Can we get keep our daughter back a school year?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

Can anyone answer our query??......We have a daughter in year 11 (she will be 16 in Feb 2012), it seems very likely that we will be moving to Sydney March/April 2012. Can we arrange for her to stay back a year when she gets to Australia? We know the school year starts in Jan/Feb and that she should be starting year 11, but if we don't get to Oz until April would it be wise to keep her back a year? How difficult is it to arrange this?

All comments greatly appreciated, thank you.

It is VERY common for kids to be a year back from where their age says they should be in school, so it should not be a problem at all and I think you are very wise to do it this way. It will help her to settle into the Aussie schooling system, without the immediate pressure of year 11 and 12.

Love

Given that putting her into year 11 part way through means that she will have missed some possibly important parts of a two year course then yes you can ask to have her put into year 10 when you arrive. It means that she will be quite a bit older than her cohort as the cut off for NSW is 31 July and you wouldnt get too many Feb birthdays in the next cohort down. You may get a bit of resistance but they should be able to accommodate her.
