K,mart.

love the comment on the gratton catalogue. I used to look forward to the Argos book coming out, waiting in store for your number to flash up and getting your goods made

me feel I won a raffle or something :goofy:

The reason things were so cheap for your Aussie friends is because of the exchange rate, if you are buying things in pounds its just as dear as Australia.

I would question your electric bill, especially off peak.

I have a large house with large pool pump (Ikw) running a minimum of 8hrs a day. Two fridges and two freezers. 32 fish tanks with 500 watts of pumps running 24/7 and 1kw of lighting 5/7. A boy who showers 3 times a day for a minimum of 20 minutes each time, and 3 others who shower twice daily. I also have 3kws of tanks heaters that come on and off intermittently when the temp drops below 26d. I consider the previous to be well above average household consumption and yet my bill is only $1100.

Good post fella.

It doesn't make sense to keep comparing exchange rates unless you are going on holiday or thinking of moving back to the UK.

But this is the internet age. It does make sense to keep comparing if you have the option to pay in Aus$, US$, Sterling or Euro depending on which online site you buy from.

I'm sure Perth is the capital of an area at least 4 times the size of the UK

Yes but unless they've started giving credit cards to the kangaroos an camels that doesn't count for anything in consumer prices. The shipments from China to WA are much smaller than those to the UK's container ports. Not only does London have a population 8 times that of Perth but a cargo landed in Felixstowe or Rotterdam can be transhipped all over Europe - a market with a population over 100 times that of WA. Bulk buying keeps prices down.

No ,, we have a pretty large pool that runs an average of 8 hours a day, we are a family of 4 and also have a large garage/workshop but havent in the 5 years of being here had a bill over approx $550. We are all electric too, no solar or Gas. Its only this last couple of bills since the power charge rises that its crept into the $500s up until then we seemed to hover around the $450 mark.

Cal x

Hi Cal

i wonder why your bills are almost half that of one or two others who have posted?

Here in the uk its similar everywhere, dear ............. you can sign in for a £10 per month saving if you shop around, but your bills appear to be 100% less, as do alot of others, could it be the ones who are paying more aren't using their gas and electric wisely?

You could give them some tips.

Ropey Hoff I'm glad you've posted on here as I was about to cancel my flight thinking we wont be able to afford to even have cereal for dinner!!! :) Oh well could probably lose a few pounds anyways!!!!!!!

cheers for that

your right of course, some doom mongerers would have you believe that everyones living on the bread line or in poverty in Australia and others try to prove their point using the current exchange rate, which initially makes it look like things are far cheaper in the uk, but they fail to mention, on purpose because it doesn't suit their bias claims, that the same exchange rate means that average wages are then 35% more in OZ, they also ignore the FACT that wage rises are practically none exhistant here in the uk and inflation is running at almost 5% and they don't like it when i point out that average pay rises in Australia have been approximately 4.7% year on year, no facts are no good when it comes to cost parity in each country, but me ........... i'm a stickler for facts, it stops all the scaremongering stories.

A question is Mackay as expensive as Cairns for eating out, there is no where up here where I could order 5 seafood meals for $69 unless it's the chippy.

I know Kev mentioned steak pie and mash for $3, we would pay over $20 for it here apart from the Casino where it's $10.

I know when we were moving up here we wasn't sure whether to get our sofa in Melbourne or in Cairns, if you look at the Harvey Norman site and key in different postcodes the price can vary tremendously. I suppose that's what we get for living rural, but I tell you something I would pay double the price to stay here as I love it and would never go back to Melbourne (unless I had to for medical reasons) or the UK.

We don't eat out in Mackay as it is a 100 km round trip.

Locally, we have the Seaforth Bowls Club, weekend only for meals, $12 to $21

Haliday Bay Resort used to have an all you can eat smorgasbord for $6.50 until a group of 6 "tourists" abused the system(ie) one bloke going in 6 times...The boss was watching and asked them to pay the proper amount; they refused so he stopped the smorgasbord there and then and asked the crowd to 'thank the 6 plonkers' for the priviledge.

We now have to pay between $15 and $25 for a single meal.

Cheers, Bobj.

Have to agree, I could not save any money in Oz after everything went out, but can put a little away back home.

I love the way some people are giving their opinions of oz after only going on holiday there without actually living working and paying the bills in Oz.

I live in oz and I can tell ya straight up.........there is a reason why everyone is going out of their way to shop at 20 different shops for groceries, there is a reason why we buy what we can in bulk, there is a reason why we shop overseas so much, there is a reason why we avail of free days out, there is a reason why secondhand shops do a roaring trade and there is a reason why personal debt in this country is sky high!!

If you are fortunate enough to have a job in a well paid profession then things are pretty good, but unfortunatly a hugh percentage of aussies earn an average wageor less and the cost of living is no longer average. Most families I know would be in deep trouble if their hours were cut even a small bit and would be in major trouble if it were not for the generous family tax benefit allowances they get each fortnight.Housing and utilities have gone up a lot in the past few years and people are now feeling the sqeeze with groceries too.......basic goods are becoming luxuries.

This of course does not mean that everyone is struggling or will struggle here, but lets at least call a spade a spade....it is expensive here now.Lets leave the 'Lucky Country-Life is Great-Living the Aussie Dream' hard sell to the politicians and Tourism Australia.

True, but I live in Australia and this thread is a comment on Australia so I have commented on Australia.I have often said Ireland is a rip-off in many ways too,but this thread is not the place for further comment on that.

businesses will charge whatever they can get away with,it is only when they strike consumer resistance that they will adjust accordingly. if an economy is in the doldrums business has to address their pricing structure or go broke. i see signs of consumer resistance beginning as in pre christmas sales which was never the case. aus still has low unemployment and personal debt is covered in over a trillion dollars in savings and superanuation

I think ropey is getting confused by thinking this is an oz vs uk thread whereas it's actually a discussion based on the article posted in the op. the premise behind the article as I see it, is that retailers and service providers are charging prices which are way out of line with the actual value of many goods, products and services.

Some of these problems can be overcome by shopping around, others by shopping online from overseas websites. Some we just have to live with.

Earlier on in this thread I posted about a price comparison between a supermarket and a greengrocers right next to it. You'd think, in a normal retail environment, that the supermarket would try and beat the other guy by using its buying power to sell stuff more cheaply. But no, it has for the last 3 years or so that I've been here, consistently charged up to 4 times more than the other guy for fruit and veg.....WHY?
