George,

Myself & my partner are in the process of gathering all the information for applying for WA SS and Visa 176. It will be January 2012 before our application gets sent off as he has to go through the TRA and IELTS in the coming weeks. Will this new EOI system be in affect by then or is it still not fully in place?

Thanks for your help.

We haven't submitted the skills assessment paper assessment yet, how likely would it be to get the paper assessment passed, the practical assessment passed and the visa lodged all in 6 months!!!

Hi Alanlisa,

Who are your skills assessment people? TRA / VETASSESS? VETASSESS took 6 months for ours and we now have to do it all over again! It looks unlikely that we will get in before July 1st and then we prob won't get it at all..... it begs the question should we spend all the money doing VETASSESS and SS, if it's unlikely we'll get an invite... but don't want to die wondering either! :0(((

Our's will be through vetassess, can I ask why u need to do urs again? Hopefully we will get an invite bcoz sparks r in really high demand in wa, or at least I'm hoping they are!!

Had a negative as agent advised to do something that we didn't want to, and as it happens we were right and they gave us a negative... so another 6 months! Yeh hopefully you'll get an invite after Jul, although i have heard that sometimes the occupations which are highly required can be harder as there's so many applicants.... and I think it then comes down to who has what points, experience, qual's etc.... I guess everyone's in competition with each other, but its like that here as well these days!!! x x

I'm just writing the portfolio at the minute which I'm finding quite complex but I've had some good advice on how best to complete it. What trade r u going over for? It is all getting so difficult now but if we don't do it now we never will.

We;re going over on Marketing Specialist. We have an agent which does all the paperwork although I am contemplating dropping them this week to do ourselves.... i have the vetassess form they filled in last time so am just going to copy that... have to get all the paperwork out again and get coloured scanned copies certified but thats do-able I guess, just takes time. But i think if i cancel the agent, its hard work with kids, work, etc to get everything done fast, where as the agent pushes you.... same here, now or never x

We're going it alone, for cash reasons really bcoz it all so blooming expensive! Ours isn't as simple as filling in a form, we've got to write a massive bio then complete a practical assessment. I think its all a money making scheme for them!

We paid 2040 and couldn't tell you what for at this point!! I guess its more for their experience and speed more than anything... my mate is sparky and he moved to Surfers on Monday 7th Nov, been there a week got house, schools done and loving it! Took him 3 years tho cos had to get all his skills and qualifications certified.... worth it tho cos I think they pay you more if you have them x

This thread is brilliant, thanks George.

I will be applying under the new EOI system as there is no way I will get my skills assessment completed before July but I've got a few things I want to clarify, can anyone help?

1. Firstly, is the idea of the new system that visa processing times will be quicker? So if I get invited to apply (being optimistic here!), is it likely to be weeks rather than months for a 175 to be processed?

2. What happens if there is more than one profession that you qualify for on schedule 1? I will probably apply as a Retail Pharmacist but could also work as a Hospital Pharmacist, and the skills assessment is the same. I assume there is no way that these could be combined. If I express interest in 175 and 176 categories and a state has hospital pharmacist on their SMP (but not retail pharmacist) does this mean there is no chance of my EOI being considered for ss from that state?

Thanks in advance!

Hi George

I am just at the skills assessment stage as a General Accountant, with a view to applying for a 175.

I agree that it may be wise for me to apply for a state sponsor 176.

Is it possible for me to apply for both at the same time to cover my options given that the 176 will be granted earlier

Hi george, im hoping you can offer me some advice. I am a nurse/ midwife and am looking at migrating on a 457 to perth in 2013. Ive just looked at the link you gave and it says that for the 457 visa the EOI is optional, but i dont unferstand what this means? Will i still be anle to apply directly to the hospitals in perth or not? Thanks sarah

So many questions:

@Racheyroo -

1. The new system is about dealing with DIAC's backlog and avoiding a new backlog. It has nothing to do with being quick, but you can always hope.

2. The occupation you choose should be the one you can get state sponsorship in ideally, as well as being on Schedule 1 and consonant ("closely related") to your recent work experience.

@Cables - yes I'm a bit mystified by your occupation - which states are currently sponsoring it and what is the source of your optimism? Schedule 2 is going to be a nightmare for many, and in the case of marketing I can't see that sneaking into Schedule 1 any time soon.

@Amanda - no there's no limit to the number of applications you can lodge but if you're at the skills assessment stage now I don't think you should worry about being taken off the skilled list any time before July next year, ie you can make a strategic decision before there's any need to choose.

@Sarah - you should just get your prospective employer to sponsor you. For general skilled migration applicants I think they might be planning to divert them to the 457 stream, but in your case that won't arise. Nurses and midwifes are a protected species when it comes to migration.

@Saved by the Son - your message makes no sense but I would suggest that as you're in Sydney you should be seeing an agent.

@Claire - for the foreseeable future there will be occupations which Skills Australia say that we need - Schedule 1 - and those which have been kept for historical or local reasons - Schedule 2.

Cheers,

Hi George - and thanks for your answers! :wubclub:

I have a brief question regarding the above quotation - Is it possible that visa's 175's and 176's (the way we know them today) will be a thing of the past unless you're in either a licensed profession, (i.e. healthcare-related or engineering) field? In other words, will everyone kind of be pushed to go "457"?

That's the impression I get overall (where employers will also have access to the EOI database).

Thanks for your time :)

Sol this is going too far into the future. I would imagine that the EOI database is intended to identify people with suitable skills and bring them into the 457 stream if they can't be accommodated within the general skilled migration scheme. Employers have shown from the creaky old skills matching machinery that they won't be shoehorned into accepting employees without a proper interview/selection process so unless DIAC comes up with some facilitative mechanisms and incentives, it's not going to be a major aspect of future Australian skilled migrant selection.

George, we appreciate your recommendations but may I please make a polite request that you stop belittling other people's professions. I see you're a highly qualified person in law, and that's great, but someone that works in marketing is just as worthwhile as a person as you are.

You also were very condescending to accountants - I'm a chartered accountant (assessed as an accountant) and I don't think that what you said earlier about how the accounting profession is going to be "rationalised" by improvements in the IT environment makes much sense. It shows a lack of understanding of what accountants actually do.

Once again we appreciate your input, but you are coming accross as incredibly condescending towards our professions/work.

Hi Dono,

Having worked in this profession for far too long I admit that I'm probably desensitised to many of the usual professional courtesies - there would be few migration agents who wouldn't be - however in the case of both marketing professionals and accountants I was merely reflecting on the nature of the lists which have been established by DIAC as the skilled migration gatekeepers.

Historically there is a perception that DIAC has brought in too many hairdressers, cooks, and marketing specialists inter alia, you can see a public comment to that effect by the Minister last year, and to that extent I'm advising caution to those wishing to migrate as marketing specialists, no professional slight intended.

With respect to accountants, the gross number of accountants required in Australia could arguably be overstated and the fact that Skills Australia has specified the occupation as one which will be reviewed, again I only intended to promote caution, not criticism.

If anyone wishes to advocate for their occupation to be included on the SOL, you have the opportunity to make submissions for next year through http://www.skillsaustralia.gov.au/SOL2012.shtml .

Hope that clarifies the position.

Cheers,

George Lombard

On another topic, DIAC has finally announced that they will be processing priority 5 applications, see http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/gsm-priority5-processing.htm . Most likely the volume of applications won't satisfy everyone but hopefully it will diminish the waiting for those who have been in the queue for the longest time.

This is the relevant text from the link above:

Commencement of processing of Priority Group 5 applications

Based on the number of applications on hand and anticipated application rates for Priority Groups 1 and 3, the department expects to commence allocating some Priority Group 5 applications this program year.

There are currently approximately 27 347 applications lodged from in Australia and 15 284 applications lodged from outside Australia Priority Group 5 cases awaiting allocation.

How processing will occur

Processing of Priority Group 5 applications lodged in Australia will begin with the remaining applications in the visa subclasses in effect prior to September 2007, the oldest of which was lodged on 28 July 2005. There are approximately 756 cases in this group.

Processing of Priority Group 5 applications lodged outside Australia will begin with applications in visa subclasses 495 and 496, which were lodged prior to 1 September 2007, the oldest of which was lodged on 10 July 2006. Unlike other GSM visa applications lodged from outside Australia, prior to 1 September 2007, these applications were not effected by the Minister's Cap and Cease arrangements. There are approximately 594 cases in this group.

The number of Priority Group 5 applications processed this program year will ultimately depend on the number of higher priority applications received, and other factors including any change in the size of the Migration Program or variation of the Processing Direction. Many Priority Group 5 applicants still face a considerable wait until their application is allocated to a case officer for processing and may want to consider other options available.

Cheers,
