Teaching Assistant Qualification in Australia

Hi everyone,

Is there any national/standardized qualification in Australia to be a teaching assistant? I am from Indonesia and I was recently granted a one year Work and Holiday visa in Australia. I possess a Diploma in Child Psychology and Learning Disorder Management issued by Singaporean college. If my aim is to work as teaching support in special school, do I still have to be registered first to work in school setting?

Thanks a lot.

Hi and welcome to the forum, firstly you could do with trying to convert your qualifications in to Australian ones. Another option is to apply for the Cert III in childrens services but then see if you can do the RPL (recognition of Prior Learning) this is where they will test you on your current and previous knowledge and if you do well then you will received the qualification without having to do any studying towards it.

You will find that most schools will ask for:

Cert 3 in Children’s Services, First Aid, WWCC (working with children check) and Current Police Check

All depends on where you go, they often dont need even the cert iii although that is another string to your bow. Usually just a first aid certificate and a clean police record. Teacher aide jobs are hard to come by as they are often filled by local mums who want to work school hours and dont mind not having a permanent job - it is very rare these days to get a permanent teacher aide position as so many of them are tied to individual kids and when their needs change or their location changes then the aide doesnt continue with them.

Unless you are a teacher, pretty much all you will be doing is pushing wheelchairs, changing nappies, reading the odd book, doing copious amounts of photocopying etc

Hi, thanks a lot for the information! I am now checking about RPL and whether I am eligible to apply to get the Cert III in Children Service to work in child care setting. Thanks again :):)
