Wot living costs, quality of life and are there as much to do inland as there is on the coast? Nice to hear from people living inland maybe near or in towns like moranbah. All information and your views welcome. G'day mate, for people coming from any UK cities, it would be a great "culture shock". Having virtually everything at, or near your fingertips to having to use your initiative to get by is a fair challenge. However, you can have a good life in the smaller towns if you have an outgoing personality and the attitude to enjoy the outdoors. Most of the smaller towns have the usual necessary shops and town facilities, but only in basic form. The real trick to living in the small towns is to have a hobby/pursuit that is compatible with what the town and surrounding area offers. Thats one of the main reasons for emigrating the outdoor life and to bring my boy up in a better environment. Im still waiting to get for coates hire to get back to us on where they want us to go. Thats why i started this thread to get peoples views. Im into my fishing so to be able to go fishing and to learn a whole new way. Do you have to travel far for most things if you live in land? Depends on what you want really for travelling...In Qld a 2-3 hour drive is considered commonplace for a fishing trip.:yes: I note you mentioned Moranbah, any other options Coates have given you? I always liked going to Aussie country towns and in some ways it feels more like the 'real' Australia. Just keep an open mind and make an effort to join in the local community. I got talking to a young Pommie bloke in St George and I quite envied him for becoming part of the town life - he'd married a local girl. There are definite pros and cons about living inland, This is what I found about Goondiwindi (Pop 10,000) Pro's Become part of community Crime rates can be very low Slower pace of life Local shops = local produce Decent shops but little choice. Plenty of local groups who will make you welcome (Fishing, art, craft and stuff like that) Good fishing in River Cons Lack of selection with shops Nearest large town was a two hour drive Local hospital small with few facilities Two to four hour drive for specialist hospital appointments School selection is very limited, some parents send kids to boarding school Shops close midday Saturday and reopen Monday Gets cut of for several days during floods. However i did enjoy my time at Goondiwindi. Now living at Burrum Heads near Hervey Bay with a population of around 800 and on the coast. 20 min drive to major shopping centers and hospitals. So you can also live in a village on the coast with the advantages of a large town a short drive away. Been looking at different places to try get the feel and as much imfo all different types of living. Completing my house sale on the on 19th of this month. Got a rental so moving in to that while were got pickfords coming round to pack our stuff ready. Just so frustrating on waiting at the mo. Been reading some of the threads on fishing so cant wait to start fishing out there. But think i mite have to find a fellow fisherman to show us how its done and the low down on the fish. A bloke can knuckle down and get on with the job, whereas the good lady has to look after house, home and family. A few of the wives manage quite well, but for a lady new to an area, it can be fairly daunting. Mate, been all through that in some of the most isolated places in Australia and in the days before the supermarkets etc. so I do understand far more than most scribes on this fine forum.:yes: Cheers, Bobj. Most Qld fishos use 6' to 7' rods with a 17-25lb rating with either overhead reels or spinning reels. Depending on what you are targetting, 15-20 lb braid is the norm in most of the dams in the southern half of the state and 20-50 lb braid in the northern dams and rivers. Ok, as a wife with a 3 year old who has moved to a small town I will confess it is not easy BUT not impossible either. It depends on the first instance whether your wife plans to work, I have found childcare to be quite a struggle to get and have settled on 2 separate providers. There are a number of mother and toddler type things that I took Izzy too and met a few people. The best way I found was through the local rugby club. Husband plays and it's a real social event, so I quickly met other wives / partners and their kids. As for Izzy, there's quite a lot here. 3 options for pre-school for next year, swimming, dancing etc all start at 3. Once she get bigger there is a huge selection of sports for her to try and this isn't a big town, 8-10k s(fluctuates with seasonal harvest workers) We've been here since June and I feel very settled now, have friends and the start of a social circle. Got a good hairdresser / beautician etc. 5 hours to the nearest coast and I'm no longer daunted by the distance, we've made a weekend trip. All the best wherever you end up. Have been looking at the golf courses about and they look superb. I used ti play football but had an ligament injury to my knee and ops so cant play contact sport ne more so turned to golf. My wife wont be working to start off with but she is a beauty therapist but trade so will be looking. she goes mobile here at the mo but know how it would be to do that over here. Glad to hear ur getting on so well out there. feel like im out there in my head but feel our lifes on hold while were still if you wot i mean. My husband has recently started work monday to Friday in Narrabri. He is hopeful that we will all move to Narrabri in the near future. My concerns are, will it be isolated, my daughter loves dance and son likes karate. My son has mild autism, so I'm also keen to find out more about the local schools.
