Ozmaniac
Note that the 6 years only applies to sponsorship by an 'Accredited' employer so it won't apply to the vast majority of 457s. http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/whats-new-esw.htm Sponsorship accreditation
RockDr
highly amused that the article got their headline wrong. 457s are four years, not three, so it's not doubling the length at all... Not to mention that you can already apply for another 457 once the first expires, and most people wanting to stay longer would be applying for PR after three years anyway. Raul Senise
Just noticed this whilst browsing the paper and thought it may interest some of you: http://news.brisbanetimes.com.au/breaking-news-national/skilled-workers-to-double-their-stay-20111102-1mvrs.html The article has misreported the facts. It is referring to a new initiative for certain high volume 457 sponsors to become “accredited”. If accredited the validity of the status as an “approved sponsor” would be for 6 years rather than the current 3 years. It has nothing at all to do with the maximum validity period of the 457 visa which currently is 4 years.
RockDr
that makes far more sense...
